(I have posted this material elsewhere in the Forum, but I think it may be more useful here.)

Although there is clearly a learning curve with this lens, it is also apparent that it is softer (alas more blur) wide open than stopped down (not big surprise by the way, as most lenses are). I post below 100% crops from three shots taken at 200mm on a tripod (IS off) in the same order as posted below using a remote switch without changing focus in between.

#1: 1/60 f/4.0
http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/f|4.0.jpg

#2: 1/125 f/2.8
http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/f|2.8.jpg

#3: 1/30 f/5.6
http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/f|5.6.jpg

The lens performs great wide open but this is NOT the sweet spot of this lens. F/4.0 is sharper, and f/5.6 is sharper still.

This behavior has also been documented in the review by slrgear (http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/57/cat/11). So-called "blur index diagrams" at 200mm in these three focal lengths are reproduced below (taken from the slrgear website). You will see that also in this test, 5.6 appears to be the sweet spot of the lens (gets blurrier at f/8.0).

200mm f/2.8
http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/slrgear_2.8.jpg

200mm f/4.0
http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/slrgear_4.0.jpg

200mm f/5.6
http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/slrgear_5.6.jpg

The good news (at least for me) is that pictures taken with this lens at f/2.8 tolerate very well PP sharpening.

cfibanez
15th of July 2009 (Wed), 09:17
Let me add this comparison as well, also from the slrgear website (for whatever is worth).

The blurriness of the two 70-200s (2.8 and 4.0) are compared both at f/4.0. This is often a topic of discussion in the Forum. At 70mm, both lenses are identical:

http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/2.8@4.0_70mm.jpg

http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/4.0@4.0_70mm.jpg

At 200mm, the blur diagrams show pretty comparable sharpness, at least in the center, but the 2.8 seems a bit more blurry towards the edges. This was tested in a 20D, and it could be that corner differences are exacerbated on a FF sensor:

http://zephyr.cmb.ki.se/POTN/2.8@4.0_200mm.jpg

I know the watermark is ugly. I was advised by a friend to add the watermark. I've never added such a thing before but I wanted to protect my efforts.

IS is not designed to stop subject movement, only camera movement. You will still need enough SS to freeze the movement of your subject. It is an awesome lens though! :D

I hear ya, yes you are right, but get used to it anyway.
I had the same feeling the first time i got this lens, and it is still heavy and will be heavy always, but after i play with heavy things after such as 300 f2.8L IS handhold i feel this lens 70-200 is not heavy anymore, it is just a matter of time and used to, maybe time for your to go to gym or have it at home with 70-200 f2.8IS ;)

So how do you hold this lens when you are just walking around, I would normally have my camera hanging around my neck, but this lens is alot heavier than what I have ever used before and I was wondering if it is not good for the camera to have the lens hanging its full weight from the mount?

I shoulder carry my 50D+grip and my 70-200 f/2.8. I find it much more comfortable than hanging it around my shoulder. I also use a neoprene strap which makes a huge difference compared to the stock Canon straps.

It didn't take long to become accustomed to it. I often carry it around all day.

I generally have right arm and my head through the carry strap, so the strap is on my left shoulder, near my neck. Sometimes the camera is turned "wrong way" around so the barrel of the lens sits more flush against my side rather than jutting outward. Just depends on how long I'll be walking between shots. My kit bag is a waist pack, and if there isn't long between shots, I'll rest camera and lens on it. Like mum carrying her babe. :)

I think any comments about this lens being soft at f/2.8 and 200mm are exaggerated or even fabricated. Soft compared to what?

I do a lot of shooting with my 70-200 2.8 IS at f/2.8 and 200mm. It is certainly sharp enough for me.

EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS all shot wide open at 200mm........

99% of the sports taken by my 70-200 f2.8L IS are wide open [2.8] and it is great, so yes, how soft you are seeing, and how sharp do you want it to be, even that 70-200 f4IS is sharper wide open but for my sports i will never choose f4 over f2.8.

Every now and then someone will post asking whether the weight of this lens is prohibitive. All I can say is that it's on my camera most of the time. It's my main walk-about lens. Granted, I'm not in an urban environment, but I don't think I could do without it's wonderful smoothness, clarity, and vibrancy.

Agree about the weight being a non-issue. But as a walk-around, I think this is a bit long on my 40D. I gather you have this lens on a FF camera, or?

Nope. Also the 40D. I reside in suburban/bedroom-community Albuquerque, so my walk-abouts are generally through the neighborhoods. On these walks (off work for awhile due to surgery) I like the reach of the lens for getting subjects across the street, up a tree, in a yard. Seems to work out well.
