needing some help with night shots. What settings work best for night shots? what shutter speed, aperature and iso setting is best?

I went to a xmas lights parade tonight and all the pics turned out very poor.

There is some info in a post that might be helpful for you as it was for myself. Look for the previous post called:

One of the most important things about taking night/low light photos with the G2 is to avoid camera shake. I have recently purchased a Mono-pod, because of the posts in this forum, and this has improved my success a lot.

The camera will do a good job of metering for a start. Then I take note of the settings, switch to M, and adjust to the fastest speed with good results. It is better to underexpose as long as you avoid camera shake.

Keep these two things in mind and do a lot of expermenting with different settings, take a huge amount of shots. ( get some extra flash cards, if you don't already have them ) Have a lot of FUN. :)

What I found with my G1 is that is you take a longer exposure at a higher F-stop, you'll get 6-point stars around the lights. This also seems to get rid of CA around point light sources. You will absolutely need a tripod, and you should really experiement like crazy. Lots and lots and lots of shots. Good Luck!

You can set your camera on a tripod, and M mode. Change the speed, and aperture until the exposure looks
right to you. If you have a subject nearby that you want to include in your picture, try the night scene mode on the camera. It works very well (I used it recently.)
