ok this is probably a newbie question, i probably should already know, but id like to see your respond..

when you do landscape shots, shooting at bigger aperture (ie f2.8-5.6) vs f8-f16/f22, are you using center focus point and focus at whatever is in the middle? or do you use 'ring of fire' (1d) or autofocus (where the camera will select the focus points)?

There are some really great shots in here.
How would this lens perform as a walkaround lens on a crop sensor? I tried the 18-55 kit lens on my 40D and liked the focal range. How would this lens perform?

On an Island about 10 miles away from my home town of Nanaimo, there's a series of "caves", caused by thousands of years of tides that have eroded a sandstone cliff.

I went there to shoot today, and got stuck in pretty heavy rain for about 2 hours. There was no shelter to speak of, nowhere to get out of the rain, so I just sat in the caves and took photos and REALLY enjoyed the lack of people, traffic and life in general. There was virtually NO sounds but that of the rain falling on the ocean, and a nice warm breeze blowing in. Fresh air and rainfall. What a wicked way to spend a sunday!

I converted this to B&W, because there was virtually no color anyways, as it was overcast, dim and grey anyways.

I put the ruler on the horizons in CS4 and they are as straight as can be.I think its the optical illusion of the horizon on the left handside of the image is a lot closer to me than the horizon on the right side of the image which leads off into the distance.

Thanks for the comments;).

Yes, also the first. For the second you went farther into the "cave" and to my mind the wall of the cave detracts from the image. Still mighty good, just not quite up to the standard you set with the first.

These remind me of a film photo I took years ago of a badly eroded brick wall in the close of Durham Cathedral in England. I wish I had it here to scan and post - I think you'd see why I think of it.

Thanks Edwin :)

No HDR whatsoever in those - in fact, those are the least processed images I've ever done! For all except the jetty with the vertical rods all I did was basic raw tweaks, slight 's' curve and bumped up the clarity slider a bit. The one with the vertical rods had some levels work on the rods in photoshop just to lighten them and bring out the detail.

Each had a slight unsharp mask applied. :)

In a couple days, I'll be trading my 17-40L for a 16-35 MKII. Before I make that decision and chisel it in stone, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with a little experiment, and take a photo through each lens, both on a FF? And if possible, through both on a crop sensor?

Those are some side by sides I'd really like to see. :D

I don't have both lenses but do remember reading a review of the two and the basic conclusion of the report was that the only real reason to buy the 16-35 was if you needed a faster lens. This was also a few years ago before the emergence of the higher ISO performance cameras that you own a couple of that can make up for the lack of speed in the 17-40. Personally, I think you're wasting your money in doing this switch. There's also plenty of hard evidence in the thousands of great pictures in this thread that that the 17-40 can deliver excellent quality images in the right hands.

Cheers!

I just had to make the decision and went with the 17-40. The extra money for the 16-35 just didn't seem worth it in this case. Since I plan to use the 17-40 for mostly landscapes (on a tripod), the extra stop didn't interest me. I've read that the 16-35 is sharper, but as you can see from the photos in this thread, the 17-40 is more than capable.

But therein lies the rub - I DO need faster glass, especially for a lot of portraiture work that I've been offered lately, as well as the night-time concerts and events, and my favorite - night time landscapes, cities, skies, storms, etc. And, by my best estimation, the 16-35 MKII can handle everything the 17-40 can and more. (Well, with the exception if that extra 5mm, but my 24-105 can handle that.)

And, you just CAN'T go wrong with wide. I wanted the 15mm fisheye, but realistically, that's a "fun" lens, for playing and experimenting. 2000 shots taken at a music festival at night all in fisheye would get pretty thin. I'm thinking I'll like the versatility of the 16-35 as a walkaround - AND, it retains it's value, so if I change my mind down the road and want to go back to a 17-40, I'll have no problem offloading it. :D

Just like FF vs crop... 24-70 vs 24-105... etc.

IMO and in my usage... the wide zooms like the 17-40 and 16-35 are predominantly used for landscape photography or architecture (not portraiture) which typically doesn't require a very large aperture, so the 17-40 with f4 max usually suffices. But if someone plans to use this as a walkaround, then I see the desire for the extra stop of light.

lol, i dont mean to hate on the 16-35L..... in-fact i would love to have that lens! if i had the dough i would get it! but putting dollars and sense together for my self I would probably opt to not get it considering its a whole lot of more money for just one stop! But for some people this doesn't matter. Personally i would keep this 17-40L as my UWA for outdoors and then just get a nice fast wide prime for indoors like a 35L.... thats also gets pricey and adds up to more than just getting a 16-35L alone.... but it also gives me two lenses and a lens that is 'truly' capable of indoor shooting at F1.4.

Excellent use of the 1000x ND Martin.D. Did you lighten the reflections relative to the sky in post-processing, or did you also use a graduated filter?

Thank you - The first one I dropped the temperature a little to bring out the blue, cloned out a few odd looking sticks and used the adjustment brush to darken parts of the sky to bring out more detail

The second image I raised the temperature to around 10k to bring out the orange - cropped and added border..

I had little time and so the only filter I used was the 10 stop..

They look good. Only nitpick would be in the first one, see if you can try to clone out your reflections in the headlight and the lower bumper. Nice shots otherwise.

I had a few minutes of free time last Friday at work and played with timed exposure. For a stand I had to set the camera on a rolling case and that is what is tilting the image... It turned out OK I guess for only having about a minute to get it set up before I got called back to set... Pay no attention to the van in the corner of the frame...

Thank you - but dont forget this lens on your camera will have a minimum distance of 27mm - if it's wide your after then maybe the Canon 10-22mm..
