Can anyone please tell me ASAP if I'd be able to use the Canon 600mm f/4L IS USM lens with my Digital Rebel 300D? Ideally, I'd use the lens with a 20D but that's not possible right now. The filter size of the lens is 52mm and my Rebel is 58mm. I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!

You can use this lens on your rebel. The filter size doesn't matter as far as mounting the lens on the camera. The fact that it is an EF lens means it will work (as far as I know) with your 300D. The only thing is that you will have to get different filters for it then you use with the kit lens. Hope this helps,
Riley

Uhhhhh I dont think the filter on a 600mm f/4L is 52mm. And you will be able to use it on the XT.
Are we talking about the same 600 f/4 lens that sells for $7000?
edit: Yeah the rear filter is 52mm

Short answer -YES
Long answer - any EF lens will work with your 300D, 600/4 uses a rear-mounted 52mm filter, 300D doesn't have a filter size since it's a camera, not a lens, it sounds like you're kinda new to this whole photography thing (pardon me if I'm wrong) - isn't a $6,000.00 lens a bit much for someone who's not even sure if it will work with the camera they have? (not that I wouldn't kill to have one myself) - maybe you should start with a 400/5.6 or a tele-zoom b4 you take the big plunge - but, hey, who am I to tell you how to spend your money?

Yea I was thinking the same thing as you Jim. Maybe a 20D and the 400, I don't know they probably have a use for it so I can't judge before hearing what they have to say. I would never say no to have a 600 though :).

Thanks, Aussieskier and Lost for the replies so quickly.
Lost, Yes, this is an expensive lens and I'm assuming it costs a few thousand dollars but I have a friend who will part with his for much much less because he basically lost it in a poker game but I told him I'd throw some money his way to ease the pain, ha ha.
I know it's a lot heavier than my 70-200mm f/4L but he's throwing in the tripod mount as well. Eventually I'll get the 20D to complete the outfit. I'm pretty sure he told me the thread size is 52mm but I could be wrong. Even so, that's on the other end of the lens for filters, right? I hate to sound so moronic here but I've only recently started out with the good "L" series lenses.

The filters for super telephotos are rear drop in filters, they do not go on the front of the lens. The only thing that goes on the front of the lens is the hood. The tripod mount should be included as I don't believe it is removeable. Make sure you have a very sturdy tripod and a gimbal style head to hold it.

hey, lucky you - all I need is a friend with nice gear and a bad gambling habit - as someone else said make sure you have a good sturdy tripod - that lens is HEAVY!

'A few thousand' is part way there. Much more actually. Really, the 70-200 f/4 and 600mm are in different ballparks as far as size and weight. Have you actually seen it? And as others mentioned, you need a proper tripod and gimbal mount/head to use this lens unless you're built like a wrestler.
Best of luck to you though. It's a peach of lens.

FYI that lens retails for over $7000.00 and weighs 12 pounds. Yeah I'd say you need a tripod.

Photohio, what other lenses does your friend have? I'm sure there are people in this forum who would love a poker game with your friend ;-)

Chancellor, that was my thought exactly. But now that the 600 is off the market, what? Maybe he's got a 1Ds MarkII, or that sweet 180L macro. Heck, I'd even settle for a 400L f2.8 for half price. :) :) :)
Photohio, grab it for that "few thousand" and have a blast. Even if you find it's a bit too much lens for you, you can grow into it or sell it. You'd get a handsome profit, as little as you'll have into it. :)

Steve, don't look at gift-horse's teeth. Photohio, any Sigmas?

But chancellor, with the 180L macro I could get a REALLY good look at that gift horse's teeth. ;)

Bigma shmigma! Don't you know? I have L disease in the worst way. My doctor has assured me that for a cure I must buy one Canon L lens each month until I have them all. He did not, however, explain how I was to afford this. :o But then, I never considered poker playing before. How does someone bet the $7,000 cream of the crop in a poker hand? Sounds like I'm not the only one with a disease.

L disease can be cured. There is a therapist on this forum: Dante King, who can help you with that.
Gambling can be an expensive habbit. I bet (pun intended) this person wasn't betting the glass, but rather to pay off the debt was forced to relinquish it. People loose a lot more than a lens.

I have a great friend of mine that lost to his neighbors son, his car
Now I have to give him a ride all over....worst part about it was that he lost to a seventeen year old that had no remorse for my stupid friend! It was somewhat fair though, they both bet their own cars (both were pretty junky anyway  )
The best part was when my friend took the stereo out of it, the other guy was like “that’s all I wanted your ride for anyhow”
I just have enough for the 400/2.8 and when I get her there is no way I will ever part with it

I would have to win it in a bet or similar to you. My wife would never let me drop 7 large on a lens unless it would return 10 fold in business.
Seeing how I have yet to sell a photograph I dont think that will ever happen. But I do have my sights set on the 70-200 2.8 IS and a good ultra wide.

And you will be able to use it on the XT.
After extensive research (cause I am a nice guy) I have uncovered glitch in the EF mounting system that precludes the mounting of a XT body on a 600mm F/4 IS lens. It is regretable and you have my sincerest condolenses. To take some of the sting away I will be willing to make an offer on the lens. How about an even swap for the 100-400 which I personally gurantee will work on your XT. Hell I will even hand deliver it.

If his prescription is an L a month, then get your health insurance to pay!
