Az, if you had to pick between your 24-70 and the 17-40, which would you choose and why?

He's also using them on fullframe where they have a vastly different field of view. His 24-70 will give him a fov similiar to 17-40 on a crop, only with F/2.8. when he uses the 17-40 on his 5D it's closer to using a lens like the 10-22 on your body.

I've owned both, still have the 17-40, and wouldn't mind having the 24-70 again. They are both great, and are very different lenses. I for one don't find 24mm nearly wide enough on a crop, but it's a good lens to pair up with a wider lens (like 17-40 or 10-22)

oh gosh !

I just got the 17-40 and I'm still learning to use it....but I have got some kick ass shots with the 24-70... I would stick to the 24-70...faster...beter & build...

ok I went through this thread and everyone keeps saying the 17-40 is not good for a 1.6 crop.... well I own a 1.6 crop... the 30D. I am trying to consider my frist L lens and really debating where to go...of course I looked at this...it is a bit cheaper...

I want to upgrade to a 5D but I don't see that happening for at least 1.5-2 years...

With that said...what would you L lens people suggest for a 30D.... ???? If this needs to be moved then so be it..

My 40D is a 1.6 crop and the 17-40L works great with it. The images are sharp and colorful. You can't go wrong with purchasing this lens if 17-40 is wide enough and long enough for you.

I want crisp images and my 10-20 sig don't give me that. I don't think i have a bad copy except it don't compare with the other lenses i have.

I dont use 10mm often but i agree its a fun lens. I am watching this thread in the hope that someone will say "go and get 17-40".

I will be going FF when the 5DII comes out? I like landscapes but fear that once i have got rid of my sig i wil regret it.

These images are great but i need that push to trade my sig:)

It really depends on what you are going to photograph.

If its portraits and you want the best L lens for it then it has to be 70-200mm 2.8 or to the other extreme landscape the 16-35mm 2.8 and both will be fine on a crop or FF camera.

should have mentioned that... I am really new to photography here.. But My progression seems to be towards portraits... I am really starting to enjoy shooting people in Portraits or enviroments... I want to end up with

5D
17-40 or 16-35 if I could $$$
24-70
and 70-200 L IS
I think these three and a teleconverter and I would be all set in the end... but as you can see I am not there...

oh and I love my 50mm f1.8 you can't beat that lens... I don't think at this point it is value added to upgrade.

If you are aiming to portraits I would focus on primes
50mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.8

They are not expensive and very good quality....just my 2 cents

The only way to better that is a 50mm L f1:2

I own a 50mm 1:8 myself and they are a great wee lens but I used the L version and it is a serious bit of kit. On the 50mm 1:2 thread most users prefer the 85mm L as it gives a more accurate focus as out of maybe 5-6 shots with the 50mm L you get one keeper.

Most of the wedding shooters use the 70-200mm 2:8 for their bridal portraits but these are all high end and pricy bits of glass.

I agree...my 85mm f/1.8 is sharp as a tack and nails the colors perfectly every time. For $350, give or take, you can't go wrong.

Now back to the purpose of this thread...the 17-40L is a great lens regardless of the body you put it on. Obviously image quality improves with full frame cameras so you are only improving your situation if you go with the 17-40L now and up grade to full frame later.

I was using 10-22 and 16-35 on 350D/30D when i was in Switzerland and Paris, so both were amazing performing with each body, i am sure 17-40L is a great lens for a crop body, i use my 24-105 many times for landscapes with my 5D which is close equivalent to 15-66mm.
Don't worry much about lenses, believe me from 10mm up to say 35mm this range is ideal for most landscapes [if talking about wide].

I have a 30D and have just purchased the 17-40 I find it quite wide enough. I think it would depend on just how wide you want to go. The 10-22 is a very specialised lens and I thought the 17-40 would serve me better in other areas

Got both of them and 85mm f1.8 is a real keeper for this. The focal length is best for this kind of shots. And the bokeh is quite good.

But now, let's have a look on 85mm f1.2 L. What a lense for portraiture things !

Thanks, thats much appreciated _ :D

Yes there is some loss in corner sharpness f/22 but its nothing to keep from using it at this aperture. Usually I'd used something around f/11 at the most for this type shot but wanted the water to appear smooth rather than waving as it actually was. So even at f/22 I still used a 3 stop ND filter. Overall still the sharpness and clarity is fine at f/22.

Super! Thanks for your reply!

quick question.........Can the 17-40 do the job of a 10-20/22 on a crop body or is the 10-20 still recommended for extra wide?

No, the 17-40 turns into a 27.2-64mm lens on a crop camera. You would need the 10-22 to cover the 16-35mm area.

This lens has found a near-permanent spot mounted on my 5D. I simply enjoy using it. My poor 24-70 has been neglected, but I think I may strap it on this weekend for some shooting down at the market.

Anyway, these were shot last night and this morning. Tell me what you think.

Thanks Tom! I shot this a few hours before the New Year's Fireworks were to begin. You're lucky you live in a nice close place to the city. I live near Palm Beach and it takes me 2 and a half hours to get to Sydney Uni each day. What a joke!

Thank you very much. They were hard to take becaues the De Young does not allow tripods and flash during some exhibits. Especially this one so I had to try to have an extra steady hand.

Definately would reccomend checking it out if its the same one!!!!!!! Great work. I honestly thought the exhibit would be somewhat of a disapointment but it totally blew me away.

I just got back from Vegas and while we were there we went to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. Unfortunately they were doing "Controlled Burns" at Zion so there was smoke everywhere and put a damper on the picture taking there.

With that said the first one is from Zion and the rest from Bryce each of which were shot with my 17-40L, RAW and processed with DPP.
