Love this... can you share your lighting setup for this?
The lighting setup is on the flickr page. Basically used bright field lighting technique which means you light the background then use the lack of light outside of the frame to create the dark edges.

Haha thanks. Her name is Chloe, she is about 3/4 Black lab, we were told by the breeder she was full, vet says otherwise. The vet think she is 1/4 Newfounland. She was about 10.5lbs when we took her to her first vet visit which was about a week ago.

i am planning to get this lens from a very long time let me tell you i am a newbie to DSLR, but i am confused between f/2.8 with IS and without IS i have to tell you that i am on budget. But if i am planning to use this lens with tripod or halndhold on little faster shutter speeds like 1/125 or above is it ok to get without IS lens? i would like to use this lens for sports and protraits at times and bird photography if they are in reach
The main reason why i only wanted to get f/2.8 and not f/4 IS is because of the bokeh i can get with 2.8, can someone please help me!!!

IS helps you to shoot even better in low light providing your subject is not moving so for portraits IS will help a lot.

I just got this lens and have been seeing some soft focusing at f2.8. Do most of you shoot smaller than f2.8 anyway? At f3.2 the focus is perfect from there all the way down, but f2.8 is a little iffy with mine, especially with portraits. Does anyone have some portraits shot wide open?

Newb, someone with more experience than myself might have a more cogent thought. As I look at your upper image, a part of it, below the part you chose to show at 100% crop, seems spot on. Could it be that the f/2.8 shaved the plane of focus so closely that the rest of the object you were shooting was a bit behind the point of focus? The bit I'm looking at that seems spot on, looks a bit closer to the camera than the rest of your batch of fuzzy stuff.
As you have a new 50D, you might google for how to micro-adjust your 70-200 with it. There is a lot of info out there about how some lens copies might back focus a bit or front focus a bit. The 50D, 7D, and 5DII can micro-adjust for it apparently. But again, someone with more experience could probably give you better info than I can.

Keeping the 70-200 "Classic" thread alive, woohoo!
Sunday I tried something that I've never done -- I actually used the Canon 2x TC with this lens! Previously I had only used it on the 300 f/2.8 lens, but I was shooting ducks and geese with my son and let him use my 100-400 with my 1.4x TC and I didn't want to totally suck for lack of focal lenth, so there you go.
Here are just a couple quick examples -- I haven't gone throught them all, just cut out a third of them (I was out of practice and no monopod/tripod) but I wanted to show how much detail you get out of a quick shoot with the combo. The goose is not so hot because a lot gets lost in the "whiteness" but the duck is a better example.

Otherwise, I love the moments right before or immediately after a kiss (as you've captured here)!

It saddens me that my first copy of this lens was sent back to B&H for being soft in my opinion, now my second copy is being sent to Canon for calibration because even they think the images wide open are soft.
Aside from my gripes, the images on here are fantastic so I know the lens doesn't lack overall potential. I'm just having some bad luck for some reason.

More images from this performance HERE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=849342)
All images are of the same person. This was an Arangetram, her first solo performance given after several years of training. There were 5 different items with costume changes, live musicians, totaling about 2 hours of dancing.
5D & 5DmkII were used mostly at ISO 1600 with default settings in Lightroom, no noise reduction.

MFD = Manual Focal Distance? That was a guess. I was close to 7 or 8 feet away from the leaf. There is a clear line of focus there which should contain a little more detail in my opinion. Anyway, it's off to Canon to get recalibrated (Shipping paid by Canon because they rock). I just hope this all gets straightened out soon.

MFD = Minimum focus distance... if you are closer than the MFD, your lens can't focus on anything. If it is only slightly under MFD, your photos may appear only unsharp, rather than OOF.
