Thats what I was thinking too. Might end up selling the 80-200 to get a 135 down the road.

Here are a few I've taken in the last few days with the 17-40 and 5D. I've found myself sticking with the 24-70 most of the time and forgetting about my other lenses though.

^^ Great catch on colors! It's been dark and glumy most of the time here in Chicago. Today is the first day it really feels like spring. I can't wait to get out and shoot some colorful shots!
btw I love megaman!

Nice pictures, which filter were you using on the 2nd picture (with the posts)? I really like the rich sky. Did you bring it out in PP or with a filter?

Thanks fellas! The only filter I used was a polarizer. You can see some vignetting in the upper left corner of the second photo because I shot too wide with it attached. I boosted the contrast and saturation a bit in Aperture.
The first one was tough to get because the wind was blowing the entire time.

I can see your dilemma. From all the reviews I've read the 17-55 is optically an excellent "L" - like class lens. It suffers a bit on the build quality but that's it.
The way I see it is like this:
17-55mm f/2.8 Pros:
+1 Stop faster
+IS
+15mm more reach
Cons:
-Lot more money $$$
-EF-S (this can be insignificant or a minus, if you have plans to upgrade to a larger sensor camera)
-Build Quality (not an "L", so no red ring)

Such a hard choice to make. The 17-55 Does have more "stuff" to it. But In the end I think it just might come down to price...

Go back a few pages or search a few of my threads in the lens forum. I've had the 17-40, tamron 17-50, 17-55 IS, tamron 28-75, and canon 24-70. What am I left with? The 17-40L and 24-70L. I'd take the Tamron again in a heartbeat if I needed F/2.8.

I've been struggling with this for awhile as well. While I haven't purchased either yet, I've made up my mind to get the 17-40L. As I've said before, I can't justify paying $1k for a cheaply built lens that arguably has issues with dust. Now if both the 17-40L & 17-55 IS were $679 each, that might be a different story as it's a lot easier to overlook cheaper build when the trade-off is cheaper price. Even though the 17-55 IS is f2.8, Canon is dreaming if they think it's worth $1k IMHO.

I can't blame you...I guess unless you are stuck with a cropped 1.6x body for life and you really need IS, then the 17-55 makes most sense, oh yeah and you are a rich bastard...LOL.

I know, it is like having half an "L". WTH? 1/2 the L for 1:1 of the price...weak.

FYI I sold my 17-40 for a 16-35 II. I've had it over a month, and I'm still not convinced it's the right choice. Bigger, heavier, more expensive for what? I posted some comparison shots in the 16-35 II thoughts thread... The color issue is there though. The 17-40 is greener which is better for landscapes, but worse for other things. It's a tough choice honestly. I'm pretty close to selling my 16-35 II to go back to this lens....
of course I also returned a 70-200 2.8 IS for the f4 IS version. Smartest thing I've done there, but around here most people think I'm crazy....
Cap0ne
29th of April 2008 (Tue), 16:17
Thanks for the info ;) . Heavier and bigger it's not a problem for me (not even the sharpness because both are more than ok for me). But f4 vs f2.8 is, because i'm shooting a lot in low light...

It's well known that the 17-40 is just as good for landscapes. The reason for getting the 16-35 is f/2.8, if you need it then that's that - if you don't.. save yourself some cash and swap back.

not true IMHO... It also comes down to needing the 16mm UWA. There IS a difference...
but yeah, the whole 2.8 bit is wasted on scapes for sure. And the 82mm filter is a PITA.

I find it hard to believe that a person couldn't survive or get by with 17mm vs. 16mm really. I think you'll be just has happy with the 17-40 for landscape shooting.

If you really like 16mm then why not get the Sigma 12-24? It might also be a PITA for filters but is even wider.

Cheers guys :)
I personally don't really need f2.8 with this focal lengh lens and find even the 17mm gets fairly wide on the 5D (FF body) so not particulary craving for anymore coverage either but if overall image quality are improved with the new 16-35 II, I'd strongly consider moving to it.
I've been meaning to do some research on it so I may start from finding that 16-35 II thougts thread Ben was talking about :)

had it. It's not sharp on FF really and it's colors are a bit wonky. The filters do work with cokin x pros though. Just no CPs. But yeah, it was a bit too much for me, but I do notice and appreciate the difference between 16 and 17mm. I've also thought about the 14mm prime, but it's a bit spendy unless I ditch the zoom.

I've looked at the 16-35LmkI and the 17-55 side by side and if you compare through the VF, the 17 looks a bit on the tight side...sadly this lens isn't a 16-40 rather than a 17-40...
ps: this is done through a 30D so I can't comment on FF perspectives between 16 and 17mm...yet =)

No filter. It was a gloomy day, so I was able to get the Tv & Av I wanted without a filter. And, I wanted the slight glare off the rocks, so didn't want to use a CPL. On a sunny day at this site(Hayden Falls -- Dublin, OH), you need a filter to get any blur in the falls.

Not ND .. Photoshop...
There's actually some major surgery done on this:
- Cloned out two cars parked behind main subject
- Clone work done to even out the rock wall
- Clone work to extend/smooth the parking lot line
- Cloned out several larger stones and moved some others
- Sky Tweaked
- Car Tweaked
- Front Left Tire Tweaked
- Levels on brick building tweaked
- Selective desaturation to keep parts of the car really gun metal grey
- Selective oversaturation to make the rusty areas pop more
IIRC, I ended up with about 20 layers in the original .psd file...
Glad you like it.
