These pastel-coloured skies are fairly common along
the coast here on clear winter evenings.
The full moon had me reaching for the camera.

This is a wonderful photograph of a beautiful scene, Hal. I like the composition very much. You have kept the elements of this simple, without any foreground distraction and have made a tremendous image of light, form and colour.
Thank you for posting this. On the technical end of things, this is very sharp for handheld, braced or otherwise, at 1/10th sec. Very well done. ;)
Kindest Regards,
peter

Beautifull photo!
Did you sharpen the moon itself,. or is the brightness of it normal? My only concern is that the Moon looks "odd" for some reason ?
Great image. I love the tall narrow crop.

Dear Peter and CDS
Thank you both for your comments on this pic.
You are both very kind.
CDS. A few comments on the moon.
We were sitting in the car facing the ocean and drinking
a glass of wine to celebrate my birthday, and admiring
the pastel colored sky and full moon rising.
Between sips of wine and saying that the sky looked
almost as much like a graduated water-color wash as pastel,
I didn't at first think of taking snaps.
When it was almost too late I decided to have try at pics.
My first exposure was measured off the sky. It looked good
but a little light and the moon was VERY bright and showed no detail at all. There was even a small halo of glare around it.
I therefore took a second shot at 2 stops less exposure, and this is it. First was 1/2 sec approx @ F2.8
I felt with this view that the moon was
a little dull compared to how it really looked.
You could actually read a book by the bright moonlight
and in the clear smokeless Australian air ! Hello Rel :)
In zones, it shows here at between zones 5 and 6.
In reality it was more like zone 8 or 9.
But then it showed in the image as a bright featureless hole in the sky.
What might make the moon look different is that this was
taken in the Southern Hemisphere. In the North
you see the moon not like this but inverted.
Thank you both again
Kind regards

Hello Rel,
How nice to see your name here again.
This shot was taken last Sunday at Shellharbour.
Not that far from Port Kembla.
One can actually see the tall chimney from there.
Yet the air really was pristine as it always is.
Thank you very very much for the compliment and for your birthday wishes.
I keep looking for more of your fine images and knowledgeable posts.
When do we get our next treat ?
With love

Happy birthday Eland :)
Very nice photo. A very difficult shot at 1/10 sec. I've done a couple handhelds at that speed myself with a bright frontal light.
You say no post processing. Why not? It could stand for some noise reduction that would clear up the sky considerably and likely soften up the moon some. I just couldn't live without Neatimage now that I have it. :)

Thank you Peter and Colin for your good wishes.
It was a superb evening, Peter.
Winters here are usually clear and mild.
And Colin, you know noise doesn't bother me.
At times I intentionally add it if the photo looks too smooth.
I like texture and usually I'm not trying to faithfully record reality.
Paintings are not smooth.
They have texture of the paper or canvas or board underneath.
The paints themselves are raised and have texture.
I like that.
I've never heard of Neat Image, Col
Does that smooth out noise or do other things too ?
Kindest regards to you both

Hal, I know I'm butting into your inquiry of Colin, sorry ;) Neat Image is indeed a noise reduction filter that works very well. The is a review of it here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/software/neatimage.shtml
I am using it less, thanks to you, but on certain images I believe it indispensable. I used it on 'Cloudy Moon' on the Share Photos forum which is only a night scene but one that I felt I wanted as sharp as possible.
Kind Regards,
peter

Hello Peter
Thank you for your message, just seen.
I'll try to buy neat image. So far I have not found a vendor who has it. Worst case is if I have to buy it from the US. I guess there are times, as you say, when one really wants a noise-free result.
I've just had a look at your cloudy moon picture.
It is excellent. Very very artistic.
Thanks again Peter

I know its cheating but I would have been tempted to shoot the moon at 1/100 f8 and then then do a composite onto the sky. Hard to do your way eland but well done, looks like a lovely night. And happy birthday too old chap.

Thank you Jamie, I thought afterwards that with the wide
brightness range, two images would have helped.
In truth I should have had the camera out much sooner
when the moon was lower, larger and less bright.
Too busy admiring the view and guzzling wine.
I don't recall seeing skies like this in Perth.... but then your sunsets
are inland.
Thank you for your kind comments and for your birthday wishes. They are much appreciated.

Bloody spectacular, Hal! And you didn't tell me you were drinking to celebrate your birthday, otherwise I'd have bought us a bottle the other day, over lunch. :)
Happy birthday, and consider this your birthday present (sandwich it into your other digital negative, and see if you get something like you saw that night).

...and when are you going to introduce me to the lovely lady (D..)?

Thanks Rudi
That's a fabulous moon shot.
More detail than one could capture with an ordinary camera lens.
Also "your" moon is well filtered.
On the evening I took the snap the moon was incredibly bright.
Thanks again
Rudi
