I think it's more prevalent with the 5D and the way it renders the red channel. I've never had a problem with it, however.

Excellent processing and central detail, but it gives away the fact you've combined undriven shots, which is what makes the corner stars fail to overlay accurately, as they move through the projection of the lens in successive frames. Well done in any case - an excellent shot.
There are two ways of overcoming the problem of registration shown here - either shooting with a fisheye lens, or use a driven mount so that the stars are in the same spot on each frame.

5d2 with 17-40 @ 17mm on tripod and pointed pretty much straight up :)
Plus, ISO 1600 and 20 x 30 second shots + 5 'dark frames' (with the lens cap on) that the software uses to do noise reduction. Combined all frames in DeepSkyStacker (DSS) (http://deepskystacker.free.fr/) (free software that I reckon is GREAT).

Don't get the opportunity to use this lens much. Bought it for some unique angles for weddings and events but I seem to be favoring my 35L and 70-200L more than this lens. But it is sharp. The pic below was not sharpened. Just a reduction in color cast and some adjustment in levels.

Well, after a lot of tossing back n forth between the 17-40 and the Tamron 17-50, I pulled the trigger on the "L" glass today. I'll admit I was gonna go with the Tammy at first because I thought it was just as sharp if not sharper in some cases as the Canon. A local photog talked me into the Canon. The build quality is excellent and the USM is quiet as a church mouse. I picked it up today after work and got out this evening and took a few shots. So far I love it!

I didn't really do any post processing, so it looks a bit rough, but neat how the 17-40 was still able to get close up. I zoomed to 100% and could see the details in the mantis' face.

17-40 is a great lens for me. It's even more fun on FF. It can get quite creative if you can deal with the distortion on the wide end. I like putting the 17-40 on and just playing around with it and seeing what it can do.

Thanks mate. I wasn't going to do any shooting that afternoon, luckily I changed my mind at the last minute & got the resulting images. The colours are spectacular as you say & have an almost firestorm effect. I usually shoot in RAW, with cloudy WB for sunrise & sunsets, but following some advice from a photographer on U-tube, shot in JPEG & daylight white balance. The images would have looked superb, if I'd had a Lee soft neutral grad on the lens. I've got that one on my Christmas wish list. How do you find the 50D? I have a 40D, but would like to upgrade to full frame someday.

I like the original orientation much better. While the horizon is always level, one often cannot see the horizon due to closer details such as trees, hills and mountains. I think many folks obsess about having a 'straight' horizon, making the shots inaccurate. In this case, the verticals in the fence are more telling then the hills in the background. Just my opinion. Great shot.

and yeah...the roses were real. they were dyed of course, but real. had to order them from a florist in Miami and get them delivered in VA. I got brownie points
Phillip....sometimes what you see on your cameras view screen isn't an accurate interpretation of what you've actually captured....so don't delete your images until you have a good look at them on your computer monitor,as you may be throwing away some perfectly good images.....As to the dyed blue roses....We have a saying here in Australia...."Only In America"

Indeed +1 on that point. Raw processing is powerful indeed, you will be amazed how far you can reign in what was thought a ruined shot, easier for over exposed than under exposed mind.

I love the dramatic looking sky & sharpness of this image, even in black & white it looks fantastic. I also had a peek at some of your images in Flickr, very impressive. You have a good assortment of equipment too. The Lee filters do an awesome job. That's what I will eventually add to my bag of tricks. From what I've seen on the net, they seem to be the cream of the crop.

Many thanks for you kind words. Equipment is like knowledge in this hobby, there is a steep curve in acquiring them! I bought my 20d nearly 4 years ago now, but only recently started taking things seriously i.e. filters and support etc. My trip to NYC was probably the last time i shot without filters.
With regard to Lee products, they are certainly great performers, not the best but certainly very good. Regardless of what filter manufacturer you choose to buy from, make sure you buy the Lee holder, you will be pretty much set for future purchases and the like.
If you have any questions on filters feel free to ask here or via PM. Also there is a great deal of information in filters in this thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=224448

The first digital camera I bought was a second hand Canon 300D. It was all right to start off with, but as the newer models came out with better resolution, I decided to invest in the 40D. Then came the 17-40L followed by the 70-200F4L I.S. After that, it was time to invest in a good computer, so I followed a good mates advice & bought a 24 inch IMac. My next purchase will definitely be the Lee holder & neutral grad filters. Does it ever end? Anyhow life is short, so I may as well enjoy myself before I kark it, & what better way to enjoy life, than travelling about the countryside taking photos of this beautiful world we live in.
Thanks for the advice on the filters too, I much appreciate your help.

I did the usual post-processing things, such as removing dust spots, levelling horizons, shadow & highlight tool etc. There's been lots of bush fires in our region over the past week, so that's why the colours look so different to normal. We've just come out of very dry winter, a drought in fact & that's why the grass looks yellowish & dead. If you've ever been to Australia, you should know how different the colours of each sunset can be. As quoted previously; "Beautiful one day, Perfect the next" If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for backing me up fellow Aussie. As you & I know, seeing we live here in this beautiful country, the colours of our landscapes vary from season to season & indeed from day to day. I guess it must come as quite a shock, for people from countries like Britain, who are used to plenty of rainfall & lush green pastures all year round. They should jump on a Jumbo & come on down to see it for themselves.

I do know you're right. We had a family wedding in NZ last Christmas and a few people came from Aus and backed up the drought & wildfire stories we'd all been reading. Let's hope it's just a passing phase and you do get back to normal.
As to "plenty of rainfall & lush green pastures" I had my fill of that in the far north-west of Scotland a few weeks ago. There was no day when it didn't rain heavily and a few when that was all it did. But the occasional bright period when the sky opened up and there was blue sky & brilliant sunshine made it all worth while. Sadly I'd had to leave my camera bag at home and just had my trusty G10. Even that didn't see the light of day very often because the weather was so grim!
Typical Brit - complaining that it's too wet when you're contending with drought and bush fires!

Mate, even with all the droughts & bush fires,I wouldn't wish to live in any other country on earth, other than this fair land called Australia. We desperately need rain though, particularly here where I live, as we don't have town water & have to rely on water storage-tanks for our supply.
I would love to travel one day, to see the rest of the planet, particularly America & Great Britain.

I like the church shot, but did you use a graduated filer (actual or in post processing)? There's a weird darkening on the top half that I find distracting. Hope you don't mind, but I did a quick and dirty to even things out -

I used a graduated filter adjustment (and it wasn't lined up/matched perfectly, but you get the idea) in an attempt to even out the brightness of the building and used saturation and luminance sliders on the blues to darken the skies.

it was post-processing where half the church became darker (an attempt at HDR). I don't have any of those fancy filters yet, other than a UV filter :-)
this was the picture before I started really messing with it...

I was trying to get the skies a deeper blue, but in the process gave me the result of the previous church picture. I'm still in the early learning process of Photoshop lol.
I just took the darkened half as a cloud shadow casting over part of the church
by the way, I don't mind. I'm here to learn :-)

^^^ it takes a lot of playin' around, and the learning never ends!
What software are you using? Both LightRoom and Photoshop have selective color features, where you can isolate a certain color group without changing the color cast across the entire frame. For instance, if you were to bump the blue saturation overall, sure, it would make the clouds deeper blue, but it would also change the color cast of the building - the white-ish facade is just about equal parts red, blue, and green and making the blue more dominant would give it an unmistakable blue tint. With the selective color, increasing saturation in the blues would only effect the parts that are dominantly blue to begin with, leaving everything alone - well, ideally, but you always have to keep an eye out for rouge effects.

mainly photoshop. I also have the Photomatix HDR program. What's the selective color features in Photoshop under?
Thanks for the tips :-)

In CS4, on the right side where the adjustment layers box is, it's the last icon on the lower right. Once you select it, you have to select the color group you're targeting from a pull-down menu. I'm not sure where it is in previous versions (I had CS2, but I can't remember exactly where it is) If you're not using CS4, I'm sure that you could find it pretty easily with a google search of "selective color" and your PS version.

Edwin. I will be up your way tomorrow. Any hints/suggestions on photogenic locations to visit? :) I will be staying at Pomona.
If I were you, I'd be up before dawn, to catch the sunrise at Noosa National Park. There's heaps of lovely beaches & rock formations along the park walk & should make for some interesting shots. Mary Cairncross Park, near Maleny is another good location for photo opportunities. Good hunting & don't forget to let us all see the results here on POTN.
