Here is one of my favs. I call it "Who's Railroad is it?" because it is has units from 3 of US and Canada's 6 Class 1 railroads. It was also a chance we took to shot this. We herd this guy coming while we were setting up our shot for the UP2001. We took the chance and cought this guy outside Rochelle, IL.. We ended up missing the 2001 that day, but this shot was well worth it. Needless to say I cought the 2001 a few months later sitting in a yard a nice sunny summer day.

I was about 7 or 8 feet away from the rails. I almost always stay 5 feet or more away, unless I'm positive that its clear. Of course, on a curve, there is no "positive". I used the 70-200 telephoto zoom in that shot so it may appear that I'm closer than I actually am.

BTW, I like the scenario of the Amtrak shot. I don't quite miss my northern Ohio winters, but I do like to see snowy images on occasion. :)

River Adur - Shoreham - November 2005

Don't have any real favourites yet - but I like this one. 20D only one month old at the time so still gettiing used to it together with the Sigma 18-125.
As a result of this outing the Sigma was returned to dealer as it was extremely soft between 18-45mm. Replacement (direct from Sigma) a lot better.

Okay, this is certainly not my best, but it is actually one of my favorites. It was the first shot I ever took with an L lens. I had just been to the camera store and borrowed a used 400 f/5.6L that I was considering buying. I went to my favorite spot, and this group of helpers was heading east to pick up a westbound train in Thousand Palms.

That's called a Beyer-Garrett, and they ran a lot of them in Africa. I don't know why the design didn't catch on in the US since it was a great way to get the locomotive's weight over the driving wheels.

Great shot.

In fact, these are all really wonderful. Thanks, everyone.

That's a cool shot too. Wasn't that ACL paint? I don't know why but I like the high nose GP-9's. Did you happen to notice if it was passenger or freight? It almost looks like a heat exhaust on the top of the nose hood.

tellysurv

This engine is actaully a GP18 that used to belong to the Norfolk & Western RR. After that it went to the Waccamaw Coast Line in Conway, SC. That's where the ACL looking paint came from. The WCL paint strongly resembled ACL purple.
This engine and the passenger cars behind it all belong to the current shortline, Carolina Southern RR.
This particular photo was taken close to Christmas in 2004 and this was a special Christmas party excursion. It had just came back to the depot to tie down for the night, but from the looks of it, the party still rages on inside.

if you look close on the long hood, you can see the NW letters peeking through the paint right under the dynamic blisters...

This is known as the Coopersville & Marne Railroad. It's a small line that runs between the two towns on about a six mile stretch of track. Coopersville has a population of about 3900, while Marne is probably around 250, so I really have NO idea what they would be taking from one town to the other in these boxcars. I think they just wanted an excuse to drive the train on this beautiful sunny morning.

Small town freight train at its finest!

Wow! They definitely keep it looking new. Thanks for the info. The railroad is their pride in this small town, so I don't think there is any shortage of volunteers to keep things in good shape.

However, they DO need some work on this old rust bucket. It's been sitting in the same spot for quite some time, but I'm sure the good people of Coopersville will get this baby looking good before too long.

Went for a ride on the Swanage Railway in Dorset (UK) today, I was quite pleased with this one, although I wish the grey 'box' in the bottom LH corner wasn't there.

This is ex British Railways class 4MT 2-6-4 No. 80078 running round it's coaches at Norden, near Corfe Castle.

Thanks Belmondo, Yes I must admit that when I saw it I thought 'Yes!'
I think the highlights on top the loco are a little 'burnt out', but the whole scene seems to work, for me at least.

I had such an enjoyable day out yesterday, and decided I needed a bit more 'reach' on my 28-105 so have just ordered the Canon 24-105L IS this morning - It should be here tomorrow :-) Not sure what to do with the 28-105 now though...

Nice shot! I agree with belmondo...although I might be tempted to photoshop the gray box out (or crop the photo tighter). However, it's all a part of the RR scene, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Belmondo

They only problem with the grey box is that it's an electrical equipment cabinet, and that tends to tip off the era of the photo. Still, it's a wonderful shot, and I wouldn't worry about the blow-out highlights onthe top of the engine. There's no important detail lost, and it can be argued that it adds to the image.

kevin_c

J T - Thanks for you comments and the offer of taking my old lens off my hands - very generous of you :-)
I'll more than likely keep it for travelling 'light' (holidays etc.) the 24-105 will be a bit heavier! (I also take the grip off my 20D when i am on holiday)

Belmondo - my thoughts about the cabinet as well - it does give the game away about the era...

Had to do a quick climb up the side of a snow covered hill of a highway overpass to get this one today. I fell and slipped halfway down the hill on my ass after getting the photo. The whole time I had my arm extended all the way up to protect the camera. Fortunately no one was around, or else they would have had a good laugh.

There was a strong late afternoon sun hitting this east bounder today. I sure wish this would have been heading west instead. Oh well, can't always have the perfect lighting.

Orgnoi1:
Those are great shots. The b&w image could easily have been taken in the 1940s or 50s (except for the plastic trash can and vending machine:lol:).

Just a reminder, though. There is an 800 pixel limit on posted images---that is, 800 pixels on the longest side. If you want to share images larger than that, you will have to be satisfied with just posting links to them.

I'll leave yours here to give you a little time to make the change.

Thanks,

Tom

"Forgotten Steel"

These shots were taken at various locations depicting (IMO) a total waste of our railroading history. Everything you see is salvagable and my firsthand knowledge is that they have been inquired about, but will not be moved to places that will give the TLC needed to bring them back to operation.

You are very correct it is. I took a shot of the plate on the side and it says.

"Beyer, Peacock & Co Ltd. Manchester 1926. H.W. Garrett's Patent No17165 - 1907."

I always thought the design made a great deal of sense. I'm not sure why they never caught on in America.

VisualOddity... your shots are really nice... I love B&W for trains... the only thing I would work on either with PS or during the shot... is to try and keep your horizontal and vertical axis level with points on the pictures... its hard with trains... but something to try out...

Yeah, not by choice. Still haven't figured out how to keep that data when saving for web in CS2. Needless to say that it wasn't shot in raw and I don't happen to have the original here with me. I'll have to find it on the disk at home.
