Great set of shots and a great gallery too, I was gutted that I couldn't be there yesterday, was really looking forward to see how last years winner Dorian Rees would perform in the Octavia WRC
Cheers

Thanks Ian.
Rees looked quick to this occasional rally watcher but then he was the first of the seeded cars and was a lot faster than what went before. Is 4th a good position or should the car have beaten the Fords ?

Cheers Dave. It was a bit parky hanging around during the hourlong delay but it warmed up after that. Plus it was a bonus to have the sun come out

I find it's always wise to stay on the Sports Mod's side by posting his favourite rally car ;):p

I was at this, was first Rally for few years, really enjoyed it, apart from the hold up on stage 2 mid 1300/1400's :(
Was anyone on the hairpin where all the cars kept gonig through the gate and totally missing the fact theres a right hand hairpin lol

Wow some amazing shots in your gallery!
I must have been opposite you on the corner as I recognize a lot of the shots... just wish some of mine had been as superb as yours :(
Just out of interest what gear and general setup were you using? if you don't mind me asking of course.

We were in SS3 waiting for the cars that got held up in Speech House. we had 20 1400s through then an hour delay:(....at least they did run all the stages as I worried they might cancel a stage or two.

Correct Brands, I was on a busy hairpin, fair few photograpehrs there, like you said, saw about 20 1400's then nothing for an hr, and it was far from comfortable after about 30 mins of standing around lol.
Was good when the big boys came though thought, that Yellow Escort WRC ploughed straight through the gate, I'll show you the pics, he was gonig WAY to fast past me, as the image will suggest...
Got hit by a few stones aswell, being in the position I was...

We were at the hairpin at post 3 in SS3 and around post 4/5 in SS6, a section not used in the first run through.
I was using a 20D with either a Sigma 100-300mm EX F4 or a 85mm 1.8. Most shots were either at 85mm or around the 150mm mark. I doubt I used the 300mm end for more than 10 shots all day. Set up was 1/250 or 1/320 using ISO settings from 200 to 1600:shock:
Thanks for your comments

Being obviously quite new to my Camera.. I was struggling with the light.. and I don't think my lens helped, been to plenty of Rally events, first time with a "Proper" Camera though.
Thanks for sharing... trying to be sponge like at the moment and take on board as many tips, tricks and as much advice possible.
Apologies in advance...as I say was struggling a bit..

Thanks for your comments danja :)
I do think a faster lens would have given me a little more help.
Would the 85mm f1.8 USM be a better suited lens for this sort of task?
I am saving desperately for a 70-200mm IS L.... well its not so much the saving as the justification to the better half  I know that would give much more versatility, but in the mean time I am looking for a small stop gap.
Cheers

My 85mm f1.8 meant I could continue shooting to the end of stage 6, even though it was very murky by then. It's also a good lenght for rallying ( well where we were at the Wyedean) and has fast focus . I got the 85mm for rallying but it's been very useful for other things this winter when I've been shooting in poor light conditions.

Very nice work. I particularily like the Mk1 shot at the end. Lovely low angle. I shall check out your gallery later.

I'd love to come down to the rally sometime and take a few photos, I passed though the Forest on Saturday on my way to Merthyr Tydfil and wondered what all the crowds were for until I saw a few rally cars on the road.

Thanks Steve and dod.
Tigerroar, in my limited experience of rallying, the Wyedean seems to be well run and has a very good entry list.

I couldn't believe it when you said they'd be 180 cars!
Nice shots Brands. It's surprising how different the pictures can look from just 100yds up the road.

180 started out but only 130 made it to the finish:shock:
I like the different angles and backgrounds that can be got just by moving 50-100 yards in the forests. I couldn't just stay in one place as I would become bored. With that new area plus one Ag found on the first stage I'll have more than enough choices next year;):)

How easy is it to find a good spot to take photos? Are all the best positions taken up by the pro's? I'm not sure I'd be up for the camera envy that might go on!
BTW, didn't anyone get any pics of airborne cars??

Good question. We had a little advice last year about one stage and therefore returned to it this time. However, it was purely because the rally was running so late we decided not to move stages but to try a bit further down the same stage and found another gem:D. As to pros, I saw one media bib all day which while we were walking between our two locations, so there's plenty of room ( Serridge stage is 8 miles long ).
Camera envy doesn't have to be an issue, in the end it's not what gear you have it's how you use it that counts ;)
