Well, you'd be getting an equivalent field of view as if it were 27mm which I personally would not consider very wide.

For an APS-C body, I think I'd prefer something that started at 10 or 11mm on the wide end.

Thanks for the comment on the photo JayStar86! It's a pretty typical Vancouver shot, but that's okay i like it! We have to have a photomeet here in Vancouver sometime, i'd love to meet fellow photographers here in the city!

I'll be honest i've only used the 17-40 once on my 7D and that picture is it basically! And so far its pretty good, but 17mm on any crop isn't that wide compared to FF obviously. So far its going quite well on the camera, takes a big of getting used to coming from a FF body though. I would use it as a daytime walk-around and a landscape lens on a tripod with cable-release and mirror-lock ect. That's just me, and i'm no pro. :)

Edit: That Rx-7 photo is pretty awesome, and yes please post some rig-shots! This lens was made for rig shots of a FF!!!

well i haven't ever really owned FF camera so there really isnt that difference for me that your probably experiencing of things not being wide enough anymore.

So from what your describing it really isnt a night time lens as most have told me.

Thanks for the input.

I'm wondering how many people ever use this lens at anything other than the wide end. Who uses (say) the 24-40 range? Instead of this lens I bought the Sigma 12-24 and I rarely stray into 17-40 range.

40mm + OCF via cord isolated this area nicely I think:

Hi there, stunning photographs here!
Can someone tell me how this lens will perform on a 1.6 crop camera (my 500D). I am struggling between 16-35, (i really like this) 17-40, and maybe the more expensive 17-55..
My goal is to replace the 18-55 IS kitlens

17-55 is for crop bodies only, and don't try to do some tricks to use it on FF or 1.3x, even it can be done but i don't recommend it.

17-40 is the cheapest of the three, but still one of the greatest on both, crop and FF.

16-35 is the most expensive, and i really like it and prefer it, it is f2.8, many people said i don't need f2.8 for landscape, true, but i do many indoors shots with this wide without tripod or flash, so it is always safe that i have f2.8 instead of f4.

Now it depends on you if you want the lens for only crop bodies and not upgrade to FF or you have low budget so you can't afford little more expensive or if you need f2.8 in many low light situations where f4 is not enough.

17-55 is for crop bodies only, and don't try to do some tricks to use it on FF or 1.3x, even it can be done but i don't recommend it.

Well, since I have a 430exII, i usually see myself flashing around inside, with great results. I use my 60mm macrolens often because I think that is my sharpest lens right now. So when i must choose, I think sharpness goes first, then light sensitivity... budget is inbetween i guess, otherwise i would have bought the 5D including the 16-35...
Thanx for your advice, i will make up my mind someday in the near future!

Did you apply some sort of tilt/shift effect to that last image in PP? I really like the colors on the first one. I'm assuming you also edited that as well? Or is that straight out of camera?

Yup! I messed around by adding a quick mask while using the gradient tool to make a selection, inverting it and then added lens blur. I usually go through the standard raw conversion, subtracting the saturation and upping the vibrance. It's a habit now..

Man I dont know what to do, get a 17-40 or a 17-55mm (dont plan on going FF in a long time) but I dont have the funds for a 17-55. The shots here i'm seeing on crop bodies look really nice. Most of the time I'm not ever shooting at 18mm on my 18-55, I'm generally around the 20's.

2 things:

1. Go with 17-40L as it will be there always even if you go with FF or at least 1.3x crop body [1D series].

2. Do you really care about f2.8? i can say that 16-35 will be better choice over 17-40 in this case but it is over priced, and you said that 17-55 is a little bit out of budget then you can't get wide angle lens with f2.8 in Canon line.

I may recommend you to go with 17-40L as it is cheaper but really so high quality and amazing lens, and add one super/ultra wide angle like Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20 or any similar from another brands [Tokina for example] and you will have ultra wide side on the crop, but who knows, one day you will go FF or 1.3x then your EF-s lenses will not be used much.

Personally I'd reduce the light smoothing (or whatever it's called in Photomatix) so you don't see that halo around the objects.

I'd like to see the image with a SLOW shutter speed and a ND filter so u can make the water the classic "misty" shot.

I want this lens soooooo bad. Trying to sell or trade my 15mm fisheye to get this lens!

Thanks mate. I had a look at Pete Carrs tutorial on HDR'S & found it very helpful. Now to put his tips to work on my AEB images.
