If a tree falls in the woods and no-one is around to hear it, does it still fall?

Yes, but it doesn't make any noise...

If a tree falls in the woods and no-one is around to hear it, does it still fall?
Of course it flipping well does - what do you think the tree is - gravity defying? Did it just get back up of its own accord, look around, see no-one about, and snigger to itself? Honestly.
As to whether it makes a noise : if you a define a noise as a soundwave that is recognisable and audible to human hearing, then techincally no as no-one is around to hear it and describe the sound.
However, it's falling will still produce waveforms in the surrounding air.
My goodness I'm feeling profound today. :)

If a husband voices an opinion in the woods and his wife isn't around to hear him, is he still wrong?

The odds are now against this thread being deleted.
Your prediction will not become true and you will be discredited.
Your rumorist career is also doomed!!!
I on the other hand will get credits for this rumor 8)

The Credits thing was just an ugly rumour.

This thread is what it is, I neither make it nor undo it. It is woven into the rich tapestry of POTN, whether inextricably or not remains to be seen

Cool, 36 posts about a topic that became (amusingly) wrong 3 days ago. That's more than most of the photos in the glamor section ever get and they have boobs in them.
Maybe someone should start a "most pointless but entertaining thread ever" thread so people can link back to all the places they wasted time to no real gain. :)

Ahh if only we could do that with our lives, but then we'd should first discuss what constitutes 'real gain'!;) ;) ;)

Ahhh, Shi Fu, thank you for the lesson. A better answer would have been
"Who needs an umbrella? I'm singing a rainbow."
but my foolish brain wanted to include the deprecatory reference to 10cc, and in so doing I strayed from the path. Thank you for showing me the way :p
