Nice image Philip. We finally got the rain we were praying for. We've had afternoon storms, with buckets of the wet stuff for the past few days & both my water tanks are full to the brim again.
glad to hear Edwin. I'm sure you were outside dancing in the rain...just hopefully not with your 40D around your neck :-)

Thanks Philip. It sure was great to see the rain again. I wasn't game to go dancing in the rain mate, as there was heaps of thunder & lightning about. One clap of thunder went off right beside my house & both me & my dog nearly had a heart attack. Mate you & your family have a really Fantastic Christmas & God Blessed New Year. The same goes for all my new found friends here on POTN.

Anyone for a juicy Hereford t-bone thrown on a hot barbecue plate. It's summer here in Australia & time to enjoy the great outdoors. I feel sorry for you people in the northern hemisphere, having to suffer the cold conditions you're having at present.

I got this for it's focal range, as I wanted a replacement for the 18-55mm kit lens I was using from my old xT. Christmas was good to me this year, a 50D and a 17-40mm f4L. I love it.

I'm leaning towards either the 60mm 2.8 macro or 100mm 2.8 macro. the 60mm having a nicer price tag ($399 versus $599)....but an EF-S lens...whereas I can at least take the 100mm macro and slap it on a full frame camera (should I ever be able to afford one).

I bought mine used off eBay for $520-something. I know some people are obsessed with date codes. my copy happened to be a UR date code, which was the first year they started manufacturing this lens. Old or not, it still gives me great photos. not sure what the differences between my copy and a newer copy (I think maybe only a cosmetic difference? I think the AF/MF button is recessed in newer copies. mine sticks out a bit).
I think new, the lens goes for around $700, so you didn't bad at all. :-)

Isn't the EW83J recommended for crop sensors...........??
Your right I am on a FF.........the 1 inch of plastic must do something, I'm sure that Canon tested it on the full frame, as they do with all their L lenses ???

Why the switch from 10-22 to 17-40L? I ask because I noticed you are on a crop body (like me) and I just purchased the 17-40L. A lot of people recommended the 10-22 for me, but I really don't want a UWA.

I couldn't make up my mind a few months back, UWA or the 17-40L I chose the 17-40L and was glad I did, I couldn't be happier with it but.... I did still want a UWA so I just ordered the Sigma 10-20. maybe now I will be content for a little while

I have a question for all the users of this lens in this thread that use this lens on a CROP body..... do you guys find F4.0 is actually usable throughout the entire focal length range and f4.0 on this lens mounted on a crop body produces tack sharp images?

I've owned this lens for a little over a week, and have not been dissappointed...an I am guilty of being a pixel peeper. I do find f/4 usable, but it is sharpest between f/5.6-f/8...at least in the images I've shot with it.

so how would this lens fair in low light situations at F4.0 in terms of sharp usable images on a crop body?
i know this lens is a big winner on a ff body... just not sure about it on crop... im trying to really decide if i want this lens as my walk around on my soon to be new camera in the Canon 7d or if i want to go 3rd party and get the Tamron or Sigma that give you F2.8.

In low light, f/4 is VERY limiting (unless you are using a flash). If you are looking for an everyday lens, and shoot in low light fairly often, id recommend going with a lens that is at lest 2.8...and fast prime would be even better ;)

yes.... thats just it.... i do a bit of everything including low-light stuff. Unfortunately getting any kind of canon L primes if out of the question due to $$$. I keep coming back to the Sigma 30mm F1.4 lens when i think prime but cant help but think that it would be so limiting as a "walk-around" lens.

Personally, Im a prime guy. My 35L is my go-to/walk around lens and dont find it limiting at all. The sigma 30 1.4 would definitely be a good option, back when i had a crop i used had the canon 28 1.8 and liked the FL a lot, but it comes down to weather you prefer primes or zooms.
Either way, i wouldnt recommend getting the 17-40. Its a good lens, but not for what you are looking for

I've not used mine for some time on my crop camera - but I did go to Barcelona in January 2006 when I used my 350D.
Depending on what you are shooting, F4 is ok.

ISO200, F4, 1/4s 17mm. And hand held - so pixel peeking I'm sure its not as sharp as it could have been - it was also raining! I'd also only just got the lens that Christmas. Looking at the Exif, the flash fired too - though I'm not sure if it was pop up or external!

looks like it would be a pretty good deal. I've never owned a sigma or tamron les before though. I'm seriously considering the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L as my next lens....that or the 24-105 f/4 L IS.
I don't know this seller at all, so I'm not endorsing it, but thought it might be a good deal for somebody.
