Just got this lens last week and the first chance I had to use it was saturday at the D1GP Miami event. Here's a few of my favorites, the full set is in my flickr.

Heavy crop on this one, and still a useable shot, love the sharpness of this lens:

[QUOTE=Coppatop85;8031025]WOW! That is an amazing shot! I love what you did with the frame there, I haven't seen that before.

How much of a crop is that? I only ask because it looks like you either cropped it, or were very close to the bird.

Thanks about 50% crop, the finch did come fairly close.
Your own shots a great, lovely colour and great pattern on the second one

Shot with 40D @ 70mm f/4 and ISO 100. Just got this lens yesterday, and I must say...I was expecting more from it. I didn't find it sooooo sharp, and it gave me some weird results of blurred images taken at 1/250 with IS turned on (yes, shot was focused). Maybe I should send it back...still need to do more tests.

BTW, I see you have a gripped 40D and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS...how worth it would you say it is to have the grip on the 40D in regards to balance with a heavier lens?

SamHunter
11th of June 2009 (Thu), 02:41
Two 580ex2's without modifiers pointed at each wheel from camera left and right. I'm about to get a third so that I can get rid of the dark area in the middle

SamHunter

The lack of modifiers would not work nearly as well on, say, a black car like mine. But that gray is perfect for every single photographic situation

This lens apparently is HEAVY.

Just curious:

How many of you routinely have this mounted on a tripod or a monopod? Asked another way, do you find it easy, relatively speaking, to hand-hold this beast?

Todd Lambert
12th of June 2009 (Fri), 20:47
Heck, I sometimes consider it my walk-around lens!

I don't find it that bad, really. If anything the most annoying aspect for me, is that it is so long, especially with hood. Weight wise, I don't think much about it.

At first it seemed huge and heavy. Now, it just seems huge. The more I use it though, the less unwieldy it seems.

I only mount on pod when trying to do a still life or landscape. Action is all hand held. Got accustomed to it rather quickly. When tired, or when wanting lower perspective, the knee pod works well.

I've had mine on a tripod once since owning it - this was indoors shooting in dim light where I needed a long exposure. Other than that, the F/2.8 aperture and IS are made for hand held shooting. The lens is heavy and big, but it's not burdensome, we're talking a few pounds.

tonylong

I'll use mine with a monopod when I'm doind a long shoot without much movement on my part aside from panning, but monopods can get in the way if the action requires much movement.

Yup, a zoo is one instance where a monopod works well with either the 70-200 or the 100-400, and I've found a combo of those two to be killer at the zoo.

Thanks! Taken the other day at LA Arboretum. My flickr 'more properties' says it was f/3.2, 1/1000, at 200mm, so I'd guess I was less than 2 metres, maybe between 6 to 10 ft. I think for this one I was cramped in between foliage to get the back lighting, and shooting through some other foliage. No bug bites though! And no filters or tubes, just the 70-200.

hi guys. very nice shots. i rented a 70-200 is lens for my 40D several months ago and loved it for the zoo. i have recently upgraded to a 5d mk II and was wondering how it performs as a walk around lens. note i'll have the 24-105 also.

just not sure whether to get something like the 17-40 or 70-200. I feel like i would enjoy the 70-200 more since i also take a lot of shots at golf courses where you need a little length.

thanks

Markitos
28th of June 2009 (Sun), 13:11
I would NOT recommend the 70-200 f/2.8 as a walkaround lens... not because of the focal length, but because of the weight and size--it's a big, conspicuous, heavy lens. It's great, but I wouldn't call it recreational.

I'd strongly consider the f/4 IS instead, or the 70-300 IS if you want something even smaller. If you have to have a fast L, then look at something like the 135L (which I frequently use as a walkaround lens) or the 100 f/2 or 200 f/2.8.

Todd Lambert
28th of June 2009 (Sun), 16:29
I dunno.. I use the 2.8 is as a walkaround all the time. I have the 24-105 too, but often I need as much reach as I can get.

It is a heavy lens, but if you're okay with the weight, there's no reason you can't use it all the time. I like the idea of going with a 135 especially and being able to couple that with a TC to replace the 70-200 - only problem, there would be no IS and that can be rough for some, especially at longer focal ranges and would be made even worse with a TC.

Going with an F4 version might be a better option, unless you need the 2.8, then you're stuck, so either get used to the weight or start working out! ;-)

johngpt
28th of June 2009 (Sun), 16:41
I suppose a lot might depend upon where you'd be walking.

Most places I don't mind the conspicuousness (conspicuosity? :) ) of the L lens. Sometimes it even helps with being seen as serious rather than a busybody. Gives a certain authority to your being where-ever and shooting.

I've become accustomed to its weight.

That being said, there are places where I wouldn't want it being conspicuous, making me a target for those with evil intent. My 70-300 IS USM fits neatly into my kit bag along with camera, 17-85 and 60mm macro, with all lens hoods.

But I do love the quality of image from the 70-200 f/2.8.

No doubt about that--that's why I have one... but having owned the f/4 IS and owning the 135.... I'd be hardpressed to nominate the f/2.8 as my first choice for a walkaround lens.

Great lighting! Can I ask what your setup was?

well i had no choice but to shoot this @ 2 PM - that was when the family needed my services - basically in the brightest part of the day.. if i had my choice i would have moved them to the barn, but it was full of clutter..

it was windy too.. worried my stand was going to fall over.. the battery held it down ok.

i made the best of it, and place the families in the shade and used my trusty alienbee with one beauty dish to light up this wonderful family reunion.

i used the 70 -200 , @ iso 200, 1/200, F9-11, bee was about 10 feet way.

First is at 135 and second at 200 both at f/2.8. I know that these lenses tend to be sharper at 135. I love the IQ at 135 but I'm a little bit disappointed at 200. This lens is amazing either way though!

Not even worth it IMO unless proofing to a customer. I used to watermark mine, but got fed up with because i think it just looks childish now. Seems like anyone can watermark their image and be a "photographer" now a days as long as it says "name photography". Just resize them for the web so no one can print them any bigger than a 4x6 or even less than that. I think it also takes away from the image in general.
