has anyone ever had the af/mf switch stop working? i can still slide the switch itself back and forth, but it doesn't take the camera out of auto focus mode.

I had that happen once, but then I realized I was in the wrong mode or I had aiservo turned on (don't remember which).

hi all, i want to upgrade my kit to better all around lens...
first my though to canon EF-24-70L but because my camera 550D i change my mind to 17-40...
it is ok? how the quality? i know this lens is weather shield and sharp but how the colors?
if you have use two of them ( 24-70 or 17-40) in 1.6x FOVCF camera body please give me an advise

I only can attest to the 17-40 on a crop body, and it's a great lens. Build quality is top notch, and colors are great.

My 17-40 is a notch below my 50 1.8 II in sharpness, but is my best lens for colors, even beating my 300 F4 IS.

My 300 is sharper, but I like the color better on 17-40. I don't know what it is about the lens, but color is very good. A good CP makes it even better.

lol. Those people on Flickr who think your shot "borrrows too much" from another artist are goofs. It's photography, not literature. There have been thousands of people who have taken photos of people in cars from that angle, and there are thousands using advanced post processing techniques using the color spectrum familiar to human eyes.

What's important is the emotion the image organically creates for the viewers.

A challenge - the first time you pop the 17-40 on the 5D, set it to 40mm, THEN look through the view finder, slowly zooming out. I bet that you can't keep yourself from squealing like an excited little girl as you get closer to 17mm.

A challenge - the first time you pop the 17-40 on the 5D, set it to 40mm, THEN look through the view finder, slowly zooming out. I bet that you can't keep yourself from squealing like an excited little girl as you get closer to 17mm.

Girls squee :p

if anyone is itching to get a 5D II, now's the time to do it with Canon's Loyalty Program. awesome prices! I wouldn't have gotten one otherwise.

well if you ever upgrade to a full frame camera, you'll be able to use the 17-40. not so much for the 10-22 :-)

Just got my 17-40L very excited to shoot with it.

And WhyFi, what ive heard is that the 17-40 is excellent on a crop body and it avoids some vignetting in the corners. As well as I love it on the crop because its in the prime range for a walkaround. Just my .02

I guess only time will tell.

I loved it on my cropped body. I had it on my crop body as my primarily lens for the longest time. somewhere way back in this thread I had a whole slew of images I took when I vacationed in Puerto Rico. this lens never came off my camera body (40D back then).

Sure, my 17-40 was virtually glued to my 30D and I have thousands of images to prove it - look through threads on 17-40s, I don't think that you'll find many bigger advocates than me. All that being said, it was purchased with my eventual move to FF in mind. Is it valid on a crop? Absolutely, no need to justify it. Are there better choices for a standard range zoom for a crop? Maybe, but it depends on your priorities.

Thats true, nicely said.
Im excited to experiment with it. And it is a bonus that i can use it on a FF if i decide to go that route.

I couldn't see myself getting the 17-55, although most say it is the absolute best thing since sliced bread for a crop camera. I knew I'd eventually go full frame, and couldn't see investing that kind of money when it could go towards some nice L lenses. I bought my 17-40 used off eBay. it's got a UR date code putting it at 2003 production, but it's never failed me. built like a tank indeed.

As the EW-83J is designed for the EF-S 17-55mm, it is a perfect match for the 17-40L on a crop camera. I use one too.

Thank you very much.

This was at the end of the day, the sun was setting behind a thunderstorm and the western sky was magnificient. I begged my friend to climb one more route so I could take some pics. I traded between my 17-40 and my 70-200. The one I posted here turned out very well but not without some Lightroom 3 trickery. It would've been much easier if I had brought my ND filters with me to the cliff but instead I cooked them pretty hard in the post-processing.
