Hello

Newbie Alert :)

I bought a S2 IS a few weeks back and havent had alot of time to play around with it but on the some of the first lot of photo's I have noticed a rainbow effect happening on some of the shots, this one in perticular
http://www.martyh.com/temp/rainbow_effect.jpg

is this normal for this type of camera with so much optical zoom or a flaw?
Im unhappy about but dont know if its just something I have to put up with or worth taking up with Canon Australia

EXIF data if that helps

I could only see something in the inset picture- and it looks like purple fringe to me.
I get this when I try to shoot Canada Geese - the white part around their neck gets this blueish-purple tone, next to the black.
From what I've read, it can be removed in Photoshop, although I don't know how (yet). Sometimes I can reduce it by changing my position relative to the subject and the light source.
It seems to be a problem with most digicams when using full telephoto extension, an dis more pronounced in some makes and models than others. The S2 is supposed to be an improvement over the S1 in this regard, and both are supposed to be better than other make cameras.
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable than I will have a more complete answer for you.

Yes, that's purple finging. Nothing to worry about, that's normal, although quite annoying. I found it in my 350D, and I saw it even in the most expensive pro cameras. It's a digital sensor 'disease', not found in film cameras, and it's there since they introduced the per-pixel microlenses. Nobody is clear what actually is going on there. A common speculation (wich seems to have some logic to me, so far) would be that light is bounced off of those microlenses and scattered towards neighbouring photosites when light falls at lower angle.

It is accentuated by :

1. Short focal lenghts
2. Wide apertures
3. Very contrasted subjects positioned toward the margins of the frame.

Use the opposite of these three points as you can when dealing with very contrasted subjects.
I don't know nothing about how to PP it either, as it doesn't bothered me that much yet.

Is this chromatic aberration ?, sort of like clashing colours mixing together ...

Sort of CA.
