Love paintball.

I'm surprised they are letting you shoot from inside the net.
As long as you have a mask on!

(Most national events you need press credentials)

Great shots, Ben! Knowing this lens, I can imagine how great it is to work with this sport -- high performance and crisp shots, until, that is, it's splattered beyond hope:)!
Awesome, awesome shots Ben! But don't you ever worry about the pellets hitting your front element?
Thank you. I use a UV filter, and it has been hit before. None of my equipment has been damaged (so far). I took several shots in the camera body during the last event, and even more to my body! :p

My 1DM3 is a bigamist. It lives much of the time with the 100-400 for the reach, but whenever closer shooting is possible, it'll move right in with the 70-200. I should spank it, but it's just so happy that way:)!

Here is one of mine. The crop is a 100% crop of a cropped final image is 8x10. This was shot with a 50D. This was hand held.

butterfly2937

And another again the final 8 x10 image was cropped and the 100% crop is from the 8x 10 image. This was hand held. :

The point of focus was the birds head the background is blurred by the lens. The toughest shot was the bird walking through the tall grass. I used center focus to keep the head sharp and to blur the background. What are you seeing other than than background that is blurred? Yes these were all shot in JPEG mode.

I thought the eyes/head looked a little blurry but that could have been the light or the way my laptop screen is angled. But yeah it's not as sharp as most of the pix I've seen on here. It might just be JPEG and/or not processed like Phamster said. I was just curious.

If you're shooting this lens wide open at f/2.8, it is well documented to be very slightly soft but will sharpen up considerable if you stop it down to f/4 or smaller. If you're shooting in daylight, this shouldn't be an issue at all and also not an issue if you're doing almost anything with this lens other then pixel peeping. In all other regards, this is a stellar lens, capable of incredible results, as evidenced here with 100's of great pictures in this thread alone.

Cheers!

I think soft images, have to do with poor PP. If you apply too much NR, it will just kill it. Also at f/2.8 you must know when to use it and when not. Anything over 30ft it will be sharp and under 6 feet you are pushing. it...:)

I know but I guess I like the challenge. Alll my shots are panning hand held and these were my first attempts at this. I thought the lens peformed well. I know I have allot to learn and shooting RAW rather than JPEG I am sure will make a differnce too.

Shooting RAW vs jpeg won't make as much of a difference in shooting BIF as will technique and patience! Yes, you have to get down photgraphic fundamentals, but also you have to work lovingly with your camera and lens to coax the best out of them!

It's a combination of a lot of little tweaks.
I've underexposed the background, desaturated the image as a whole, over exposed the middle of the image, pumped up my contrast and blacks, and have a bit of split toning in the image. That's the gist of it I'm sure there is a few things I'm missing. ;)

Practicing for the US Open of Surfing ? BTW why shoot landscape in Av mode ? Manual work wonders at the HB pier. Also using F32...that is like shooting f1...it would create soft images. Try f5.6-f11 and play with shutter.

Yeah July 18th, right? That is going to be sick... except for the fact that it'll be packed and Im' not sure how close to the pier they set up. Even if it is close to the pier, it's gotta be hard to get a good spot. Yesterday, there was a dude with the 400 2.8 shooting off of the pier with 2x converter i think. The thing was a GIANT. I never realized how big that lens really is.

ok, just pulled the trigger on this lens. I currently have the non-is and with all the rebates, cashback, discounts, etc...I couldn't help :)

Can't wait for it to arrive and see how it does compare to the non-is.

These are straight out of the camera jpegs. I would appreciate any comments on the crop regarding the sharpness. I have been told that this looks OK, and I have been told that its way soft.

Also, this was taken with an xsi.

I current have the f/4.0 IS but I had to go up to ISO 400 the other evening shooting at Brands Hatch.

Would you lot say the f/2.8 was worth the £400-£500 upgrade? Does it offer any better IQ or anything, or is it simply the wider aperture?

It's the one stop speed and the fact that a f/2.8 aperture activates a more accurate focusing sensor in the center focus point. IQ isn't a factor (except you get better IQ at f/2.8:)).

The lens is heavier, though.

I had tried creating an action to do this in PsCS2, but found that I wanted to change the font size all the time! How the typeface looked depended a great deal upon how I'd cropped and the actual pixel dimensions.

Sometimes 5pt font size was appropriate and at other times it would need to be much larger.

So I do things manually.

The last run of the Studebaker Chicken Hawk.

This is a 1951 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe driven by Ted Harbit. This car has a rich and impressive history. In 1962 it was entered it in the NHRA National Drags in stock class and won the class. In 11 years it won the class 8 times. Ted has continued to race the car since that time. On May 9th 2009, Ted was involved in a crash at the Muncie Dragway. As you can see, the Chicken Hawk suffered major damage. Ted was taken to a local hospital and is healing at home.

I believe the focus was on the nose, and at f/4 close up pretty much everything else, including the eyes, is outside the depth of field. I'd say that's what Sam is commenting on, thinking that the whole shot looks soft because of the TC.

I'd suggest trying the same shot a bit farther back, with a smaller aperture, focusing on the eyes, and you'll get the face and more of the animal in focus, and the picture as a whole will look sharper.

i am sorry it took so long to respond..

got a new computer and i had 3 wedding in 3 days.. crazy..

so my work flow is this..

very basic.

get a good exposure first.

i use DPP to covert raw to Jpeg

then any slight changes are done in Lightroom 2.3
then i put photos thru portraiture software if needed.. these were not.
