That is pretty cool. I took a picture sort of like that. However I used my computer screen saver as the background too illuminate the glass making it look like a bar/rave scene.

Light painting can be really rewarding. Check out the work of John Hesketh to see some amazing work.
I assume most poeople here use digital, but film can better for this technique. Try taking multiple images without advancing the film and use different color lights.

You can take multiple exposures with Digital Camera's as well you know, well certain Fuji's any way; not so sure about Canons.

I start with the lights on and am near the switch, set focal point then turn the lights off go round the back and run a laser pen the the scene , the camera is set to about 7 seconds exposure ...
Thanks for the comments everyone ...

What a superb shot!
Which direction did you point the pen?

I pointed it towards the camera but not directly at it, and just spiraled it upwards ...

eljustino, Cool idea to work in a natural environment. Most of the stuff I have seen is carefully set up.

Light painting is something you do during the exposure. Essentially you use a light during a long exposure to add light to a scene. Often the technique is done with a bulb exposure in the dark, but not always.
Search google for some more examples, and that isn't a stupid question.

I'm sorry for what may be a stupid question but how is it not catching you in the photo as well? Shouldn't there be a blur from you being in the frame moving the light source?

Generally you set up a scene and then stand behind the camera with your light. To practice set up a still life and then use a flashlight in the dark to light the scene during a bulb exposure. You can even use different kinds and colors of lights on the same image.

Thanks, I think I get it. I saw another image where there was light swirling around a ligthbulb. I cannot get my head around how it can be wrapped around the bulb like that without being directly in the frame of the photo.

When painting with light I find it is best done in the dark. Wear dark clothing. Put your camera on bulb setting. Turn on your light source (flashlight,) The camera only records what light it will see. You can stand in front of your camera, move around, it won't see you unless the light is directed at you. You should meter so you know how long to have your light on any given spot. It is a lot of fun you should try it.:D
