As it relates to use on a 5D (ie, Full Frame...)
- Tack Sharp (even at f/4)
- Good corner sharpness
- Only 1mm narrower than the 16-35
- Lighter
- Less Expensive
And it translates into a good walking around lens on a 40D @ 27-56mm effective FOV...

It's a great ultrawide lens on a full frame camera. It's quite limited on a cropped sensor though.

i'm going towards the 5D, the image that the 17-40L produce is just great, it is really a replacement of my 10-22 on a crop

I've changed my mind and thinking of get one instead of the 17-55 to my 400D. Is it wide enough for landscape shots?
JCheungPhoto
28th of May 2008 (Wed), 17:07
some landscape shots may need wider, but for some it's not bad. On a crop camera you'll want a tokina 11-16 f/2.8 or EF-S 10-22

unless you absolutely need that f/2.8 aperture capability, the 17-40 is a much better buy being half the price for only one stop slower

Here's my contribution... the 17-40 is a lens that is usually mounted on my 20D for landscape shoots... Occasionally I use it as a portrait lens too... Versatile enough, I must say, as long as you know how to squeeze out the best out of it...

Strange request time: Anyone out there still own a kit lens along with the 17-40L?
I'd love to see a comparison at 18mm of something landscape-ish at f8 or whatever you normally would shoot at. If the result doesn't utterly blow the kit lens away.... why am I tossing $650 at it? (I know it's built better and all that)
I've tried replacing my 'walkaround' with the Sigma 18-50EX, which didn't go so smoothly. Read about it here if you are interested. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=515765) That leaves the 17-40L as one of the only logical choices, or take another stab at the Sigma.
That's kinda my dilemma right now.

Most lenses are going to be on par with each other at f/8. As you noted, the extra money gets you nice build quality. It also yields sharper images wide open and more exotic lens elements to reduce flare. If none of these are of concern with your current lens, then save the cash ;)

No, was shooting in Manual. These were taken Jan of '07 and I had only had the camera since Christmas and was (and still am) learning what works and what doesnt. Here is one taken at 24mm, f/22, 1/60sec, ISO200. Luckily Crater Lake isnt going anywhere anytime soon, so I have time to get the "perfect" shot. :D

Nice. You don't want to use f22 either. on my copy f22 is worse then f4. Mine is pretty sharp between f5.6 and f11. I prefer f8.

basically, the 17-40L is like a kit lens on steroids (for lack of effort in coming up with better wording). It is similar in focal length, but is sharper, produces better colors, has a constant aperture, is built like a tank (as much as precision glass can be built), and has some fast focusing.

I love the 17-40 mm especially for landscape/cityscape and as a general walk-about lens. Attached here is a shot of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, no post processing and a 100% view. Used a higher saturation and sharpness setting under the custom Picture Style selection.

After weeks of debating the never ending 17-55 2.8IS or 17-40 4L saga I visited my local camera shop with a fathers day £350 budget!!! But my wife said "buy the lens you really want". :D
With the battle of these two lenses still ragging in my head the shop produced these two lens for me to have a look at. The 17-40 felt so much better to hold , with the 17-55 feeling like an 17-85 on steroids !!
This and the worries after reading about dust and IS failures. The fact that the hood was £40 on top of the lens so £690 in total, compared with £500 ifor the 17-40, and given that my budget fund was only £350 really well I bought the 17-40 and am really pleased.
Hopefully will get some better pictures over the weekend when I have more time.
Its a pleasure to be part of this archive :)

Here's one of my first shots with this lens. I took the family to Ponce Inlet, FL this morning and got a few shots in while we were there. The shot below was taken at around 11:45 in the morning so the sun is really beating down on us. In the picture the sky was really washed out so I tried to recover some of the blue in the sky using some PP in CS3. The sharpness of the lens is what I'm so thrilled about. It's awesome!!! :D

Mike, I've recently downloaded the newer DPP but my simple workflow remains the same. (playing around with the picture style and WB)
The thing I like better about the newer DPP is that you don't loose the file name when you export the photo to the Photoshop.

Have you noticed a loss of detail in the newer versions of DPP compared to 2.2? I had this problem with the XT and 17-40 when switching from 2.2 to DPP 3.0. Images look amazing with DPP 2.2, but many become OOF and blurry in 3.0 + I had to switch back.
It looks like you aren't having any problems with the results you are getting.

I usually let the camera decide in AV mode, going to f/8 or f/11. ISO 200. If I see that something is not right in my screen, then I will make amendments from there. That's for landscape. And like what Mike says - RAW.
JCheungPhoto
30th of June 2008 (Mon), 02:06
If I'm on vacation and have time to spare, I shoot in manual only. For landscapes, I try for ISO under 400 (I try for 200 most of the time since my 5D has very little noise around there) and an f-stop of around f/11-16. Then I adjust my shutter speed using spot/evaluative metering. Most of the time this is w/o a tripod since I'm at placed normally where a tripod would be dangerous to others. When I want shallow depth of field, I simply set the f-stop to f/4 and lower my ISO further. When I shoot the shutter speed is the last to be set

I dont have a 17-40 but i shoot everything in raw, where i can make adjustments in DPP software. And i go by my histogram works great when you have no idea that you are clipping highlights.Bottom line get a 8GB CF card and shoot in raw its awsome;).Sean .L

Still, would those shots really look all that different if the shutter speed had been 8 seconds (for example) as opposed to 30? I mean, I understand slow shutter to show water movement, but at what point is it just overkill? Would the same shot exposed for 8 seconds with fewer NDs look all that different? Perhaps it would... just seems excessive to stack 10 stops worth of filters.

Jeff didn't stack filters. It's a 10 stop ND, single filter. If you shoot the same scene with shutters much slower than they were, the lake portion would still show ripples in it, where as it looks smooth here. Also it helps to get the whispy moving cloud look as well.
Shooting around F8-11 on a bright sunny day (mid afternoon), shutter speeds are around 15 seconds with it. Overkill, maybe in some situations and lighting conditions. The waterfall shot would have been better suited for something less dense, but we used what we had.
Oh, and YES it does look like a screw on lens cap :D

Finally, a straight answer! That's all fair enough - it does seem like a pretty specialized application (a 10 stop ND that is.)
