Hey Folks:
My D30 is on the way! I was sitting in my living room yesterday with my eye on the doorstep....come on FEDEX!

I have to say I'm a wee bit intimidated by all this digital darkroom stuff. Very challenging.

I wanted to post some of my ideas for serving my clients that I've been thinking about with the new D30....and see how you folks serve your clients.

I shoot actors/models/families. Portraiture.

I usually provide a contact sheet with each roll of 36 shot...b/w or color.

How to do this in D30ville, without spending hours at the computer.

Does the breezy browser do a high quality contact sheet?

What about giving the client a choice of "hard copy" contact sheet, or an online one?
(one would be included, if they wanted both....an additional charge for the extra one)

Can you use actions to take 36 raw pics in a directory and develop them and save two versions....
a smaller thumbnail for the online contact sheet in one directory, and a larger version as if the client
"louped" the pic online in a second directory? I would also want to put a copyright symbol on the larger version
for security sake. ????

What about selling the client the "digital negatives"?

Selling the client the online contact sheet on CD?

Other services you provide in the digital realm.....without spending 10 minutes on each frame shot.

Ideas?

Thanks!
Jon Simpson

Hey:
I ordered from B&H of N.Y. http://www.bhphotovideo.com

They didn't have the lowest price....but a lot of folks had said that the places with the lowest price
wait until they have all your credit card info and then inform you it's the Grey Market price
(and no 1gig/battery offer). And they don't include the 1yr Canon Warrantee...just 30days.
And......shipping is $100 or so. So..I got it for.....$2,299. I've ordered lots of stuff from B&H with no problem.

I've also had no problem with http://www.cameraworld.com .

I should get the camera by Monday. I opted for the standard shipping.

Hot dog!
Jon

Here in Seattle, Kenmore cameras has been selling the d30 for $2499. full kit. I think they mail order also.... Kcamera.com.. So I was able to get mine last week by stopping at the store. As much as I like mail order, there's nothing like having your new camera handed to you as you pay for it. Only wait I had was getting home and charging the battery. I eagerly await my microdrive though.
On the thought of proof sheets, Photoshop 6 has a proof sheet option under the automation command. with it you can print thumbnails of all the images in the specified directory, then you can print it for your clients. It also has a simple web display generator too. I use it quite a bit on my web site.

For Canon EOS owners the D30 must surely be a very attractive way into the digital realm, Canon have been very careful, they know that many long term customers will buy D30's, and that's why although beta cameras have been around for a while there's been a long delay for full production units to appear. It's got to be just right.

Ok, I freaked out a bit when I saw someone ordering a new D30 and for $2500 to boot. So, I wondered what the heck, had Canon snuck in a new camera on me and called it the D30 reusing an older camera model number. So I went to B&H and tried to look it up but to no avail. Then I went back to the thread and noticed the last posting was from December 2001 and it really was the D30 being talked about. :):) Nice techno-archeological dig galin. A walk down memory lane. :):):)
