Dorman
18th of August 2008 (Mon), 13:43
I think you might have to step up to the larger system, I believe it's the Cokin Z system. Something tells me that the P filter holders would show since you're using more of the lens, but perhaps I'm incorrect.

I think Cokin makes a "Thin" P filter holder that has only one slot instead of two.

I use a P series holder and I cut all but one of the holders off - that seems to work.

A good shot, but you've overdone the filtering. There's no way the reflection of the sky should be brighter than the sky itself (in my opinion).
Dorman
18th of August 2008 (Mon), 15:05
Cokin makes two P series holders, the regular 3 slot one could be fashioned and cut off to work, or they make a wide angle holder that will take only one filter. Perhaps the wide angle holder would work with no vignetting.

The 7-Point book really hypes on using Camera Raw and then Photoshop for the finishing touches like LAB and sharpening. Scott goes into some trickier stuff like painting with light and stuff working with layers. It's all pretty much usual stuff if you post process using CS2 or CS3. The LAB mode trick was a new one for me and I've really been pleased with that nice little color boast touch it has given the shots I use it on. This lens inparticular works well with this trick since it's primarily a landscape lens for me.
BTW...Ben Jacobsen's images in this thread really show what this lens is capable.

Ok maybe Ill just go read that art your talking about, as Ive been lab sharpening for a while due to another book I read at BN haha, The books are 50$ most of the time so I read them and go home and do it over and over till I remember it =)
I want a book thats like REALLY advanced landscape editing and I can't seem to find one

I'll save you the trouble of having to go the B&N to look through the book to find where Scott talks about LAB and Apply Image. Here's basically all you have to do...
1. Convert the image Mode to LAB (obviously)
2. In the Image menu at the top of the screen, choose Apply Image.
3. The Layer box will indicate the layer the effect is being applied to.
4. Click the Blending drop down list and select "Soft Light". "Overlay" will work too but it's a much stronger effect and to "over the top" for my taste.
5. Click the Channel drop down list and you'll see listed there "LAB", "Lightness" (I think), "a" channel & "b" channel.
6. Simply click on each of those channels to see the effect. Obviously you'll want the "Preview" checkbox selected. If you don't like the intensity of the color boast change the Opacity to whatever works for you. I typically set it somewhere between 50% - 75%.
7. Convert the image back to RGB mode.
8. If the blue's are still not strong enough for you then just use the a Hue & Saturation adjustment layer and tweak the Cyan and Blue until you get what you want.

Oh no...it'll give a color boast to all of the colors in the image. It seems to really bump up the greens and yellows too. Try it. It doesn't work for every image but for those it does, it's nice!

Lovely image Toney - and you're right, the 17-40 (to me at least) is better than the 17-55. Yes it lacks 2.8, yes it lacks IS, yes it lacks 15mm more length. It is hands down less versatile, but sometimes about the build/feel, color/contrast, and sharpness keep me coming back. It's all about the user experience really, and the 17-40 for me delivers. Whenever I am using my 17-55 (weddings, events) I always wish it was my 17-40. So, the 17-55 is going soon, and will probably be replaced with a 24, 35, or 50L to give me back some speed.

Here's my contribution... the 17-40 is a lens that is usually mounted on my 20D for landscape shoots... Occasionally I use it as a portrait lens too... Versatile enough, I must say, as long as you know how to squeeze out the best out of it...

hmmm for me...i would start with cropping the bottom up closer to the tires, crop out more of the left side.....try to diffuse/balance the bright light on the cars front left side. as far as the shot...perhaps shoot level with the top of the hood, just catching the sun on the cars right side above the back glass. also maybe shoot at around f4 or less to blurr out the big truck going by or f16 for more detail beyond the car. I am still much a novice so i could be misleading....

I honestly don't have a single bad thing to say about it. I shoot with a 16-35 (mkI) at work from time to time, and f/2.8 is really the only benefit it offers. The 17-40 has a more standard (and cheaper) filter size, and it's easily lighter than my 24-70. Aside from my old 100f/2,it's also the fastest-focusing lens I've ever owned. Are you using a 5D/1D? They're the cameras that this lens needs -- it would be very restricting on a 1.6 crop.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply - yes I am using 1DMK3. I think I am leaning more towards
the 17-40 as it would be a lens just for enjoyment of landscapes etc, not an earning lens or at least not in the direct sense.

Believe me, both 17-40 and 16-35L are excellent for landscapes, i can't say one is better than another, i got 16-35 because i need f2.8 sometimes as i do like nightshots and some lowlights i can't use a tripod maybe, so it is always nice to have f2.8 just in case, and if you want to see amazing shots of landscapes from 16-35L [another photographers] just tell me, but i am sure it is mostly because the price of 16-35L and maybe the weight [which is nothing more than 17-40] people go with 17-40.

First of all Tsmith, as many here on the forum, I love your landscape work. Stunning and fabulous.
I have one question regarding the picture above and the technique used. You set the aperture to f22. Do you find that with this lens, the images are still sharp then at 100%? I have a 10-22 lens (but will be going for a 17-40 when FF camera arrives) and there the F22 is unusable for me. At F8, I get the best camera sharpness, at F13 the best picture sharpness considering the DOF. But the camera sharpness is a non-issue for you when using the 17-40, or am I mistaken?
Thank in advance for you reply and for sharing these beautiful pictures!

Yes there is some loss in corner sharpness f/22 but its nothing to keep from using it at this aperture. Usually I'd used something around f/11 at the most for this type shot but wanted the water to appear smooth rather than waving as it actually was. So even at f/22 I still used a 3 stop ND filter. Overall still the sharpness and clarity is fine at f/22.

Yeah, I think you're right. The 5D + 24-105L would be the dream combo for me. What I meant was, you've already got the 17-40L, so why not keep it?
I know I sure would. But then again, a true 24mm, F4, w/3-stop IS is much more useful.

You will. 17-40 is very limiting on a 1.6 crop. If there's nothing wrong with your 10-20, why get rid of it?>
