Huge storm hit NYC today and from as far south as Memphis to Maine. I'm sure we have plenty of members within that swath that took pictures of the snow and how it affected their neighborhood.

I went for a short stroll in the snow today. Here are three pics taken around on the lower east side/Chinatown. I look forward to others' contributions to this thread.

Here's another. One note about the photos I'll add is that I lowered the color temp to about 3900K to get the feel of the 10 degree or so windchill. I look forward to other member's posts!

I love snow! I guess I learned that from living in Minnesota all my life. Nothing better than a storm that closes everything down, just as long as you are at home to enjoy it and not stuck on the side of the road.

Don, does your girlfriend like the snow so much that she shovels the sidewalk without you telling her? ;) Must be a keeper!

I second that. Love the snow too. I think her shoveling the snowis a hint that
You've got to take her sledding, snowtubing or some place warm(like Bahamas or Cancun)
at least that's what my GF said while she was helping me dig out my car.

P.S. here are some of my pics:

Great pics ! I gotta laugh though I moved to Minnesota 4 years ago and the one thing my dad said was buy a BIG SUV when you get there YOU ARE SO CLOSE TOO CANADA !! LOL .. so I did !

And since then I think I put it in FULL 4x4 less then a dozen times .
The most snow I experienced here in 4 years was 6-8 inches LOL
Gotta love New York .. an ex - Long Islander and Park Slope often visitor of Brooklyn .

Here are a couple from upstate NY

I didn't even see the cardinal sitting in the one bush until i edited it.

taken from the backdoor handheld (didn't want to bring the tripod out in the snow.) But the "haze" around the moon was so eerie!

My dad has some fun trying to back this car out. It just sat there with a load of wheelspin. That's rear wheel drive with no traction control for ya!

This was as it was starting, not nearly as heavy as it became later on. It was also taken in NJ where it wasn't nearly as heavy as it was at home further in upstate NY.

This shot was taken before the storm came in full blast. It was more rain in the beginning than snow which is why you see water drops here.

Chris, those images are the best exposures I've seen from you. I especially like the branch and the window shots. Nice job dude.

edit: Maureen told me to tell you that she likes the leaf picture.

Calzinger

Thanks James. I'm getting the hang of this lens a bit more.

It's funny how my better exposures come out in conditions where such things are very difficult. The RAW shots had very underexposed subjects because of the vast amounts of snow which were essentially "bright". Thanks to RAW, I only had to bump up the exposure by 1/2 a stop or so to save the shot.

The branch picture is my favorite of them all just because of the tint to it. It just has flavor or something, can't figure out the right word. As for the window shot, I took that from inside my car. I took it from the passenger seat across the side so I had to really lean back to hit the minimum focus distance (1.2m on the 70-200 f/4L). I hate to admit it, but that shot is incredibly fake compared to the original. There was a junkload of oversaturation and sharpening that went into that shot.

I should've gone a bit wider that day so you could really see all of the snow (of course I'll bet you saw enough of it in manhattan James), but I wanted more macro-snow that day. I probably should've shot both, but my hands were frozen! Do you have any suggestions for shooting longer on a day like that?

How did you manage those shots in the snow? That's some serious craziness! I wonder what it would have been like if that POTN meet went through.

Tell Maureen I said thanks. I think it's the better of my leaf pictures so far.

Chris, it looks like you're mastering the new lens quite well. Splendid shots! I like the branch shot as well.

To all those who wish they can be in NYC during a snowstorm, well, it is rather pretty in the city during one. It is difficult to get around though as one has to slog through 2 feet of snow, dig out their cars, and slip and slide on the roads. Kids love it though and impromptu snowball battles erupt on the sidewalks. And for a fleeting moment NYC is pristine, with all the trash veneered by a blanket of snow.

It's a different story though when it all melts. Everything turns into a brown slush. Yuck.

Luckily it got warm last night and melted almost everything that was on the sidewalks. The sludge is like an extended hangover from the snow party.
