I'm having trouble getting my Canon S30 recognized by XP Pro. I have installed the WIA driver as the Canon website suggests.
When I attach the camera via the USB port, I get that new hardware attached beep and a window pops up, entitled PowerShot S30, which says "Select the program to launch for this action:". Unfortunately there are no programs listed on OK is grayed out, so I must hit cancel.
If I try to fire up the Scanner and Camera Wizard manually, I get the following message: "The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and properly connected to the computer."
If, however, I go to Scanners and Cameras in the Control Panel I can see "PowerShot S30 #2" listed. Here are the mysterious things it does, though: if I try to rename it "Powershot S30," it tells me that "A device with the name you specified already exists," even though it is not visible (and I don't have another camera). Moreover, if I click view device porperties, under "Camera Properties" every value is reported as "(not available)" and after "Description" and "Manufactured by" are simply blank spaces. Clicking "Test camera" gets the following error: "The test failed because the device is not available."
Incidentally, there is some functional interface going on, because I do get the "the camera has powered down because it has not been accessed for a long peroid" messages, and it does dutifully power down at the same time.
Finally, the ZoomBrowser aslo doesn't work; when it tries to access the camera, "CameraWindowComp.exe" causes an illegal exception error.
The only think I know I did wrong in setting this thing up was installing a TWAIN driver, but I uninstalled it before installing the WIA driver. What's strange is that this camera worked fine with this computer quite recently, but when I swapped out the hard drive, reinstalled windows, and then tried to use the camera again, I got this problem.
Canon claims the problem is with the computer manufacturer, which strikes me as improbable.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Neil
