Local Chicago band, it was their CD release show. First time doing band photography.

Hi Nick,

I quite like numbers 3 and 4 but if it were me I would crop the shots so the singer takes up most of the frame - to me the rest of the stuff in the photos is useless.

I think number 1 could work too again with cropping in just on the singer.

What settings were you using? It looks like your shutter speed was a little slow for what you really need to get some really good shots. Also the shots of the bass player look a little noisy - I'd suggest a bit of post processing and number 6 would be better cropped I think - lose the crowd.

I think you probably needed to be shooting either 1600 or 3200 ISO for the lighting there and with your aperture wide open. Av setting f2.8. Failing that if you can get hold of a faster lens you will find the results will improve dramatically. I find the Canon 50mm f1.4 and Sigma 30mm f1.4 work really well.

A good first effort and I'm sure you'll improve with practice.

Here are the results with about 5 mins cropping/post processing.

A little soft, a little grainey, a little loose on the cropping (all the things Black Shadow pointed out) ... but I really like what you did with 'shutter dragging' and long exposures. I see you also captured the ubiquitous photo-phoner. :-)

Black, I went to your website and looked at a couple of sets of images ... one set was extremely grainey ... I looked at another set and and they were soft and a bit washed out ... since you are selling them I wondered if this was a way to downlevel the quality so no one would steal them? I have only recently taken to putting my logo on my images, although it is more to simply let people know where they came from than anything else as I can't really sell images of performers that I don't have a model release from.

Thanks guys! I'll talk to the band and see what they want done with them. They were all done pretty quickly seeing as that I wanted them to be done after the show, so I did them all last night.

Once sgain, thanks for the CC!

Nice shots - I really like the motion in the first one.

I agree with the comments regarding cropping, but think you've done pretty well - how free were you to move around? It looks like you were able to move pretty freely.

I had a media pass, so for the first 3 songs i was between the rail and the stage, so pretty freely, after that thet kicked us out so then i was in the crowd

Pretty cool shots showing a good grasp of technique but then I'm a fan of 'dragging the shutter'. I think the crops are cool and do add a dynamism to the pics, but the background images in the originals also lend more action to them. Look forward to seeing more of your work,
Roger.

I like the motion in the first one. Next time, I'ld try to use higher ISO (like 1600) to gat a bit more managable shuttertimes. You'll still get plenty of motion at 1/15, but it's more controllable that way (and the flash won't have to work so hard)
Also, when using one of your primes, you should be able to abandon the flash alltogether.
edit: Oops, I was looking at the wrong sig. You only have a zoom :o )
