Very nice. Man, I've been testing my 17-40L on my 5D II, and it's even sharper than it was on my 7D.
Also, I've noticed the 17-40 sort of smokes the 24-105 on my 5D as well.

Life tends to run away with my time lately but I managed to sneak out before work the other day to catch the sunrise down in Canal Park. Its the first time I went out shooting landscapes since I swapped my ZE21 for the 17-40 (plus some other stuff) and I can say I am happy I did it - the 17-40 didnt disappoint.

Ummm, did you shoot the fish???

Interesting thought process on several counts. Firstly,to deduce that a fish obviously moving water through it's gill plates is "dead". Secondly,to fabricate the notion that it had been "shot".

As someone who treks solo more often than not,I find that something of known dimensions helps to extrapolate relative sizing in correlation to any given scene. Were I to cite the fact that said rifle is 42" long in overall length,then play the fish sideways in approximation of same...most would be dealt an inkling. Though admittedly,I greatly enjoy the Doom & Gloomer's oblivious outlook and their haste to put a spin on things polar opposite from reality.

Though on the brightside of the equation,the 17-40 is equally adept at capturing Dead Fish,should the mood strike.

You're getting a bit strange, Swami.

The fish look like rainbows and coho salmon to me. But the identification has nothing to do with my own viewpoints on what is ethical and what is not, nor do official daily limits. I don't care for the method used to catch the fish, nor do I care for the amount of fish taken. To me it falls into the "meat hog" category.

Nor do I condone the use of lead bullets, for a wide range of reasons from the toxic effects of lead bullet fragments in meat to the poisoning and death of numerous raptors (including the bald eagle) and other animals who prey on shot game and ingest lead fragments.

You can tell a lot about a person in how they treat living things. A person who delights in the death of a creature is usually known as a psychopath, or at the very least a sadist.

Curiously enough and once again to your chagrin,there IS in fact direct correlation to Species I.D. and their respective Limits,whether it Fish,Fowl or otherwise. Again,you not so curiously remain at the mercy of your "abilities","experience","comprehension" and "understanding"...which is side-splitting laughter by itself.

Could it get ANY better than you once more throwing caution to the wind and feeling compelled to wax eloquent upon the things you know the LEAST about?!!? You did so "well" with Fish and now you HOPE to apply that same "knowledge base" to Hunting?!!? Too funny!

While in Mexico at our resort. This was a pretty shaky dock lol!
This is straight out of the camera. I still have so much to learn with this lens.
The second image is the first try with the B&W 10 stop filter.....which I really found out is not all that easy to get right off the first try. Especially when your knee high in salt water and your husband is stating to you how worried he is about your camera and gear taking a bath lol! I will just have to keep at it. At least now I have the Big stopper to play with. Of course it came the day after we left for Mexico. But thankfully B&H got the filter to me in time for the trip. So yes now I have two of them. I prefer the Big stopper much better..no unscrewing from the lens much easier just sliding it in the lee holder.

Organic Treats:

I like the Landscape Shot, including the 3 Chairs gives it a nice bit of foreground interest. I could imagine myself sat in one of those Chairs for quite a while admiring the view!

Everyone elses Shots are great as well. Been studying this Thread for a while considering buying a 17-40L as so far my 300f4L is my only L Glass. That will soon change as I have ordered a 17-40L & am just waiting for it to arrive!

Speaking from experience, the 17-40 is not fast enough for concerts unless you're using flash. If you're trying to user natural light, it's not going to be consistently capable. I usually find myself using my 50 1.4 @ F2 - F2.8 and ISO-1600 for concerts. Then again, it depends on the concert and the available light.

none of the above? If you want a wide angle lens for you 7D get either the canon 10-22 (sharpest and least flare), sigma 10-20 (cheapest) or tokina 11-16 (flare flare flare but 2.8). If you want something for low light, look at a prime, the widest I know of (that's fast) is sigma's 20mm 1.8.

But the 17-40 and 16-35mm are full frame UWA lenses. There are a lot of compromises because of that. If this is still the range you want (it's not really wide on a 7D) get the 17-55 IS or one of the third party version. 2.8 and IS will help a lot.

Interesting thought process on several counts. Firstly,to deduce that a fish obviously moving water through it's gill plates is "dead". Secondly,to fabricate the notion that it had been "shot".

As someone who treks solo more often than not,I find that something of known dimensions helps to extrapolate relative sizing in correlation to any given scene. Were I to cite the fact that said rifle is 42" long in overall length,then play the fish sideways in approximation of same...most would be dealt an inkling. Though admittedly,I greatly enjoy the Doom & Gloomer's oblivious outlook and their haste to put a spin on things polar opposite from reality.

nah heard its not safe since they had a big fire a couple of years ago. Fairchild owned this and this is where the A-10 Thnunderbolt better known as the Warhog was built. It's pretty much a empty shell now.

Had to pick this lens up. Was considering the 17-55 because of IS, but if I move into a full-frame body, this will work when the 17-55 can't.

I would say it may not be wide enough, but it all depends on your shooting type and your opinion.

I love it on my 5DII :cool:

Yeah, I'm not a landscape shooter and I've never really seen a need for a wide angle. I just feel like it's good for the meantime to cover my wide range. I'm thinking of selling my 35/1.4 and getting a 135L, but I just need something to cover the wider range for now.
It would be a decent wide angle for you in terms of field of view. Wide, but not quite ultra wide. If you use your 35 wide open, you may find the F4 a little limiting, but its a fine lens otherwise.
