Thanks mate. I'm in complete agreement with you, subtle HDR'S definitely look better & have a more natural look. I personally don't like the cartoony effects I've seen with some.

what do you guys think of this lens on a crop body? This lens looks amazing for the price of other L's..

7th of February 2010 (Sun), 13:16
^^ On a Crop you would be better off with a 17-55 2.8 IS - Covers the same length as the 17-40 plus a little more but better in low light conditions and it's as good as an L lens....
if you need a wide angle then may I suggest the Canon 10-22mm or the Sigma..

cometzx buy the 17-40L its a GREAT lens on a crop camera
It's on my crop camera more than any other lens!
You can buy the 17-40 and the Sigma 10-20 for UWA shots for about the same money as one 17-55 2.8 and the 17-40 is a very well built L lens that will last a lifetime. my cheap built, plastic 17-55 didnt!

(it's as good as an L lens....) I disagree. unless it sits in the house in a protective bag away from dust. plus its waaaay over priced for what it is.
If you want a indoor lens buy a indoor lens like the Canon Wide Angle EF 35mm f/1.4L USM that has a 1.4 Aperture
If you want a well built lens for reasonable money buy the 17-40.

Well, since you own them both!! Some of us, including me really like some good advice over the 17-40 and the 17-55 on a crop body.
I dont want wide angle, i allready own an 10-20 sigma. So its really a replacement for the kitlens. For me it is important that images really come out nice and sharp. I almost always shoot with a flash indoors. Since i got my 60mm macro i am getting quite annoyed by the softness of my other lenses...
What would you recommend me?
Thanx

I like the 17-40 on the XSi. I considered the 17-55 for a while but for what I do the better build quality suits me better. Besides I am going to upgrade to a FF camera soon.
If you almost always shoot with flash indoors you won't miss the F2.8 too much. If you're sticking with crop for a while I'd personally get the 17-55 since it's more versatile. If you're planning to upgrade to a FF camera in the future go with the 17-40 so you won't have to go through the sale/buy hassle.

Thanks! I assume you're referring to the one on the right - it was either that one or the one to the left. I chose to cut off the building on the right because I didn't wish for the tree in the lower right hand corner to have such a prominent spot in the composition.
I was a bit amused that 17mm on FF wasn't wide enough, but then again there isn't much distance between my spot and those giant buildings.

I'm actually worried about this although I know I shouldn't be. I'm moving from using a 20D and sigma 10-20 to the 5D classic and the 17-40. I know it's only 1mm but I shoot at 10mm SO often and would probably have gone wider in a lot of instances if I could have. ha!

10mm on a 1.6 crop equals 16 on a FF camera. If even 16 isn't always wide enough for you, 17 won't work. I thought the same, which is why I bought the Sigma 12-24. A great lens when used with care, and I have absolutely no regrets about buying it.
Doing the above calculation in reverse, to get the 12 I have on my FF camera, you would on a 1.6 crop need a focal length of 7.5. I've never heard of that (ignoring fisheye lenses). So with a 1.6 crop you simply can't get as wide as you can with FF.

I've been on the fence on this lens for a while I want a nice walk around, I'm thinking I may take the plunge, may have to sell off a few things and put some cash together for this one. Do many of you guys use this as a walk around, or do you use it for specfic uses?? I know it's a great landscape lens just wanted to see the other opinions
Thanks

Thanks for your comments, my friend from The Deep South. Both images are HDR'S, as you have probably already realized. They were taken on the way down to Warwick, which is in the south east corner of Queensland. Sadly, the waterfall wasn't flowing at its fullest potential "definitely no Niagara" & was only just a trickle at this time. The old hut was just one of many old abandoned dwellings along the side of the road.
Cheers.......Edwin.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. I had a test proof print of it done today, i am really happy with the way that it came out and its prompted me to get out and learn about printing. Also credit must go to the 5d; I had the test printed at A2 and the 5d file took that size in its stride, i still think there is plenty left in it- going for an A0 test tomorrow to see how that looks.
Yeah, its pretty stunning! Lots to look at :)
Thanks, well the scene itself is pretty stunning too :) UK landscapes always tend to be dominated by Scotland followed by the lake district and northumberland, as beautiful as those places are i think Wales doesn't get enough of a mention; hence why i am flying the flag.

Cheers, it took some patience, an hour or so shooting the ever changing weather and while standing in the lake edge i realised that i had two holes in my boots :( and in case you were wondering, yes it was a hole in each boot
As good as this lens is for its price point i feel that its performance is limited on a FF camera, i have cropped out the soft corners in the shot you all like and the lens is pretty well stopped down, that and I also shot through three filters which together cost more than the lens itself, but that said it still holds a special place in my heart and it is pretty much welded to my 5d and i doubt i will be able to replace it in the EOS system, unless of course Canon make a mk2 version ;)
Thanks again everyone for your kind comments.
Andrew.

Here's a shot from last night. I've been experimenting with star trails for a little bit now. First time with a subject other than my back yard.
Taken looking North East. The big dipper would be the most predominant stars in the image. I created a cool and warm version of the image. If you want to see the warm version, click on this image and it will take you to the gallery.

It is extremely frustrating. Ever since the Snowdonia picture appeared I have tried to view it, but the internet down here in Belize is so poor I haven't so far been able to see more than the top half. Particularly irritating since I am Welsh and know that area pretty well, but haven't seen enough to be sure whether I recognise it or not!

Cheers, well i have done test prints so far, have taken it up to A0 and it works pretty well, only on 90gram paper though, i think a large print is on the cards just looking for a decent UK printers that is relatively cheap.

I'm not sure what the laws are in California, USA in regards to what happened, but I have heard of drivers receiving tickets for reckless driving that resulted in an accident. The responding officer didn't make a fuss about anything, just showed up, asked everyone was ok and called a tow truck. He didn't even bother asking for any documentation (license, insurance, etc.).
