I took a drive today in sunny Southern Illinois and saw a bald eagle sitting on a telephone pole. I quickly took out my S2 IS, zoomed all the way, and got this shot.

This may not seem that great to you professionals, but to this rank amateur, it was a thrilling moment.

I can see why it was a "thrilling moment". I've only been able to take images of these magnificent birds in captivity. Nice job! :D

Very nice pose Edd. The sky is quite grainy, which of course could be the magnification aspect of part of the whole image.

He has the statutory Bald Eagle evil stare... nicely captured on what you were working with.

I have stopped many a time at the roadside to try and get a raptor shot. Two problems exist. The obvious... the bird see's you and takes off. Secondly even with an SLR and larger lens, being underneath a pole like that causes havoc with perspective (tail out of focus because you are photographing the bird essentially from underneath). Not to mention the pole itself blocking much of the body.

Yer Cousin here thinks you did very well considering it was an inprompty photo taken at short notice with an all in one camera.

Just Cuz

Thanks All,

Cuz is right, I only got two "good" shots off, then he took off. I tried to folow him with the camera, but since it was zoomed to the max, the rest of the pictures turned out pretty bad. I will crop it and post one later today.

Well done on a nice shot, no matter how many raptors I see I still get excited when I see/find another one and I certainly never tire of looking at other peoples images of them either. Many thanks for sharing with us.

Great capture, Warning, photographing these Raptors can be extremely Addictive. There are people(such as myself) That are constantly on the lookout for these guys, you were lucky, i spotted one the other day, pulled over, got my camera out and he was gone.:D :D :D :D

As promised, here is another picture just after he took off. Of course, it blurred, and the power line is bothersome.

I would really appreciate anyone who could like to touch this up for me with some of your fancy software.

Thanks.

About the best I could do with this seeing as I am as sick as a dog. Kinda a hard one to tackle anyhow at least for me.

And people wonder why I always leave the house with my A95!! A camera is no good sitting at home with no one to operate it. I have carried a camcorder in the car for 17 years and now I add the digital still camera. It's just got to be with you!! Nice work!!!

I tried to work on the second picture some and just gave up and let my puny photo program turn it into a painting. Not bad!

Well, as long as it's open season on eagles, here's my spin on #2. :D (great shots btw, love my S2 too)

Great shots especially for your first eagle! I'd be thrilled too! There's nothing quite like the first Bald Eagle sighting. It is in fact what got me hardcore into birding!
