Ok folks, I am trying to convince myself to break out the credit card again. There are some truly awesome shots on here, and I've looked thru over 100 of the 331 pages and what I'm not seeing is any band photos.. Does anyone have any band shots that they can share, preferably night or dark hall shots? Show me how it works for that, and I'll place the order.

Honestly, the 17-40 would not be my first choice for shooting a live music event under less than "solar" lighting conditions...
That's where the fast primes really shine and why Canon makes the 14 f/2.8 and 24 f/1.4

I agree, however at $1700 and $2400 those are both just a little out of my price range for this assignment.

Lower noise at higher ISOs is therefore, your friend...
The 17-40 is a very sharp lens at all f/stops so if you need that range of focal lengths, get one.

You're buying entirely too much gear for no reason at all. You need to slow down and learn about photography first before buying gear. If you need to "close the gap" between 40mm and 70mm (your 17-40 and 70-200) then close the gap using a 50mm prime and your feet. That 50mm 1.4 lens will smoke the heck out of that 24-70 in every way possible
got the 50mm 1.4...missing a stadart zoom like 24-70 or 24-105 for always on cam.
1.4x works with the 17-40?

50D +17-40 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art Sculpture Park.
A newbie question to hammer418 and any other members with the combo of 50D + 17-40-
I am a novice and so far I am happy with my 50D+15-85 combo. I am learning to postprocess for the desired look, pop etc but the 15-85 has not impressed me much (I know that I need to learn the skill of being a photog, and not to blame a good piece of glass) but I am just wondering if there is any mileage in the thought that 17-40 would help me get the sharpness, vivid colors etc.
I am planning to do a swap of lens. Any thoughts? If this is not the right thread for this q please ignore it
Many thanks

Nice shot - was that light hopping across the frame a reflector on a bike wheel
Thanks. I've been asked that a few times. I'm not sure. I was more focused on the oncoming traffic further up the street because I took this shot from the street and didn't want to get run down. The bike wheel sounds like a logical explanation.

Hi I was in a similar position. I loved the level of detail my 550D was capturing but the overall quality of the shots with the 18-55 kit lens was really disappointing. there was an overall lack of sharpness and colour representation etc. i was lucky enough to get a loan 17-40L for a couple of days so i revisited some places locally and duplicated old shots but this time using the 17-40. Now i know there is a difference in focal length and lighting/conditions were not exactly the same but there was a HUGE improvement in terms of overall pic quality. this lens kicks the ass of the kit lens. to me it was a lot of money and i saved for a few months to buy it but i am so glad i did.

Thanks for the info, but I am just wondering if I did not make it clear in my OP. It is 15-85 that I am having and not the 18-55 kit lens. I was having the 18-55 and just upgraded to the 15-85, and I agree with peterbj7 about the kit giving good results when i put some thought before clicking.
I am comparing the 15-85 and 17-40L ............not yet made up my mind.

There have been several threads on this subject in the 'lens' forum, but after much research, I decided that the 17-40 was best for me.
This comparison was done by a POTN member. I hope that it helps you decide. :)

i was just using the 18-55 as my example. my reason for replying first time round was simply to state that the 17-40 for me was a vast improvement over my kit lens.
do you have a dealer near by that you could go to to ask for a quick trial with your camera? thats what i did and studied the results at home. i could tell right away that the pics were much better.
i hope this helps :D

You're buying entirely too much gear for no reason at all. You need to slow down and learn about photography first before buying gear. If you need to "close the gap" between 40mm and 70mm (your 17-40 and 70-200) then close the gap using a 50mm prime and your feet. That 50mm 1.4 lens will smoke the heck out of that 24-70 in every way possible
Just looking back through the thread and spotted this little piece of wisdom. You're absolutely right, Ernie'...and it applies to me as well I guess.
Many years ago (early 70s) I had the dream job of spending a year in Antarctica with a main part of my job in our small base being project photographer.
I took with me a 24mm, 50mm macro, 85mm 1.8 and a 300 f4.5, plus my trusty Weston Master light meter! There were no decent zooms then, and no-one ever commented that I had missed opportunities. Of course, if I was going now I'd take my 17mm and no-one will separate me from my 135L, but it's absolute true that we don't have to "fill the whole range" of focal lengths. Use those feet!
