thank you all very much for entering
I really liked all the pictures very much,
I mean that sincerely

I have found it very hard to pick the top three
they are all so different and very interesting
the photographs are wonderful

Winners list is further down...

JLacoy82
'Behind Bars'

the detail is marvellous . the shadows below in the water,
the look of the stonework and the shape ,
it was as though looking through a window .
at 1/10 .... you have a steady hand
I imagine the shot was hand held
lovely shot

Andrewaaa5
'Gost3634-61nzlmz 1966 Tallinn 2003'

another beauty
the coloured stone work design all around the shore cover is really lovely
very nice

note re rules
photograph size was discussed in a PM to Andrew
as the picture measurements {479x638 } was not in keeping with the rules

Alan220
'Rusty'

another design I loved
the artistic shapes, squares and triangles and the bigger square surrounding the patterns
loved the beautiful colours

Rpolitsr

'camouflage'

that is a lovely well worn cover which seems embedded into the ground
there is something about the stones and cement around the manhole cover which has a look of being baked with beautiful strong sunshine over many years
the man's leg walking over it gives a great touch to the picture
I liked it very much

In Japan

'Hiroshima City'

what a beautiful design on the cover showing a symbol of a special city
I love the bicycle turning slowly into the alley or side street
it looks darker there so it could be the entrance to an underground/ railway or some kind of transport station
love the cars and atmosphere in the overall shot.
beautiful shore cover

Boutty
' Need Rain'

another beautiful cover
the design of the road's bricks , the car seemly heading towards you and the sunshine . all show the cover so well at that angle and the 'slats' look as though they were 'gold bars'

Maureen
' Presidential Cover at the Ronald Regan Library '

the rustic and beautiful design and colours are gorgeous
even though this cover is not actually on the street right now it is a pleasure to see
I love everything about the patterns showing , especially the rustic aged look

BottomBracket

'Just walk on by'

was looking forward to seeing one of those wonderful shores all around New York
but I know there are very heavy snowfalls over there right now.
so thanks
I guess we are lucky to see this lovely cover at all.
it tells a great story re 'New York' and 'Made in India'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congratulations to the winners
# 1
In Japan
'Hiroshima City'
# 2
Boutty
'Need Rain'
# 3
BottomBracket
'Just walk on by'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

as I said. maybe so boring to repeat , but I loved them all
the designs and patterns and the aged look
the rustic appearance and where there are reflections
also the street scenes going on around and about some of the covers

thank you all very much
I appreciate all the entries
to me they all are just terrific and beautiful

Congratulations all , especially to the winning entry

POTN G- series Challenge # 53
' Street Man Hole Covers '

Hi all
:lol:

sorry about that
just a little hitch
but all is well now

re the challenge subject

I was thinking how much goes on underground
and having always to avoid the manhole and 'shore' covers etc ,
avoiding them in case I am thrown off the bicycle

but looking at them up close :rolleyes: some of them are very interesting and quite attractive
with details of firms ( some long gone) etc, or local councils

I would like clear good impressions of what they are all about , and as they appear on the ground
it can be any type of manhole according to what your country deems to be the perfect cover for what is going on under there
:lol:

thank you very much.
I appreciate you all entering if possible and look forward to seeing some great entries of an everyday 'taken for granted ' subject

if we had not those covers we would fall into a hole
:lol:

sorry the time is much shorter
but at least the manholes won't be going anywhere:lol:

Very Best of Luck
and hope you have fun
(but don't get arrested);)

Hi all!

I couldn't take part to this challenge, because I didn't find any cover pictures from my archives :cry: .

And I did go out and after hard digging found something (cover 1) :o

There was an old photo taken with S20, but that is forbidden on this forum... but I'll post that photo still for your pleasure :D (cover2) .

Regards,

Markku

Congrats to in japan, Boutty and Bottom Bracket. They were terrific entries and I would have judged them about the same as marie. Very interesting topic.

Just FYI, marie.... mine was on the street along side the library but I chose to zoom in on it's pattern for the entry. Sorry I did not make that clearer in my title. :(

Well done everyone and congratulations to both of my co-winners - in Japan and BottomBracket. I must admit I coud imagine in Japan's photo being hung in one of Hiroshima town hall's walls! ;) I also enjoy looking the fascinating manholes of everyone!

[COLOR=Green][COLOR=DarkGreen][B][FONT=Garamond][SIZE=4]
look forward to seeing some great entries of an everyday 'taken for granted ' subject

My hat's down for you Marie for doing a great job! Not only did you pick a very challenging subject; don't know how many of us have a photo of manhoes in our dusty hard drives?, and the fine job of commenting on each of our photos.(as usually you would anyway) Thank you for the lovely second place Marie! :p

As for my photo, I need to drive a few kilometres into older part of Melbourne city to spot one or two on Sunday evening. AWA stands for 'Australian Water Association'; the manhoe is there probably for sewerage or drinking water supply. Before I went out and shoot for the challenge, I found these interesting articles on the net. Many more beauties (http://www.eps.vic.edu.au/japan/cover.htm), Hot items (http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/04/19/1082357114910.html). Don't you love the net! :lol:

7th to 13th of February 2005 : First speed challenge.

Week 53.

This was the first challenge of the second year of the POTN speed challenges.
Congratulations to the winners and to all the participants.
As Maureen, I felt that in Japan, Boutty and BottomBracket were clearly the top three, and they were also frequent winners during the first year.

A nice beginning for the second year!

marie, you started the second year with an interesting theme (I knew what to shot after consulting the dictionary and the wikipedia, of course).

As usual, I enjoyed your comments. Thank you.

As a curiosity, the clever automated ‘sponsored links’ at the beginning of this thread pointed to ‘Manhole Cover Lifters’ :) where you can find tools like the one below:

Lovely entries : )
I know my pics are the incorrect size. They always are. The reason being is that I do not want to win any prizes (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), so I enter the wrong size picture so everyone can see my work, but so that I have no chance of winning : ))

Sorry for all the hassles that it always causes : (

Can you believe that I actually have a photo of a manhole cover!?? I do not have my G3 any more, my GirlFriend has it, and she is in temporarily UK and I am in boring Sweden, so I have to enter old photos from my HD, and cannot take new photos for posting.. that is my excuse : ))
Take care,
andrew

oh, and I have attached the other pic that I was going to use your your, erm, enjoyment :? - and it is the corrct size : ) but the jpeg compression is awful..
the pic iteslf is very 'camoflaged' and you cannot see much of what is happening in it, in my opinion...

Just FYI, marie.... mine was on the street along side the library but I chose to zoom in on it's pattern for the entry. Sorry I did not make that clearer in my title. :(

I was sure it was in the library museum there (from your title) Maureen
and I was wondering was it special, regards something Ronald Reagan had touched or moved for reasons known only to those who were around at the time, or to whoever visited the library.

sounds a bit crazy now that you have explained, but no matter
it is a beautiful design and the close details are very well photographed

it's like a wonderful intricate cobweb immortalized forever in that gorgeous metal

whether a picture is chosen in the top three, or not , I guess there is a lesson to be learned by us all here.........
the title has to (almost) always give the best description and direction to where our photographs are to lead the 'judges'

much as I really loved every one of the entries I would have chosen the ones I did as winners, for a few 'extra' reasons ,
but it took an awful lot of thinking and deciding at the time

many thanks

I was looking up what LACDPW meant on the manhole you shot
but didn't see it and will leave it for now
(I guess LA is for Los Angeles and C for City , then maybe 'dept public works ' :confused:
not sure of the rest)
(http://www.sewerhistory.org/grfx/components/mholes1.htm)

(http://www.sewerhistory.org/grfx/components/mholes1.htm)http://www.sewerhistory.org/grfx/components/mholes1.htm

In the very early collection systems (especially for "separate" sanitary sewage systems), narrow lamp-holes were installed for visual inspections of sewers, but it soon became clear that they were almost useless as a maintenance access point. Manholes corrected this problem, providing access to the sewers for inspection and cleaning. A second purpose of manholes was to serve as points of ventilation for the gravity sewers. (It was recognized early on that sewers need to "breathe.")
There are many types of manholes used at one time in the sewer system, including drop manholes, wellholes, and "flight" sewers. Many of these designs can be seen below.
See Tracking Down the Roots of Our Sanitary Sewers (http://www.sewerhistory.org/chronos/convey.htm) for more information.

I really liked the 'AWA' but I thought the W was an M for Melbourne
(if looking at the cover on the street from the other direction)
and I thought (for a second):p that the two A's were a way of expressing Australia upside down
as over here Australia is down under
so I just thought for a second (or two):lol: :p
that it was a way of expressing the upside down A
:confused:

seems I was looking at the M upside down :eyes

Wow! Thanks a lot for the top spot, Marie! And congratulations to BottomBracket and Boutty on their 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

Marie, I must admit that I thought you were crazy when I saw that you had chosen man hole covers as the topic. Of course that all changed when I began looking at the covers in Hiroshima. You are quite right, they do vary quite a lot and warrant more recognition. Thanks for opening my eyes.

Well, it's Valentine's Day and my wife's patience is wearing thin, so I had better continue this tomorrow morning. Thanks again, Marie, for hosting such an interesting challenge. I'll post more comments along with the next challenge tomorrow.
Have a nice V-Day,

No worries marie..... I just wanted you to know that I took the photo at the library but it was on the street (and that I followed the instructions :) ). I voted "No comments" with the photos so it is my own fault that the title was confusing.
The best thing is that I didn't think I could take a decent manhole cover photo and I was pleased with what I was able to produce. Thanks for that challenge, marie.

BTW, LACDPW stands for 'Los Angeles County Dept. of Power and Water'. :):)

thank you very much Maureen
I voted for no comments too
I still think it's best that way as the title can say a lot
and anything else (before voting ) can be a bit too much at times as the picture should tell it's own story in many (and various) :lol: ways

am thinking of my own when the smilie came in there:lol:
my titles don't always match but come with what I want the picture to appear as..
in other words whats in my head at the time

:lol:

and thanks too for explaining LACDPW
it's real nice to know and to see these pictures
I really enjoyed them all

excuse all the smilies

Congratulations to In Japan and Boutty for being in the winner's circle! I enjoyed all the entries - they all kinda looked the same, but with subtle differences in interpretation. Thanks Marie for letting us go out and think about this shot, great job hosting, especially on short notice.

About the issue on image size, I feel strongly that everyone should abide by the rules. I could understand that newbies can get it wrong during the first couple of tries, but to do so willingly time and again somehow diminishes the spirit of the challenge. If one would like to share a photo that adheres to the theme, but somehow does not conform to the rules (wrong size, different camera, etc) one can post it after the challenge is over. This, I believe, is good form.

I agree with all you say

in a PM (last week) to Andrew I as much as said all that to him
I said it really made asses of us all
(when he said the same thing as he said above here)

I didn't want to repeat myself to him when he replied on the forum yesterday
as I did not want to discourage him by me saying it over and over
(about what he said regards the pictures he enters)

but I wanted to say it to let others know that I had notified Andrew
that what he said was certainly not a fair reason to enter

so Andrew knows and knew from when I notified him ,as soon as he posted his entry
I asked him to change the size and that (above) was his reason for not doing it

he is keen to enter the challenges, so for now I left it rather then have bad feeling and going away forever

but for him to think about it all more

*****
for everyone,
in future , and for sure................

* no photos: except they conform strictly to the rules *

and please think a little more about the people who are having to notify regarding these 'mishaps'

thanks all

( just for your peace of mind
this is part of the message I sent to Andrew when he replied to my initial request in a PM to him, about the measurements of his entry

all before the challenge closed :

to Andrew

" I can understand what you are saying about the size
but as the challenge is taken a bit more serious it would not do to just add pictures for the reasons you say

I would appreciate it if you explain after the winner is announced as everyone knows the size rules
it is not really fair to everyone else
looks as though I just ignored the rules for certain shots.
kindof makes an ass out of us allhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
you can leave it on for now
(better still, put the right measurements)

no worries (this time)
if you explain about it later

but please enter again (in other comps.)
with the right measurements though

hope you'll keep entering with further comps.
never mind about the winning
I was the very same
but I never thought of the reasons you did to avoid it http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_evil.gif
maybe because I never thought I would win
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I did enter the wrong measurements once, by mistake, as I never realised a picture entered had to be exactly 640 pixels on the longest side

I was glad to be told as I really had not noticed all the small details of the rules
and if someone had gone to the trouble of setting them up , well it was only right that we all appreciated what it was and is about.
not just the shots but all the other things which it takes when entering "

that was the PM I sent Andrew after I received his initial reply

andrewaaa5
15th of February 2006 (Wed), 07:14

Most of the important thoughts about intentionally uploading a wrong sized picture to the POTN challenges have been posted by BottomBracket and marie. I join to them.

The members willing to show their pictures without entering the contest can post them in the ’Photo Sharing’ section
