Two shots from the 17-40 merged. Can't really tell the image quality since there is a 100K limit but what you can see is the amount of distortion from this lens when it is wide open at 17mm. ;)

I just got this lens on Thursday and today the sun was finally out! Its been raing for the last 2 weeks. All I have to say is WOW, is this ever an awesome sharp lens. Although I don't get the size of the hood the sharpness is unbelievable! I can't wait to fully use this baby.
I think this lens will have me selling my Tokina 12-24mm and Canon 28-135 IS in no time flat as I can't see myself ever using them again. WOW oh WOW and looking at these images of what it can do? WOWzers.
Check these two photos out.

If you think the hood for the 17-40 is big, don't even consider the 24-70L. It's huge!
Lightstream
19th of June 2006 (Mon), 20:13
The 17's hood is wide, but not really deep. However the width does cause some issues - even the issued lens case that came with the 17 won't accomodate it with the hood on, or maybe I'm just not trying hard enough ;)
And the hood's hard to fit into my bag.. maybe I have to carry it hood-up and let it stick out over the top of the dividers. On the flipside, that'll mean the hood is already in the right position and ready to use immediately.
Crop camera users might be able to replace the standard 17-40 hood with something else that provides better shading..

Look at this blur at 40mm of a Porcelin Angel in Direct sunlight! Amazing! I've only had this thing for like a week and already I am in love with it!

MAN you all got some great shots...I however, am not feeling the love for my 17-40 yet. I am considering selling it for the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8. Are there some stops to avoid with this lens?? Is it touchy when it comes to focusing?? hmmmm

The 17-40's relatively short minimum focus distance allows one quite a lot of nice bokeh too, surprisingly. That plus its ability to pack a whole lot in the frame lets one get closer too, without cutting off too much othe subject.
As far as I know, the 17-40 can be shot wide open and still deliver consistent results across all apertures. I usually shoot mine at f/8 in bright sunlight outdoors anyway, but I have no qualms about using it at f/4. But if you can use the 17-55.. go for it. That's one magnificent lens with IS and huge aperture and everything I ever wanted. ;)

I am fairly new to the D-SLR world, and just joined here. I have been on dcresource forums for a while. Just curious, is there much banter in here about the 17-40 having some "bad" copy issues??

JMW, ive had the 17 - 40 L for a while, read a bunch of reviews, saw a bunch of shots, answered many queries regarding it's performance. Never heard anything bad about it.

Therein lies the problem...... ;)
I bought the 24-105 f/4L and this, and now I'm in trouble because other lenses don't deliver the mysterious L-factor (sharpness, punch, color straight out of the camera) that these two do. I could never put my finger on it and I never believed it but there really is something special that makes it hard for me to stop looking...

Thanks to everyone who posted. I think I want to buy this lens to compliment my 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6
I can't justify buying the 16-35mm which would be perfect fit.

Quick question for you all. I just bought this lens for my husband for christmas. I was told to look into a circular polarizer filter and am completely lost. What would be a good one for this lens as my husband shoots primarily flowers, portraits and landscapes.
Any help would be very appreciated.

The 17-40 takes a filter size of 77mm, so you'd be looking at circular polarizers of that diameter. For an additional step of complexity, you could look for a thin cut polarizer specially designed for wide angle lenses like the 17-40.

I'm no expert but surely there will be those who can distinguish the differences in brands and prices. As a rule, you get what you pay for. Popular brands are HOYA and Tiffen. And of course Heliopan or B+W, if you are willing to splurge

Ok I was looking at adorama and there are still a lot of options even if i narrow it down to just those 4 brands. One thing I noticed is that some just say circular polarizer glass filter while others say circular polarizer multi coated glass filter. Besides having more layers I would assume, what is the difference in the outcome with photos? Which would be better outdoors?

The Hoya Pro series cost as much as the B+W or Heliopan. Always go with multicoated as its design purpose is to control flare.

Here's what I use (http://www.adorama.com/SG77CPLEXW.html?searchinfo=sigma%2077mm%20polarize r&item_no=1) (Sigma AFG950) for my 17-40L and my 10-20 UWA. I have sold several landscape images taken with this filter. It is multicoated and threaded on the outer ring so that the lens cap can still be fitted on the lens. I have not had any issues with flare or other optical aberrations.

Any help would be very appreciated.Maybe he already has one. If he has any other lenses that have a filter size of 77. Wouldn't worry about it and let him buy the one he wants.

No ducks in tis one, but if you look closely you can just see a seal or three bobbing very close in. this was taken in grey ol Norfolk and there were squillions of seals both on the beach and right up close to the waters edge that day (but tose are different shots not with the 17mm ;-) )

not cheap but best to get either Hoya or B+W ( also available elsewhewre on that site - check the LHS navgigation for 'filters' -needs to be slimline double check that if you get the B+W but AFAIK the hoya digital 77mm one is slimline , if unsure ask the retailer. SLIMLINE is important becaue the very wide angle will show the edges of the filter otherwise
The reason I recommend the BEST CP filters (i.e. multicoated ones) is because althoug there is no guarantee this won't happen with them as well: I personally found that with e the cheap CP filters [I]if you convert to black and white (using thechannel mixer) you can get dreadful artifacts in the sky with cheap CP filters (I haven't had the chance to test it yet since getting better CP filters))

the same as any f4 lens, i.e. you'll need flash or a tripod if the shutter speed goes below 60th, maybe 30th at a push. If you mean does if pewrform well at f4 the answer is yes but better at 5.6 but not by a lot i.e.e f4 is very good

the camera will set the shutter speed if you are in AV or you can go into manual mode ( if there is one on the Xti -I dont know)
However indoors you will be likely to get camera shake from slow shutter speed unless you use a flash

Hi
yes the XTi have that option Manual mode .. so i could set both aperture and shutter speed when using the Manual Mode ? will this work on any lens. or any situations ? like low light condition.

The situation has no bearing on your ability to set the aperture and shutter speed.
You can always set them manually BUT what you would be best doing is LOTS and lots of experimenting in as many different lighting conditions as possible to see what effect changing the aperture and shutter speed has on getting the light reading right, because unless you get it right your pic will be either over or underexcposed, and that's not good.
Start by setting your camera to manual @ 100 ISO then choose an aperture of 5.6.
Take a reading of an evenly lit subject like the wall or door and move the shutter speed up and down until it shows a correct meter reading
Once you have got that, change the aperture and watch what happens tothe meter reading, it will change and so now you will have to reset the shutter speed, try that for every aperture on your lens reading the light on the same subject
Do it indoors , do it out doors, do it in daylight, do it at night
IF you do that you will have learned a LOT about exposure very quickly
have fun, even try taking shots at each setting, !
