Okay, I made up my mind and got the 24-70L for my new wedding and events lens. If ever I need a longer lens, I'll just take out my 85 1.8, which is my favorite right now. I am going to be taking portraits of some 70 women from my church soon for a "get to know you" poster. I will use my portrait lenses for those, but I have so many events coming up, I need something really great. So much money. I may have to stop eating out for about 4 months. :( But I'll have my new lens :)

Bummer. But I'm not upset. We're just having a huge NorEaster (big snow storm) starting this evening. I'll probably take the 10D outside and take a few pictures of the kids playing in the snow. It's about time!

I know, it is about time. I can't believe winter has just arrived in February. It has been cold here all week and we had flurries yesterday. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold, cold, cold.

It's in Laurel, MD. Do they deliver UPS on Sat.? I can't recall.Like Mike said - that costs extra. You might be able to pay them a visit and pick it up in person, if the storm does its usual Washington thing and fizzles.

I'm not that desperate or brave. :) But it is really annoying that I can't have my toy until Monday! It's okay, I'll live. Tomorrow I will take out my 50 1.4 for the great snow scene. Let's make a thread for that, Jon. Winter in D.C. - rare, but really slippery.

If it happens I'll be out with 2-3 lenses and either dogs or skis depending on the depth (both bodies goes without saying).

OOOO, skis. I actually have a pair for everyone here. What are the chances? Think we'll have school Monday?

Snowing already. Should be a nice storm, guys. Let's post our Winter Storm pictures on another thread, what do you say?

:( I can't play... Our winter storm's usually mean that it might freeze.
I have always thought that it would be cool to shoot upward and snag a snowflake coming down... probably a difficult but rewarding shot... But I have a shortage of the subject here :)

Nothing here, just drizzle - you're a bit further west though.

Snow to start this evening apparently. I looked at the weather bug and it is coming later. But we've had really consistent flakes, just all melt by the time they land. Our temp just went under 32. Hope to stay inside. :)

If you have a snow storm, is your lens still going to get delivered? we're all dying for Monday!

Spun off for our storm discussion and photos. Started snowing here around 2 PM, but still above freezing. They're calling for 8-14 in., and the weather liars are expecting it to drop in on CDS and Scottes before it's done, as a nor'easter.

I had almost forgotten what snow looked like in the D.C. area. Please indulge me as I become nostalgic.

I'm going outside in a minute before the sun goes down and taking a few shots. Still can see some grass, but it looks like a long night. Do you think the roads will be good to go? I doubt it. Virginia has 20 trucks I think. :)

Here are some this morning. Snowed about 8-9 inches overnight. It's spectacular. We even had lightening early this morning.:D

Peter, in upstate NY we did have our cars in the garage. But in VA, it doesn't snow that much. Most people in our area have 3-4 cars and some have to stay out. We have lots of stuff in our garage, so we park on the driveway. Usually, it's not a problem. Today, it was, in a big way. But my husband and boys went out and dug us out. Now if only we can get to the mailbox because the mail-lady ain't gonna be too happy with us if we don't clean that thing off. ;)

Step 1 of the snow drill - break out the snowshoes and trample the back yard to make it small dog safe.
Step 2 of the snow drill - get a photo of the front before starting to shovel out to get the paper.
Photo for Step 1 deliberately underexposed to allow detail of snow surface to come through. I know how to make it white.

There was snow clinging to all the trees down in Rock Creek Park when the cameras, the skis and I went down. Unfortunately, as soon as the cameras came out of the Slinger Pro, the trees upwind of me decided they wanted to share their abundant supplies of snow.

Great shots, Jon. Didn't realize the complexities of having a small dog in your yard. Can really see why you'd have to flatten the snow. My kids went out early to get onto their sleds and they didn't go anywhere. The snow was too deep. It was funny to watch them. It wasn't fluffy snow, either, the thick stuff. Here is one with the boys making their snow man. My son is 8 and the snowman is taller than he is. The snow was so easy to pack.

So how much snow did all you folks get, anyway? It's still falling in Boston. I haven't been out since it started blizzarding 2 hours ago, so I have no idea how much we have. I do know that I have to break out the snowblower shortly....

Compared to New England we had a flurry...;) In my neighborhood, northwest of D.C. we received 13 inches. First shot was taken at 10 p.m. last night before it cranked. The second is the proverbial calm AFTER the storm this afternoon following snowblower olympics.

I think we got around 9-10 inches here in Manassas, VA. The storm came mostly in the night. We woke up to a grey world, as you saw my post above. Then the sun came out around 10 and it's been beautiful and school is closed tomorrow. It should all melt by the end of the week. It gets way too warm around here to enjoy it for long. :(

Well, the snow on our mailbox (above) isn't too far off from the final total. It was a wettish one here. Not too bad to shovel, except where the plow had been.

It finished snowing here around 4:30. I'd say that we got 14", maybe 16". There was a lot of wind so a lot of drifting. Light as heck - it barely counted as snowblowing and I went full-speed except for the mound at the end of the driveway.

Yeah, I counted 15 on my feeders this morning before the harsh part of the storm hit. I probably had 10 constant almost all morning.

We've seen something like 40 or so including on the ground and in the locust the feeder's hangkng on. To say nothing of the azalea and wild roses behind the locust. This is what it looks like every day!

Geez, I missed this one. I'm in Traverse City, MI on some family business and I had to leave the wife and youngest home. They had to shovel out the house, and they said it was just over 12 inches.
Meanwhile, up here it has snowed a little each day, but they just take it in stride - they typically get 100+ inches per year. I didn't bring my camera this trip, but there are some nice views.
Have Fun,

Okay, I know sometimes family business means something really sad and serious, but Rick, come on! A holster bag and your Digital Rebel. I love seeing MI in the winter. It's actually quite lovely. That's okay. I've seen about 20 really great sunrises and sunsets this year already and didn't even have my P&S with me. Understand the convenience thing very well. Hope everything worked out with your trip and you give your wife a big hug for digging the cars out of the snow without you. ;)

You WHAT? Want to be drummed out of POTN? At least stuff a little P&S in a spare corner - you never know when that next Pulitzer Prize-winning photo op will arise.

I wanted to travel light this trip, and I did think about grabbing the 20D just before I walked out the door, but I decided not to. Ifreally needed a camera, my brother has a G5 (recommended by me), so I am not totally photographically challenged, but I knew this was going to be a busy trip so the camera stayed home.
Have Fun,
