I am a little confused why people add the battery grip to a camera?
I have a 300D and it is near impossible to run the battery down in one day.
I have a spare if that happens. Does it help balance with heavier lenses?

Yes according to most it gives a better feel. It also has extra buttons for shooting in portrait/vertical mode. Battery capacity doubles when using two batteries.

I like the way it feels. I've got big hands, and it's nice to have more to hang on to.

As for running down the battery, I've run down three in a day with my 300D...

The balance and the extra buttons are great. But for me there is an extra plus there are many times that I am away in the woods for days and cannot get power. This makes sure that I do have the power that I need. There was a time last year that I was out for 9 days and took over 2000 pictures. The grip kept me with all the power that I needed. This also meant that I did no have an extra battery flaoting around that I ahd to worry about it was there ready to use.

I have the grip for my Rebel T2, but not for my 20D. The T2 is so small in my hand I almost needed it. The 20D is not so bad... but I will probably still get one eventually.

The one time I went through three batteries, I was shooting a music festival; this was last summer.

I haven't even come close to draining the batteries on the 20D. I did two shoots on Saturday, took almost a thousand pictures, and didn't need to go for a fresh battery...

With a bigish lens such as the 100-400LIS I find using the camera with the grip fitted gives better balance and handeling properties. Battery power is drained much quicker using IS lenses and the extra battery is a god send for me.

I have the BG-ED3 for my 10D and love it. It balances the camera, helps with vertical shooting and fits far more comfortably in my hand. I find the extra battery life very handy too as before now i have easily gone through two grips worth (four batteries) in a day.

doesnt seem like you have many big lenses. i mostly use my camera as is and bring a battery along too but if i know im gonna do headshots then the grip makes a world of a comfort difference (even with a small 50mm) for portrait type shots. was well worth the $80 or whatever i paid for it, even though it has seen little use.

plus if you mount the camera on a tripod, its just much easier to have two batteries already in it on a long day of shooting.

i have yet to see one person here that wont advocate getting a grip (no pun intended =p)

I can't agree with you more on this! I love the extra bottons available with the grip, I use it on my 20D. With two batteries I don't have to worry for a full day of shooting.

Check out the Canon web site there seems to be a recall on the grip, my grip sometimes does not give an accurate ready of images remaining on card and battery level. Anyone else notice this?

BUT, I still LOVE my 20D and recommend it!

Cheers!

Why? Size, balance & portait mode. My 20D is too small in my hands--can't even imagine trying to use the 350D! I shoot in portait orientation a lot, so it helps prevent cramped shoulders at the end of a multi-hour shoot. The extra battery capacity is a nice bonus.
