Those racing sail boat takes a crew of 18 people to operate, the race goes on for a few days non stop. So they need enough people to keep it going.

Here's my first time shooting sports with this lens and a Kenko 1.4x. BTW, I absolutely love this lens. I think I would always have it mounted if it didn't attract so many stares. Does anyone know if there is a company that sells a black cover for it (other than lenscoat)?

I wouldn't worry about it. Eventually you get used to it. You got your body and lens combo to get a photo and you are there to get the photo.
Don't worry about 'everyone else'.

Agreed. I loved the looks I'd get from people when I was using that lens. Turns anyone using it into a "pro" immediately.

I get too many questions and comments with this lens. I think its because there are fewer photographers around here and really no white lenses. It is one hell of a sweet lens though.
Tareq
16th of September 2009 (Wed), 20:11
Because of this lens and another white lenses and pro bodies, all or most non photographer people in my area called me a"Pro".
I am not sure about that, but aren't pros earning from photography? must be 50% and more? if less than 50%? I am now officially a photographer for our local area sports club since last year session, so i am waiting this year [maybe will start by October but i am away and will start to shoot sports by November], so not even a 'semi-pro'?
johngpt

I've become accustomed, not only to its mass, but also the looks and comments. The questions I get are nice intros, and will sometimes get me a photo opportunity. I'll ask if I could shoot them, then offer to send them the photo if they give me their email address. Then I back way up to get them in frame! :)

After having sold my non-IS version some time back, I recently got a nice deal on a used IS version. I just now decided to see if I got a good'un or a clunker. Went out and shot my primary lens test model, the hibiscus at the front door. The following images are a 50 percent crop from raw, then a 100 percent crop from that jpg. Canon 5DM2, ISO 100, 1/800s @ f5.6, -2.00 Ev (due to bright sun highlights). I applied USM to taste, since I always shoot neutral.

It's the lid to his pod (refill container). The other paintballs are what spilled out from flipping the pod upside down into the hopper (loader). Brings back some fond memories. I sure do miss playing. :(:(

I got to use one of these for the first time on Saturday. I am honestly not impressed with it vs. my manual focus glass in terms of color. I will say that where my manual glass fogged up in the rain, this tank kept right on trucking. Is it normal for it to give off such lack luster pop/color? I just felt like the pics were desaturated a touch or so..no brilliance at all.

I don't know Mike. My image above seems pretty saturated. It was shot as a jpeg, without using the programmable saturation enhancement. I find I sometimes have to desaturate an image just a bit if they're jpegs. My RAW files are usually adequately saturated. I'll sometimes enhance the saturation and decrease luminosity of blue skies in ACR, but other than that I don't need to mess about with them. This is with my 40D body.

Interesting. You know it may just be my color settings on my 1ds. I think that may be the case because I just pulled this:

This was shot from beyond the half, cropped to 6x4 dimension to give to the keeper's parents. I was happy that the focus was on their plane. The lens is awesome, but my operator error will at times have the lens focus beyond the subject I want. :)
I can get some darn good focusing on the autos in the parking fields!

A pro friend who uses this lens has told me about the the miscalibration that had existed when using this lens with his 40D. He had to send body and lens together in to be calibrated together.
He's all smiles when talking about using it with his 50D, as the 50D can do self adjustment.

Nothing spectacular. This guy just showed up the other night, hanging around on the lamp post in front of my house. It is a *huge* bird and we got worried that it might prey on one of our cats. To give you an idea of its size, that lamp is about the size of 2 motorcycle helmets. It eventually flew away - I think it got annoyed by the infrared beam coming from my 580EX2.

hey guys I was 100% set on the 2.8 IS version of this lens but then I saw the pic from digital.picture.com.
The 2.8 wide open doesn't actually look very good. To be honest it looks crappy for the $2k price tag.
here's the image at 70mm wide open:

Here's the 2.8 IS at 70mm f4.0:

here's the 4.0 IS at 70mm f4.0:

So if you cant shoot the 2.8IS wide open casue the quality is awful then whats the reason to go for the 2.8IS instead of the 4.0IS? can anyone confirm this?
thx in advance
EDIT:
I also think that the 4.0IS at f4.0 looks better than the 2.8IS. again can anyone confirm this or show me their photos wide open.
thx once again

Matermarek, it is well known the 70-200 f4 IS is sharper at F4 than the 2.8 IS is at 2.8. Unusable?, you might want to do some more research. There are many great wide open photos on this thread.
If you don't like the 2.8 you should get the f4 version. Make shure you are happy

I meant the f4.0, lol.
at least to my eye, the 4.0IS is sharper at f4.0 than 2.8IS also at f4.0. I would gladly pay the extra $$ for more light but if the wide open performance is not that good than I really dont see the point. the 4.0IS looks very good to me wide open. Again I m only judging this from the pictures done by digital.picture.com and I m sure its a trust worthy source.
EDIT:
Matermarek
lol, its MastaMarek, not Matermarek. :D MeterMarek (like a spot meter) sound better but still, its wayy off. lol
