Love the shot of the 17 mile drive. I work just down the road from that shot :D. The drive to work NEVER gets old.
Thanks. Yeah I was stopping at every turn out in that section. Beautiful place.

Hey guys, just a quick question about this lens. Ive got a 50d and i shoot motorcycle racing and fast action sports. Karts, cars, bikes... you get it? Will i be happy using this for now as im planning on getting a mk2 or mk3 1D camera sometime next year? Im noticing alot of private sales of this lens lately and wondering if i should get one as my wide angle medium zoom for my crop.
Thanks!

It will definitely handle the task of fast focusing and sharp images, but won't give you a very usable zoom range. Now, if the vehicles are stopped, and you can get close to them it would be great, but if you're looking to get moving shots as a spectator, it would be a waste of time. You'd probably be better off with a 24-105 or 70-200. Fyi, I use my 100-400L on my 50D for cars on a track.

Well, luckily for me i have free range of most of the tracks i shoot at and i have my 70-200 so must likely if and when i get the 1d as a second body ill be set. But its good to know it will be fast enough focus wise.
Thanks!

I am buying some wide angle lens. Have been looking for 17-40mm or lolympus 28mm 2.0. I know that lolympus IQ is sooooo much better but i am thinking is the 28mm wide enough for me.
So if you guys who own a 17-40 and a FF camera could take shot straight down for me(take shot from your shoes from eye level at 17mm so that i can see how wide this is)
When you look images taken 17-40 you cant see how wide that really is, so i hope someone will do this little test.

I'm not sure if there is any comparison between a Canon EF lens, and an adapted micro four thirds lens... I'm also not sure if there has been a side by side comparison of IQ...

You can't fit a 4/3 lens onto the EF mount - I assume the previous post was referring to an Olympus OM mount lens.
mguffin

I figured there was an EF to 4/3 adapter out there, regardless, it's still a silly comparison...
WhyFi
1st of December 2010 (Wed), 12:14
Sillier comparisons have been made. I, too, am looking in to some MF wide angle options to replace my just-sold 17-40, and OM mounts are among them.
Madweasel
1st of December 2010 (Wed), 12:15
I expect someone makes one, but it would have to incorporate a lens element to throw the focus far enough back. You'd therefore be held hostage by the quality of that lens in the adapter, which could undo any advantage the 4/3 lens would otherwise have.

17 is a world wider than 28. I just sold my 17-40 about a week ago, and I'm not in the habit of shooting my shoes, but this is across the table at Grimaldi's - for reference, I would think that the table is about 30" x 30"

I really enjoy this lens, and I don't usually use it for low-light, so I'm not missing the extra speed of the 16-35 2.8 (not to mention the 2X price tag).
just by taking a glance at all of the amazing pictures on this thread is more than enough convincing to go pick one up :-)
you can always rent one before you take the plunge.

I bought mine used 1.5 years ago. UR date code, so it puts it at the first year the lens came out (2003), but it's failed me not. I think the only difference between earlier versions and newer versions is the recessed buttons. bought it for $500.

Hi. This was a shot of the moon setting from the Haleakala summit in Maui, Hawaii (elev. 10,000ft). It was about 5:00AM and while waiting for the sunrise, this was the view from the other side.
Shot with 5d2, 17-40 @ 17mm, tripod, plus iphone to light the sign on the foreground. :)
exif: 30sec, f/7.1, ISO1250.

I've always believed the 17-40mm makes an excellent "walking around lens" on an APS-C body...

You're definitely right. Not exactly a "reference" image, but one of those "this or no image at all" kind of situations. Grandma's 90th birthday party, losing light fast, storm rolling in, kids running around, and I'm in the photo...somewhere :-) so it was just kind of "okay guys, if you want it, get your buts in the frame and make sure you can see the camera. we've got 30 seconds...GO!" haha. Probably shouldn't have posted it for the reasons you mentioned.

You're kidding, right!?
Wood or barbed wire is usual for fencing but razor-wire is not "usual". So the place was some sort of security installation fenced off by someone with lots of money. The houses somewhat middle-eastern village like and the sparse landscape is what we see on TV footage of these 2 places. So the conclusion was not really hard to come by.
