Nope. That's my almost 60 year old mom :-)
My parents own a clothing store. He's a 30 year retired Army Colonel, and she's ran this business for the last 25 years. I took this pic at their store and just wanted to hide the unsightly boxes and posters.

Hey CKort, I just looked at your gearlist in your signature. How do you like the Lightsphere II? I just ordered one myself. I ordered the translucent cloud one (I think).
I have a stofen omni bounce but haven't been that impressed with it.

It's great at diffusing the light. But if you're moving around and shootin, it will likely want to fall off. It's a bit top heavy and clumsy but it does what it is suppose to do. I just got the omni bounce and so far I like it.
Here's a shot with the GF Lightsphere

I know what you mean. I'm not sure if it's my cheapo Epson printer, or my computer that has a monitor that isn't calibrated, but my pics seem more vibrant on my screen, and when I print them out at home as opposed to when I get them printed at the local photo processing place.
Of course I want photo quality far beyond that of my printer, so when I get them printed, I'm a bit disappointed to see the colors dulled down a bit....but the resolution of the prints are a lot better than what mine spits out :-(

I count myself as being very blessed, living in such a beautiful country. We Queenslander's grizzle about the winter months & how cold it gets, but you have it heaps worse than us,with the tornado's, snow etc. Why don't you do what your Geese do & fly south to Australia for the winter? Great series Jordan!
I've been thinking of picking up this lens for landscapes. Anyone use it for a walkaround lens on full frame (5D in my case), such as family/pet pics inside? I have a Tamron 28-75 that's pretty nice, but thinking the color/contrast is better with the 17-40. However, I hate to spend the $$$ on the 17-40 for such a specialized purpose (I'm just a hobbyist on a budget). It would be paired with a 70-200 f/4.

Thanks. The 17-40 isn't really a 'walkaround' length on full frame, and I don't know how much use you'd get from an ultra-wide zoom like the 17-40 for pet and family photos.

Ya, that's my thinking too, unfortunately. I had a 17-40 a couple of years ago with a 40D and I liked it alot. I'm currently switching my photography interests away from birds/wildlife (although I will still do it those a little) to landscape/cityscape and was thinking the combo of 17-40 / 70-200 might make a decent setup. I could just add a 50 1.4 or 85 1.8 to the mix for indoor family stuff. But, I'd want the 17-40 to do more than just sit in the bag 90% of the time for the money it costs, which is why I was wondering about how well it may serve for those type of family pics.

I am looking for a lens that will live on my Canon 450d as a permanent fixture. I have about £700 to spend and like the 17-80mm range of photography. I am at present looking at the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM which from what i have seen looks awesome! I think i need the IS and f2.8 as my hand held shots can be a little shaky so fast shutter speed is important. I am also looking at the Canon 24-105mm f4L IS and the 17-40mm f4L.
The thing that concerns me is the f4 and no IS on the 17-40L. Is this really a lens to use with a tripod? I do use a tripod for flowers and scenery but i also want a lens that i can take on days out with the family so all those shots will be hand held.
I love the results of this lens and it's affordable. I could also get a prime for the 50mm range and i'll be pretty well sorted i think.
Any help appreciated.

I would always buy the 17-55. Best standard zoomlens on the 1.6 cropcameras imo.

Halloween treat for me! My wife played dress up yesterday, so I snapped a shot and swapped out the background with a full moon. probably looks a bit fake, but I'm still trying to learn how to remove/replace backgrounds and make them look natural
taken with 40D and 17-40 lens with flash.

40D may be outdated by those who want the latest and greatest, but I still know a couple people still using 20D's that take fantastic shots. I'm sure those in the photography profession benefit from getting the best, but for someone like me that does it merely for the fun of it, my 40D serves me just fine :-)

I know what you mean when you say photography can be very trying at times.
We're all still learning, even the pro's. Just recently I learnt how to clean the censor in my 40D. Previously I'd had it professionally done at a cost of $70. One of my "expert" mates offered to clean it for me, so I let him, to save a few dollars, but it turned out worse than when he started. So I was forced to take matters into my own hands & clean it myself. Guess what, it's not difficult to do at all & I saved myself $70 into the bargain. We're never too old to learn something new, we've just got to be willing to give it a go, as you yourself have done with your recently published image. Hang in there old son.
Cheers......Edwin.

Oh, it's not so bad - it'll make me put a bad day behind me pretty quickly. :D Nothing like the above, but a small BMW's worth of gear, I guess. I've been telling myself that I'm going to shift some things out of the way and take a nice photo sometime, but it hasn't happened yet - I think that just the idea of balancing the flash with the ambient from the windows has been getting in the way.
