I just got a new lens and the Alien Bees ring flash... obviously a little PP here, but shows the lens quality none-the-less : )
Took these with the ABR800 right out of the box. So be kind, I'm still learning how to use it.

Thought of getting this lens but I choose the 24-70 because of focal range, but I might get this lens to replace my "kit lens"... :)

you really need to get opanda's exif viewer! Right click and image with the exif intact and you can see the whole thing:
*Model = Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi
*Exposure Time = 30"
*F Number = F5.6
*Exposure Program = Aperture priority
*ISO Speed Ratings = 400
*Exposure Bias Value = ±0EV
*Focal Length = 17mm
*Exposure Mode = Auto exposure

for landscapes use f/8 and above, but when you shoot indoors low light then you will wish if you got f/2.8 or wider. ;)
I can use f/2.8 up to f/22 without any problems:lol:

Hey Guys
Would you think this would be a good lens to get first before the 70-200 f/2.8L IS? Do you really need f2.8 if you have like a good external flash?
Cheers

depends on what you're shooting. It's a fantastic lens provided you're not going to use your UWA for low light shots unless it's on a tripod (landscapes)... So if you're shooting parties or events inside with it, then the f/2.8 is a better lens, but if all you care about is a sharp UWA zoom, this is it. It's a landscapers dream because it's as sharp as it's f/2.8 brother (sharper than the first version), it's lighter and it's less expensive, but still weather sealed and still fast AF... Also the fact that it goes to 40mm has made it my perfect walk around lens.
The only real question is: Is the extra stop worth twice the price? ($1,449 -vs- $679!)
Yes the f/2.8 is a nice lens, but I'd rather have the $ for other lenses at this point. I'm also a landscape guy first so the extra stop isn't a big deal as I always have my tripod with me if needed and I prefer the lighter weight.

Sure thing. 17-40L @ 17mm, 30 seconds @ f5.6, ISO400. It was taken with my XTi. You will need a good tripod.

This was taken on a recent trip to Antelope Canyon. EXIF: ISO 100, F16, shutter speed somewhere around 2 seconds or so. The 17-40L captures a lot of detail, even in dark places. Full time MF also helps a lot in these types of situations. Unfortunately, converting to SRGB for web posting takes a bit away from the picture. Fantastic lens for landscapes, especially on a 5D.

Not as wide as you'd like on a 20d, of course I didn't expect to be shooting the interior
of my mothers house, we haven't seen each other for a VERY long time and go together
when I was down in FL this past spring, but, the 17-40 still pulls in a lot of area, even on
the crop sensors;
Handheld as best I could, here are the details
Exposure time: 0.033 s (1/30)
Aperture: f/4.0
ISO equiv.: 400

You'll most likely need to up the ISO speed or use a flash for most indoor stuff with this lens. Its really not intended for indoor work unless you can provide the available light, then its quite stunning.

Ben, you ALWAYS share amazing photos.
I own this lens, and I cannot produce the results that you are producing with it (reinforces the fact that it's more of the photographer who makes the shot than the gear itself).
I admire all of your work - if you could please inform me of the settings you used for your first shot there (sailboat), I would love to know. Also, did you use a CPL?
EDIT: just looked at the EXIF...got the info I was curious to know

Choose Landscape or standard mode [for landscape sometimes you don't need polarizer but it help though], and use f8-f22, for handholding i prefer sometimes f11, ISO 100, and try then to play with your shutter speed, i can handhold down to 1/40 if i keep steady but if in boats for example then i try minimum 1/80 [ofcourse @16-50 it is not much noticeable], that what i do when i travel and i don't use tripod, believe me, you can get really nice great results i assure you.
jacobsen1
6th of December 2007 (Thu), 10:07
Well I shoot a 5D, so no "modes".
Here's how I approach shooting though. I shoot Tv at least 75% of the time. Why? Because I want the smallest aperture I can get (biggest number) and I set the shutter to 1/125th to make sure I get steady shots on the boat (and anywhere else, I'd rather give up a stop or two on aperture and have a sharp shot, f/16 won't help if it's blurry). The I adjust the ISO (auto would be nice!) to get into a range I'm happy with in terms of noise -vs- DOF. I only swap to Av when I need a large aperture (small number) and want to set it manually, or to M when I can't get to a needed exposure because the 5D will only go to +-2EV. So if I need more I'll not the exposure, switch to M and dial in that extra adjustment. P would also work, but I like to force the 1/125th shutter speed, so for me I prefer Tv.
Thanks for the compliments!

Well I shoot a 5D, so no "modes".
Here's how I approach shooting though. I shoot Tv at least 75% of the time. Why? Because I want the smallest aperture I can get (biggest number) and I set the shutter to 1/125th to make sure I get steady shots on the boat (and anywhere else, I'd rather give up a stop or two on aperture and have a sharp shot, f/16 won't help if it's blurry). i know, all the time i was in Europe during my vacations i see blue sky and with no warning it turned gray with no time due to clouds or so.
Too bad, we have blue sky here everyday, the sun here burning all the clouds so easily, we got clouds just 2 or 3 days passing during past whole 2 months ago.

hi Tareq. Its a great place to visit and shoot...the look varies based on the time of year and sun angle. If you do get the chance to visit Antelope Canyon, by all means do so. I'm already planning a trip back. Its a great place to get creative if you don't want any of the 'standard type' pics.

I'm thinking about visiting Page, AZ. myself. Seems like there's lots of great photo ops near by.
I'm kind of intimidated by lower antelope canyon thing though. Heard a whole bunch of people have died there. How safe did you find your trip? Does the guide hang around to make sure everything is okay? Also, is there enough room to operate in there, i.e. with other hikers, photographers, etc.

Some people died at lower antelope canyon many years ago due to stupidity. A storm was in the area, and they were advised not to venture into the canyon. They didn't listen to the advice, and a flash flood filled the lower canyon. The canyons are very safe...lower does not require a guide, but the upper canyon does. There are several tour companies in Page, AZ that lead the tours. They all work well together, and the tour leaders work together to stagger the groups. Plenty of time to get your pics...most folks are polite and honor each other's space, so everyone gets their shots in. The tour guides also point out the photo ops to everyone. Upper antelope has wide areas, as well as narrow areas. I didn't have any problems taking the shots that I wanted. Naturally, during the summer months, you can expect larger crowds, but like I said the guides all work well together to ensure that the photogs get the most opportunities.

I am getting the 5D in March 2008. I plan to get this lens as my UWA to complement my 24-70 and my 70-200 for FF photography. The good news is that I have saved enough AMEX Bonus Reward points to get the 17-40 EF L for free :) As a bonus it uses a 77MM filter and that is the size of my B+W CP filter :) Life is good! From the photos posted here the 17-40 will be a fine adition to my kit.

yea I was sitting on the thought, and pondered the utility of each lens (usefulness in the field). I take back the idea of getting a 17-40 for now actually based on the fact that with the 17-40 I'd need to reply much more on a lens like a 70-200 or a sigma 50-150 to use as a primary lens. Whereas on the 24-105 I can buy that for now and it'll be able to shoot more various subjects. The fisheye is going to be a hellova lens to shoot landscapes with =D

It's excellent at 40mm, but even more ridiculously awesome at 17mm. I didn't think wide angle lenses COULD resolve so much detail!

Then use photoshop or photomatix to merge for HDR, give it a try, show us then we can guide you.
Thank you so much for answering my question.
Is there a dedicated function somewhere in the menus for HDR images in those two software names?

I didn't understand your question very well, sorry, forgive my bad English understanding.

No, no, not at all.
I meant to ask how to you actually do the merging in Photoshop or Photomatix (I have neither one of these two).
Is it in the menus of the software somewhere? If not could you please describe the process?

hz what type of filter did you use? any filter at all?
The only filter used was my B+W UV. The 17-40mm really does a great job with blue colors. Here's another shot with my 30D and 17-40mm lens, from the same afternoon; looking East with the Sun getting low on the horizon...
