Will a 4GB SD card work in a S2? I can't find if it supports FAT32.

No indication that I can find in the Owner's Manual or online (so far) as to how large a card the S2 will take. I use a 1 Gig card OK in mine. A card reader plugged into a Windows XP PC reads it as FAT, but not FAT32... don't know if that's iron-clad, however.

The S2 IS does support FAT32, so a 4GB card should be fine.

I beleive that SD in general as a memory option is new enough that FAT32 was bui,t in from day one. CF cards go back so far there are 1MB CF cards out there.. (that's ONE Megabyte :) )

Needless to say back when an 8MB CF card was considered gigantic,. I don't think any one had Fat32 in mind :) ;)

Now that I mention that... I am ready to wager that the original CF card interface and design is one of the storage mediums that has seen the largest increase in speed and capacity without need to radically redisign in history? Yes? No?

well...its based on IDE, has an intergrated controller, and by design has the potential to go at many times the speed of SD etc, simply because it has more pins.

it has been suggested to me that several small capacity cards might be better - failure or loss of 1 doesn't wipe you out. I use 2 at 1 gb. Price was equal or less than a 2gb card.
Having just one 4gb would worry me

When you shoot video 4gb will seem pretty small.:D

I agree in multip[le cards.. so if budget menas a specific capacity,. definately divide the budgeted capacity into two cards. Much more flexibility.

But don't think about size of basket,. only the number of baskets. IE: 2 4GB cards are 4 times better than 2 1GB cards. :) Simple math :)

I'd also argue that 2 4GB cards is a lot easier to work wioth than 8 1GB cards :)

I'm a new S2 owner. The only mention of the memory capacity in the manual is on page 64, where in the context of "Shooting a movie", it says, "The maximum recording capacity is 1 GB." Perhaps this only applies to movies? But I bought a 1GB card to make sure it wasn't too large. Someone ought to question Canon before we buy a lot of 2-4GB cards that won't work.

I just got a reply from Canon and they said it could handle up to 2048GB! There was no mention of FAT32 or anything but I am sure it is if it can handle 2048GB.

Maybe they meant 2048MB = 2.048GB. Unless you can attach a hard drive, I don't know of any flash memory devices that hold that much.

The 1 GB limit mentioned here is for a single video file. You could put more video clips on a larger card, but not clips longer (bigger) than 1 GB each.

That's correctly said. In the S2 IS you can place cards of 4 Gb with no problem.

Good luck.
