I have a question, could this lens be a good cheap(for an L glass) alternative for portraiture on a crop body? 1.6x(7d). (27-64mm) equivalent to the 24-70mm except for the 2.8 aperture of course.. I don't think there would be much distortion at 17mm(x1.6=27). Plus i will definitely buy a FF body in a close future so this lens will be attach to it after. Cause right now i only have a 70-200mm and in crowded place it is.. let's face it, it's pretty tight! So i need something wider but not a prime. This lens look amazingly sharp for landscape especially on a FF body. Went trough 200 pages of samples and it is incredible. So is this a good investment for a portrait lens? or should i save up some more cash and get the 24-70mm 2.8?

I like it for portrait type shots on my 7D.

If you are definitely going full-frame and can live with f/4 then you can't go wrong with this lens. I think it is a great value compared to the 16-35 and 24-70. I love it on my 7d as I never really shoot anything wider than ~24mm, and it is a whole different animal when you upgrade to FF. The only thing I could really see upgrading to for myself is the 24 1.4 II, but you said no primes so I think you'll be more than happy. I'm sure you've seen the awesome portraits in this thread.

I like it for portrait type shots on my 7D.

If you are definitely going full-frame and can live with f/4 then you can't go wrong with this lens. I think it is a great value compared to the 16-35 and 24-70. I love it on my 7d as I never really shoot anything wider than ~24mm, and it is a whole different animal when you upgrade to FF. The only thing I could really see upgrading to for myself is the 24 1.4 II, but you said no primes so I think you'll be more than happy. I'm sure you've seen the awesome portraits in this thread.

Thanks Jake for the input. I guess even at 27mm it does okay for landscape by the time i upgrade to a FF

You can definitely use this lens as portrait lens.

I'm sold after seeing this picture. Sure it's on a 1D serie.. :rolleyes:
But the image is razor sharp. Very small distortion on a x1.3.

17mm on APS-H is lovely!

Yes, just that the portraits have a bit more depth perspective than you may expect. Anyway, you have your 70-200mm for occasions when you need a flatter perspective, and have the space to manage that. So this lens should work well in your case. If you are planning to upgrade to FF soon this looks like the best choice. Even I am eagerly waiting for a 5D Mark II upgrade to be announced.

Lovely shots, mattjns93. My only complaint is why in the heck are there villages and suburbs in those locations? Those should have been parks, left alone.

Those villages predate the notion of national parks by about 1000 years.

Thank you! I can see the same effect in your shots. Traveling really helps our photography so much. I know, for me, it's really opened up my eyes to new photography and helped me improve. Thank you studying abroad :D

Thanks! I can see where your coming from, but they really (in my opinion) add to the beauty rather than detract. They are part of that specific landscape. If you go a mile or two from the town I was in, buildings quickly dwindle away.

I just got my 17-40 the other day, I thought I'd share one of my sharpest shots with it yet. It doesn't show the width since it's at 40mm, but it does show the L quality. :)

I was at the store today. Had the 17-40mm and the 24-70mm in my hand, torned to chose one of them. At the last very second on the instant (before i change my mind) took the 24-70mm with me. Now i can't wait to very test it out see if i made the best decision! But I'm very satisfied with my pick and now i understand why we're calling it "the brick" :lol:

Hmm - I assumed that most of wavering was the line of flight of the fireworks. It was quite windy and some details were sharp. I could be wrong though. Might check out some of the other shots more carefully.

Thanks! People with the super sharp landscape shots most likely use sturdy tripods.

Yeah, but I still look at pictures on here and on Flickr and feel like my images aren't as sharp, even non-landscape shots.

I feel like my pictures don't look as sharp as some of the ones in here.

Also consider the fact that at 1024px maximum, the perceived sharpness of an image here is coming from the re-sizing technique and process more so than the actual sharpness of a lens.


If you browse around you can find absurdly complex processes for taking an image down to 1024px with the smoothest and sharpest possible look.

Personally I found a happy medium that works pretty well but can be put into an automated photoshop action and batch processed for all my images without having to think too much.

^^^ this reminds me of an Antigua wedding I shot a couple years ago....

the boys had rented a couple of these for pretty much 1/2 a day... they were doing crazy stunts - aka boys being boys... then let me have a go on one for a bit....

and to this day, I tell myself I will never ever ever again get on one of those, on the ocean, hours after shaving...

I have to agree, I like this lens so much better on my 5DII, I barely ever even mounted it on the 7D, it was mostly my Sigma 10-20 on that body.

@jacobsen1 what happened to yours out of curiosity

sold it and the 5Dii right before the 1Dx announcement. I was hoping they'd announce a 6D (ie <$3k) but in the interum I needed a UWA for a crop so I just switched it out. I'm now back with a 5Dii w/17-40 and have an extra $350 in my photo budget thanks to the timing of things.

We had no outside light sources for the whole duration of this flick.

Also forgot to lock down the Kelvins.

Very foggy here today in the uk, so I took the camera out tonight and took these.

Focusing was a nightmare as at f4 and the manual focus screen installed everything was mostly black :)
