I did process the cannon in color as well Edwin. Although there's some haloing, especially against the dull, uneventful sky.

If you have CS4 or similar, you could attack that issue a dozen different ways.
I might use the "replace color" tool first as it allows you, with an eye dropper tool to pick out the purple color and then change the hue or saturation of that color. Or, I might try masking it out first and then changing the color.
PS Elements 6 and newer also has the same or similar tools.
For fun, you could even replace the sky!
Cheers!

Nice shot Ole! What did use for lighting?
I used a 550EX at 1/4, shot into a silver umbrella, about at the same height as the model's waist. Triggered by Elinchrom skyports. I wanted it higher, but my lightstand would've broke because of the strong winds catching sail in the umbrella. The only reason I got this shot was because I managed to anchor the lightstand into some well-placed cracks in the ground. Had to give up after 10 frames though, it was definately not comfortable to shoot in fierce wind, heavy rain with the air temperature almost at the freezing point. Much less for the model with her thin dress.

9th of October 2009 (Fri), 13:33
awesome sunrise pics on your flickr Ole! were those HDRs or just awesome lighting and post-processing?
I only have a 430 EXII, but was debating between getting an umbrella to use with my 430 EXII or get a basic strobe or continuous lighting kit to start out with.
olelovold
9th of October 2009 (Fri), 14:13
Thanks a lot Phillip! Those posted are HDRs. I can get nearly similiar results with processing using digital grads in Lightroom, but I prefer the HDR rendering actually.
I recommend buying an umbrella, a stand, and a trigger for your 430EX. Umbrellas work great for softening and spreading the light (though you better be careful when there's wind present (http://www.flickr.com/photos/olelovold/3733832886/)), and a radio-based trigger allows great versatility when you face tricky conditions. If basic strobe means you'll be dependant on being plugged into a wall, I myself wouldn't recommend it at all - it's so limiting, atleast for my uses.
PLLphotography
9th of October 2009 (Fri), 14:21
that is true...didn't think of the fact that with the flash and umbrella, I can take it everywhere. I've seen some posts where they recommend starting out with a simple flash/umbrella and reflector and looks like they get some great results....plus its inexpensive.
Thanks for the advice
btw, I read your posts on your shots for that pic. That's gotta suck with the quick changes in weather, but luckily none of your stuff was damaged. It was like that when I was in Puerto Rico at the rain forest, although I had trash bags handy lol

Yeah, and in addition to being portable, its also really lightweight and simple to set up. I'm glad to be able to give some advice :)
Yeah, the weather change really pissed me off. I came to the location, everything was perfect, and then, after shooting 10 frames, it's suddenly impossible to shoot. All of my gear got really soaked, and my umbrella and stand were at the breach point, but everything came back home undamaged, luckily. Also, if you see to the left of the frame, you can see some drops in the air - thats the drops from the waves crashing into the shore only 2m away from the model. Right after we walked away from the location, I saw a huge wave seriously soaking the spot where she had been standing. Scary stuff!

how did you manage to get a 30 second exposure? ND filter?

Yes, the winds were dead calm and I used a B+W 6 stop ND filter. I went on a duller day which helped to get the extended exposure time.

The sky in that second one is amazing, all the more so because it's B&W. The first in colour is strange - I'd love to know what you've done with it (other than around the edges).

There are a fair few layers to it, it was pretty clean up until the point i ran it through a polaroid transfer plugin, it then boosted saturation, warmth, a form of blur, and the torn edges.
The second one is the serious one, its going in for a local club competition this week.

While the predominately 5D pics on this thread are just stunning, this lens works for me on my 50D as I do a lot of car photography and don't like the distortion of a 'true' 17mm lens. I not clued up and have just purchased this lens, but I'm guessing on a crop the 17mm must be the equiv of around 25mm or so? On my 50D the image quality is insane, I'm loving it. (Mind you, having upgraded froma D60 and a cheapo kit lens it's bound to be a mind blowing improvement)

1. I should have shot this from further back at 35mm and avoid the distortion. The tower actually leans quite a bit and the lens makes it appear as if the lean is caused by the distortion.

Anthony, I think that looks about what it actually is in real life. On my next visit, I'll make sure to use a FL with no distortion to get an accurate pic. Of course, I could PP, but I some how can never manage to figure out whether I've applied enough or not...

^Many thanks.
My photos are all HDR. My goal with HDR is to leave the impression of something "extra" in the photo but without imparting a psychedelic/nuclear blast look characteristic of some HDRs. (If people prefer that, great. It's just not for me.) To that end, when tonemapping Photomatix, I keep the "strength" setting between 20-40 and "saturation" around 70-80. I also use the "gamma" setting to add/reduce contrast. Then, it's onto PS, where, if needed, I'll adjust color and contrast. For example, when using Raw Importer, if you reduce the luminosity of the blue channel, you can achieve punchier blue skies. As for contrast, I just use the Brightness/Contrast tool for that. That's the basic gist of my process.
Screenshot of the Raw Importer luminance tab:

Nope, they're jpegs. Why do you ask?
Oh... one more thing I forgot to mention: A lot of my shots have perspective correction applied to them to straighten verticals/eliminate wide-angle distortion. I think it adds a professional touch. In some instances, wide angle distortion can be dramatic and artistic and work very well. Other shots, however, can definitely benefit from it.
Two methods of p/c in PS:
Edit -> Transform -> Perspective
or
Crop tool (my preferred method)

Hydrogen, thanks for sharing your Photomatix settings. Whenever I try HDR in RAW the colours are always messed up in Photomatix. Not too sure why that's the case (I have the latest Photomatix).
Can't remember if I posted these already or not.

Who says 17-40 is horrible in low light? You just need to learn how to use this thing called the flash. Besides at super low light F2.8 won't be enough anyway.
First 2 pictures the "proper" exposure without flash was around ISO1600 F4 @ 4 seconds.
