Great shot Matt, I really like the composition and the colour of the sky. Yes, you can lighten up the foreground in Photoshop, but a Graduated ND filter would have been the better option; essential bit of kit for sky and sunsets etc ;-)

Cheers Jef - Ill been looking into some ND filters, maybe something to ask for Christmass I think ;)

Regarding that image though - I have very slightly updated it and done two others, sorry if they are somewhat dull - but I like the colours :)

Cheers Jef - Ill been looking into some ND filters, maybe something to ask for Christmass I think ;)

Regarding that image though - I have very slightly updated it and done two others, sorry if they are somewhat dull - but I like the colours :)

Nice one's Matt, you actually need Graduated ND filters to control a partial part of the shot, such as the sky. The effect would be like this below; the sky is unchanged, but compare the foreground and the lighthouse between the two shots

http://www.jeff-smith.com/windmill.jpg

You can change the exposure between the sky and the ground so you get some light and detail in the ground. Graduated ND filter come in 2x, 4x and 8x and of course you can stack them.
I bought a set of 3 Cokin GND filters from Amazon, which includes the filter holder for £45. You also need to buy the adapter to screw onto the front of your lens to hold the filter holder, they are around £3.

Does anyone know if there are any better prices than what BH Photo has for the 17-40 right now.
Please don't say Adorama because I will never buy from there again...shipping was out of this world to Canada. I am also going to purchase the Canon 50mm 1.2. To bad the stores did not offer better prices for multiple lens purchases....they should at the darn prices these days!

When I lived in Ottawa, I 'generally' did not order anything expensive from the states. Whether it was camera gear, or stuff for my other hobbies. The shipping and customs charges almost always add up. And even if it does come out cheaper, it is never by a significant amount.

Shot this yesterday just before the rain came.

Oh wow you are right!! I just looked at Henry's and put both in my cart and it came back saying that I qualified for free shipping....so with that it comes to just over 200 dollars cheaper than BH. Now to just push that trigger lol!
OOOp's I goofed BH is actually $191 and change cheaper than Vistek and Henry's. See what happens when you have about four tabs running at the same time lol! It tells me that the duty for lens across the border is duty free. BH incorporates all fees in the price as they act as the broker.
I am still going to search a few other stores just to make sure first but I think I may ust have to go with BH.

If you do order from across the border, call an agent from the store and confirm all the shipping and handling costs. I've received stuff before at my door along with a $50 customs receipt. I bought mine from Henry's in store in Ottawa. It was a little more expensive than what B&H are advertising, and that was with some big discount going on at the time. However, I believe shipping & handling from the states would have cost me more than what I paid.

I hear ya! I just checked Camera Canada where I actually purchased my 5d MarkII from and they are just $83.84 more than BH and that is with shipping insurance.....so I might be better off going that route. Oh the decisions surrounding this are enough for a headache to develop lol!! Never figured spending $2800.00 would be so hard! Just want to get the right deal.

Here is the pricing from Camera Canada and I know if I go to my local Future Shop store they will beat that price to get my business just like they did when I got my 24-105.

Nice lens, but I have big problems with Chromatic Aberrations around leaves in shots like this one. This image was so bad I decided to desaturate it and add a slight tint to give it an ethereal feel.
Does anyone else have the same problems and do you know of the 16-35mm f/2.8 L has the same problems?

Hello all.

The sample archive is a massive influence on my buying choices, more than overdue me adding a few shots of my own!

I love the 17-40 for all its flaws, there is something about the rendering that is addictive.

Shot from recent Highlands trip.

got my copy yesterday to replace the gorgeous EF-S 10-22 ... really nice lens. It's my first L-lens. Guess, we'll have a lot of fun together ...

Hmm, no, it's not normal, maybe you got some misaligned element(s). The 17-40 got a very well controlled CA ( this or I got a really good copy ), even against harsh light. I had the 16-35 f/2.8 II, but sold it because I'm was using the 17-40 more, and in some instances, the 16-35 showed me heavy CA and flaring, that the 17-40 never did in the same conditions.

The sun is just behind that tree on the right. And no noticeable CA ( well, there is a bit, but really not that annoying ;) ).

@ Skoov : Flaws ? What flaws ? Nice picture Sir !

@ gepixelt : Welcome to the club :) Nice composition on that shot ;)

Jef96, I recommend Lightroom 3 for removing CA. It's got lots of lens profiles already in so you can do it automatically, but you can also control it manually too. I find it works superbly well, and can remove all CA from any of my wideangle lenses, including the Sigma 10mm fisheye.

What flaws?

CA and slight softness on the edges, nothing critical though.

Thanks a lot, the colours look better outside of a browser, need to improve my save for web skills. Only a bit of CA on the corners, and facing into the Sun, so being fussy.

I love the 17-40l, given the 16-35l is apparently only slightly improved in areas I struggle to see what alternatives there are on FF, aside from certain primes. And travelling a lot in bad weather, the weather sealing has been more than useful.

The 17-40 is a great versatile lens but would welcome a mark II version IMO. Mainly in edge performance and CA. Everything else is really nice about the lens, though. I dig the smooth as butter zoom ring :p

I really hope the patent that came out a few months back about the 16-40 f/4 was true, that would be perfect. Especially if they did better with edge performance.

Lucky, the CPL sort of acted like a ND filter so I could get a slow enough shutter speed to sufficiently blur the people out :)
