Which of these two lenses should I get with a 10d, Canon 24-85mm or Sigma 15-30mm. The sigma suffers heavily from flare, but the canon's focal lenght is really only a 40-136mm which is ok, but a little too telephoto for me. I cannot make up my mind. And the ef16-35L is just too expensive. Help!!!!

How can you choose between these lenses? One is a wide-angle zoom, and the other is a mid-range zoom.
If you want the wide-angle view, then you don't have many choice. If 20 is wide enough, then the 20-35 USM is not flary and it's also cheaper even than the Sigma. The 35 end is a little longer than normal, so it's really a mid-range zoom on the 10D. If 20 isn't wide enough, then perhaps the 17-40/f4L is not too expensive for you. Or, perhaps you can get the 24-85 and then get a fixed ultra-wide, such as a 17.

17-40mm sounds good. What is the sharpness like? Price seems good for an L lens. Thanks

I don't own one but all reports have been favorable. It is a bit less expensive because it is not as fast and therefore didn't require as much of the special glass.

Here is a comparison between the above mentioned 16-35 and the 17-40 -->

I have the sigma 15-30 and quite happy with the results taken. I have not seen the flare problem you mentioned and find it extremly sharp even wide open with no vignetting. The effective range of 24-48 (on the 10D) covers most up close situations and is great for landscapes. Only negative I would say is lack of front end filter without use of lens hood (82mm filter).
The canon 24-85 (38-136) in my mind is an entirely different lens for a different use. I cover this with a 28-70L (bought used) so I have little overlap and then take further out with a 70-200 F4L.
Depends on your needs and shooting style. If your looking to build a lens collection look above. The canon 17-40 has good review but substantially more expensive then what I paid for the sigma.
good hunting.
