View Full Version : Things change

It's another cold, grey, damp British Winter day. I haven't shot a thing for almost 5 weeks: it's just work, work, work these days, or the weather sucks, and I 'm itchin' to get out and wander the local mean streets.
I also want to test the new widey I got Friday off a fellow POTN-er, so despite the chill I dress warm, choose some upbeat 'walking' music and pop out for an hour with the Sigma 15-30mm EX IF and my funny little £7.50 Helios! It's actually so cold my eyes are watering. It's the chill wind. MF is hard enough without this and I don't have a replacement focus screen fitted yet either. These are the times you are glad of AF ... at least I know have the Sigma ;-)
Where I live it's all change. Old workshops and industrial building are being reconstructed as yuppie apartments and trendy business units, but much of it is still pretty well run down: an interesting time to be living here and there's always new stuff to see. I even got around to converting a few RAW's for a change ... as you can see I prefer the naturalistic look. I have a little recording project going on as I try and track some of the changes to the area!

The last building is where I live. It's made up of many old buildings with each reconstructed, knocked through and part knocked down and rebuilt new as required. The interior is modern and the exterior a mix that is still incomplete in one corner. It's an interesting idea that seems to work fairly well ... at least better than knocking everything down and rebuilding. Some of the feel of the area remains.

A splendid urban portrayal, imbued with not overly decadent sentiments, vigorous character and good taste. No glitz, photoshop excesses and prettiness here.......no juvenile "statements", cliches and simpleton juxtapositions either.
To my eye, this represents intelligent sincere photography at its best, distinctly 'CONDYK", and true to himself the photographer and a keen perceptor.

It's unfortunate this kind of thing is happening in urban centers all over the place. Character and history are being replaced by trendy, uniform and most of all ****ing boring so that the fashionable types can move in. Worst of all are the trust fund bohemians who bastardize the character of the neighbourhood by moving in a starbucks and a big chain grocery store where the old market used to be and then talk about how hip they are for living in a neighbourhood "with such character"
But aaaaanyway, the first two are definately it for me. The fourth one is interesting as hell subject wise just for reading the odd smattering of people occupying the area, but the photo itself doesn't do it for me. Third one is cool as well, just not as interesting as the first two

Excellent photo essay Condyk! I like the way the photos progress from old to new, with a few detailed shots thrown in for good measure.

  A man of clear good taste, an appreciative eye, and tongue firmly in ruddy cheek ;) These are shot with a documentary eye and so shown as value and fuss neutral as possible. One cannot avoid some juxtaposition tho: the wreck and the rebuilt; glamour now trodden in dirt. Hopefully, we avoid cliche ... just!

Agreed Maestro ... I could be pocketed within the coat of a 'fashionable type' too I suppose, but I hope I have a sensibility to duck and cover from its excesses and focus on simple things. I truly love a greasy cafe more than Starbucks, but there is plenty of space here at the moment to accept both ... in ten years time, who knows? I will be somewhere else.
The third shot I like, tho' the meaning is maybe a little overt and unfortunately the exposure is not right: it was dark and my first shot with the new Sigma. Oh well ;) The door shot is pure recording: a simple representation of old and new. At the top we have the abstract 'artist' moving into rooms vacated by the slowly diminishing original business that once occupied the whole place. I need some of your creativity and PP mastery.

Cheers BB, that was the idea and you are very kind ;)
nice composition.
Thanks for the comment big boy ;)

Inspiring set of pictures, condyk - the gradual change of our environment will often been regognized by these kind of documents.

... and it's not only urban phenomenon: See this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=124763) and this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=126425), taken almost in the middle of nowhere.

It's unfortunate. Alot of things with a pesonality are being replaced by the uniformness of corporate templates used all across the continent.
And there's nothing wrong with being a fashionable type, it's more the yuppy sprawl that comes with them sometimes that's the crux of the issue. No offence was intended, I have fashionable tendencies myself on occasion

Thanks for the kind words sir ...
I can't really see any 'property developer' moving to tart up those buildings Olli  but if it was only in the 'right area' then we'd have many herds of yuppy's mud wrestling each other in a bid to out-gazzump!

I am sure there is also a template for 'authentic personality'  It's used in many English Pub's these days;) and of course the many corporate templates can be seen infesting our tender developing countries too. The tide is too strong I fear!

You do it very well too fella ... at my advanced age I can only just manage an amalgum of the Gap urban casual template and a dribbling forgetfulness that means I sometimes forget my pants
