I may have a chance to get a 400 canon telephoto lens. Its older (not sure how old yet), manual focus only.

Will this work on a D30? Will it hurt anything to try it on the D30 to see if it will work?

A Canon lens won't work with a Nikon camera, and if it has manual focus it could be FD lens, that type of lenses don't even work with the new Canon EOS camera's.

But if you buy your 400mm telephoto lens, you can buy a adapter, from Canon EF to Nikon.
And you can even put a Canon FD lens on a Nikon; FD to EOS adapter - EOS to Nikon adapter.

Given that the post was made nearly ten years ago, that seems unlikely. Also, the camera being discussed was almost certainly the Canon D30.
