20D with 3 L-Lenses owner..to G6 owner~

So would you say I took a step backwards? :D
I honestly don't think so.. I just needed something that I can use everyday and from reading your post about the G6 it looks like I'll be having lots of fun with this baby.

So tell me G owners...What should I expect from my new G6? :D

Obviously, you have a lot of experience shooting and a keen eye for quality. The G6 performs very admirably for a compact, and the lens is tack-sharp. You'll find it somewhat conservatively-rated in the ISO department, making it even more useful for available-light with its fast f/2~f/3 zoom.

Noise at ISO 400 isn't that bad and you can work with it.

It is easily capable of making superb 16x20's even from Large Superfine JPEG files.

Im afraid low noise at ISO 400 is NOT going to be your initial impression if you compare it to the 20D (that most likely exhibits less noise at ISO 3200 :wink: )

But you didn't take a step back ... you bought the G6 to complement your 20D.
If you sold your 20D and lenses, then it might feel be a bit different to you.

Well, you're certainly going to appreciate it in the weight department. Also, with the G you will have the possibility of better candids. People tend to react better to that generic looking p&s as opposed to a big black pro looking camera with a monster lens. Don't try and compare iso performance with your 20D, the 20D wins hands down, but the fast lens on the G helps compensate.

I would gladly rid you off all that weight the 20D and all it's lenses is, and give you my trustworthy G6 as a fair exchange.

If you get frustrated with the shutter lag (coming from the 20D, I think you might), think about setting one of your custom C1 or C2 settings to use hyperfocal. Lots of good info on this forum, but I like this:

Eliminating focusing will do wonders for the lag.

I too have a G6 and picked it up to compliment the 20D w/ 100-400L. I found that the G6 is better suited when I am in the Lab, using either the microscopes with an adapter, or when we are doing dissections. The 20D is my wildlife camera.

Besides, it's easy to throw the G6 in a pocket, a little harder to do with the "Big Camera".

I have an S70 (same sensor and processor as G6) as well as a 350D with array of lenses, so I can assure you the two are complementary. In fact the S70 is almost always with me, and I have had some fine 12x16 prints from it, and also some wonderful 36x12 stitched panoramas. The main difficulty is noise over ISO 100. Something like noiseware will help, but I find that over ISO 200 is unusable. The ability to use RAW, and the fact that it takes the same batteries and CF cards as my 350, are a bonus.
