I haven't bought a new tripod in years. After a doctor's visit in Orlando this afternoon I stopped in a camera shop that deals mostly with used gear. I found a Bogen 3246 tripod and began looking it over. It looked, except for a couple of minor scratches, new, and I mean NEW. Everything worked just fine. Now I already have a decent tripod but it's not like this thing. I asked "how much" and was told $125. I countered with $100 and the guy took it. It even has the additional cost Bogen carrying strap. I'll use the Slik Pro Ballhead I have been using. I know it weight a bit over 9 lbs. but I'm not going to haul it around except in a car or truck. I have a good monopod if I need something lighter. This is about the most stable tripod I have ever delt with. Just had to brag a bit.

I have a similar tripod, the 3040, which is probably the earlier version of yours. It is my heaviest tripod but the most stable. You gotta love that twin shark leg design and bubble levels! The only problem I have with it is that the head is stuck and I can't unscrew it.

...the head is stuck and I can't unscrew it.

I don't know if this helps but there are three screws under the mounting plate that are used to futher keep the head from unscrewing. Perhaps these need to be backed out a bit?

I backed off the screws before and it still didn't budge. Last night I took the screws out and sprayed some WD-40 inside, and this morning I was able to unscrew the head :) Boy am I happy.
