want to pick up a pretty cheap camera for my wife to use to take pics/movies of our son, can be 2nd hand/not a urrent model etc..pay up to 150 ish.

I have loads of compact flash cards from my 20D so i really want something that uses CF. I'm also big on canon (but can be other manufacturers) and a good quality movie mode is very important.

I used to have a sony p92 many moons ago which had a great movie mode.

I RAW mode would be good too so I can use for a 2nd backup for my company shooting.
any tips or reccomendations would be very much appreciated

thanks

It's not a current model but I recommend the Canon Powershot A75 (similiar models still in production - A95, A510, A520, A610, A620). It doesn't have RAW capture but has alot of creative modes (including full manual), a good movie mode, uses CF, is relatively compact, and takes great shots.

We've had this discussion before - Canon seem to have decided, as a matter of policy, to move to using SD cards in all their digital compacts. There hasn't been a new Canon digital compact for some time that uses CompactFlash, and the models that use CompactFlash are gradually being discontinued.

These days, memory is pretty cheap, and as digital compacts don't shoot RAW (again, it's been a while since Canon introduced a digital compact that shot RAW), you don't need a huge memory card. 1GB is huge in a typical digital compact. Our family Ixus 700 has a 512MB SD card in it, which is more than enough.

Mentioning the lack of RAW capability, Canon seem to have given up with the Powershot G and Powershot Pro cameras; there hasn't been a new model for some time. I presume with continual price drops in the DSLR market that there isn't much market for advanced compacts any more, and that the R&D costs can't be easily recovered.

I'm sold on buying the Canon G2 as a great used camera with quality build, excellent photos and a great combination of power and simplicity. It shoots RAW but also has umpteen automagical modes and uses CF cards, as you request.

I just bought a great G2 kit with all sorts of extras for $140 USD in Ebay, buying from a seller nearby so delivery was cheap and fast. It will run rings around many many MANY new cameras that cost hundreds more.

When I spent some time with the Imaging Resources Comparometer, http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM, it really gave me a good predictor of which cameras I should consider and which would leave me unhappy. (I have had some good digital cameras, I wanted something casual and cheap.) I compared candidate cameras to the outputs from my Nikon 995 and Nikon 8700. The G2 is a winner. I've seen it go out at $105 USD without some of the extras I bought. It's a steal at that price.

The S70 is a fine camera, same sensor and processor as G6, and uses CF cards (and has RAW). But it is now only available used.

Current cameras - the only one I know of is the Nikon 8400.
