hey guys I was 100% set on the 2.8 IS version of this lens but then I saw the pic from digital.picture.com.

The 2.8 wide open doesn't actually look very good. To be honest it looks crappy for the $2k price tag.

So if you cant shoot the 2.8IS wide open casue the quality is awful then whats the reason to go for the 2.8IS instead of the 4.0IS? can anyone confirm this?
thx in advance

EDIT:
I also think that the 4.0IS at f4.0 looks better than the 2.8IS. again can anyone confirm this or show me their photos wide open.
thx once again

If you don't need f/2.8 than don't get it. Here are two shots from yesterdays wedding, both at f/2.8. Processed and high passed sharpened but I don't post/give any images without being processed so these will have to do. :)

thx, scott. These look very good. I was expecting much worse, by judging of what I saw at digital.picture. Perhaps I don't need the f2.8 but I ll welcome it with pride. lol.

I can always step down to f4.0 if I dont like the results wide open but then again thats not the reason to spend the extra $900. There would be no problem at all if the 4.0IS looked as bad wide open as the 2.8IS does. But actually the 4.0IS at f4.0 looks ... well the same or even better than the 2.8IS. hmmmm .... weird.

You're welcome. The 70-200 f/4L IS is stated to be the sharpest of the 70-200's. If you don't need f/2.8 than there is no reason to get it. Heck I really don't need it because it's very seldom I shoot in low light but as you can see from the previous images I still use f/2.8 for subject separation. There were a couple time yesterday during the whole wedding (5 hours and mostly with the 70-200) that I shoot f/4 or f/5.6.

With the way the prices have gone up it may be better to get the f/4 IS if $ is an issue but if you can wait until the prices drop or buy used than the f/2.8 IS is nice to have in case you need the extra stop.

From what I've seen and the photos you've posted, the f/2.8 lens is quite sharp at f/4, compared to the f/4 lens, but the samples you've posted make it appear to lack some in contrast.

OK, if that's true, so then -- you can make up the contrast in pp quite nicesly, but you can't get f/2.8 from an f/4 lens. And also, having an f/2.8 lens opens up a more precise AF function.

Like always, it's a tradeoff -- lower price and lighter weight from the f/4, faster and more precise AF from the f/2.8.

See what was posted above, that I am about to confirm: It is WELL KNOWN that the f/4 IS is, in fact, sharper than the f/2.8 IS. The f/4 is a much newer design, and has better IS, to boot.

Having owned both, I can say that unless you want to pixel peep all day long, the f/2.8 is sharp enough, even wide open. If you don't NEED the extra stop of light and are worried about sharpness, go with the f/4 and be happy--it's cheaper, smaller, lighter, and sharper. But if you NEED that extra stop, you need it.

Better yet, if you want speed, critical sharpness AND light weight, get a 135L.

Hi Mastamarek...
I once thought of it the same way you did and was kinda regretful of the purchase. But after a few times using it, I began to learn that 2.8 is actually a benefit.
Benefits to 2.8
1. If shooting portrait or wedding, some people with unwanted details will not be shown too much. Thus it will attract your clients much more.
2. Possible to use in door whereas f/4 is impossible.
3. Can stop down to f/4 whereas f/4 version cannot be changed to 2.8 when you need it.
4. Creamier bokeh which isolates the subject better.

the picture below your quote was shot at 2.8 wide open. For portrait shots, it is the better lens compared to the other f/4 versions. Why? Because when shot wide open, you get the ceamier bokeh and also though it may look not as sharp when stopped down to f/4, but it is definitely a plus. Unless the person you were shooting at had excellent skin or sufficient make up, then the f/4 is fine to use. But seriously, this person had no make up and her skin is definitely not perfect. So the 2.8 does a lot for her. I find this as an advantage.

I was torn between a prime to a zoom for indoors weddings, but after I got the hang of this lens, I don't think I am changing. It is so versatile I tell you...

Shot at 2.8; 1/160; ISO 100; Hand Hold; with 40D. No sharpening is done to the picture. I don't know why people claim this lens to be soft at its widest aperture because this picture is pretty sharp.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v423/ngaykh0ngem/IMG_1480.jpg

any advice...?Hi. Footie shot hand held. I took my monopod but I found it more convenient to sit/crouch down and support the lens while shooting. Since its pretty heavy, I don't think I'd want to carry this around and use it standing for all that time!

IS is usually described as worth two extra stops or three extra stops. Now I think we should qualify it as a two pint or three pint IS. :)

Seattle, WA. He was here for 5 days for a feature film.

Please note that I did not take any photos featured in the above quoted article. I really wish they would've asked me for some of my stills, though. Oh well =P

Here's a link to my blog post about it - http://blog.simkinsphotography.com/?p=101

Yes, you definitely need a faster shutter speed though with the proper technique you can shoot this lens at 1/60.

the last one you shot appears to be 1/125.

typically the rule of thumb is 1 over the crop factor x focal length = minimum shutter speed.

for the 70-200 at 200 on FF you'd want to shoot at a minimum of 1/200.
for the 50D at 200mm you'd want to shoot at 1/320 minimum.

Up the ISO if you need to. It looks like you were shooting these at 400.

You could have gone up to 1600 and shot at 1/500 or even 800 and shot at 1/250 (for the second shot).

hope this helps.

Although, is it just me, or is there a mix of ambient sun light and strobe/artificial lighting? Would a gold reflector help solve that?

it was during sunset w/ a gold reflector to camera right, this was straight out of camera w/ no adj. the AWB on the 5D indoor or dim lighting are not the greatest, a bit yellowish and warm for the most but none the less the FF 5D did bring the best out of my lenses especially wide open

Personally, I find that your use of the gold reflector nicely complements her skin tone, and I like that the highlights on her right/our left cheek are a more daylight colour temperature. Nice mixture of the two.
