Beautiful picture Chris... It's definately a ceremony of some sort... Kinda reminds me of a scene in the Karate Kid II movie when Miyaga went home to Okinawa (sp?) and they had a funeral ceremony for his dad... Geez I feel old now... That movie came out in the summer of '86, I think...

- airbutchie

PS. Great shot too, ekk... Gotta love the fact that you can hand-hold the 7-2 2.8L IS and get a great shot under less-than-stellar lighting...

robz,

Yes, panning. With this particular shot, I used Tv mode, CF 4-3, center focus point, and Ai servo. I can't remember if I used IS mode 2 or if it was off. I usually have IS off when shooting sports.

Thanks for the compliment, but don't blame the lens. The lens was being handheld with a 2X extender at maximum zoom and the image is a 100% crop on a very overcast day. I was using a high ISO setting also. Show everybody what you can do under the same conditions.

OK, after these reasons we can't blame you but still we need you to post the original uncropped shot.

Sorry Bill but any shot that looks this glum would end up in the recycle bin let alone posting it on a forum..;)

I am sure you have better shots to show what this great lens can produce..:)

Calm down Bill.. the original poster of this thread called it
Post your best 70-200 2.8L pics
You post a clearly inferior shot, and start moaning and throwing down silly challenges that are impossible to replicate

so are you telling us this is your best shot with the Lens - nowhere in any part of this thread did I see anyone one asking to see High ISO shots taken with a 2x converter fully extended

Please look at every single picture posted in the entire thread and you wont find a single picture shot with what is clearly a professional Lens as bad as the one you have posted

I look at picture on its merits as a Photograph not really interested in what Camera or Lens, or how it was taken, try send it to a commercial agency to sell, and they wont give 2 hoots what took the shot

the basic facts are that you posted a poor picture on a public forum and dont like it when people point out its poor

post good pictures and get the praise they deserve, but please dont get upset at what in my opinion are fair comments

Regards Chris

Well, we all [or maybe some] have those poor pics, but we always try to show our best when possible, sometimes people here try to use the gear at extreme conditions and high settings just to see if that working ok or not and show samples to see if it performs fine in those conditions with high settings and no tripod, i don't know for what purpose? i did that alot and found that i just talking to myself and wasting time, but i don't blame him as i do the same as well.

Chris,

I don't think that any image post here is required to meet any particular individual's standard for worthiness of being shown. At least, I have not found anything to that effect in the rules. Like I said previsously, I had the lens for only two days, so up until then, it was the best of the few that I had. The fact that we have been deluged with heavy rains and overcast skies for months has not helped the lighting situation.

If you don't think a picture that I post is very good, then that is fine. However, I don't think that you have any business tell me what I ought not to post. Isn't one of the purposes of these forums for sharing and learning. The sad thing is that there are a few individuals who seem to take on the responsibility of telling others that they have no business posting pictures that do not meet their self-proclaimed standards. Are your comments being helpful or just hate filled? It seems that it is you are the one who ought to lighten up and grow up.

BTW, I am not looking for praise on any image that I post. Constructive criticism is always welcome. I did not interpret any of your remarks as being constructive.

Tareq
26th of July 2007 (Thu), 04:13
Calm down people, i agree with both of you.
I know that it is your best shot for now, Bill, but he claimed that you should do better, and can't you wait a little bit to get better shot than shooting now and post after 10 minutes of shooting while it is your first try? i have plenty of shots taken from each lens i owned and i don't show the first try always, many here posted nice good shots of thier lenses but these are not thier first shots, maybe after 200 or 500 they end with one best shot then they post it here or everywhere.
I think he was refering to that you shouldn't post this shot here, post it anywhere in this forum for critiques for example, but here you should at least try to shoot even indoors that good quality shot and post it here, we don't ask people to shoot with high ISO and extenders to get lower IQ comparing to others then we agree it is best shot, just i have thousands of shots from my 70-200 and i choose the best, and if i don't have any good shot then i don't post here, i can create a new thread and post it there and see what people can say and then we can learn, hre people show the best and not show to get critiques of the shots, don't get me or him wrong but i can post many shots from my 70-200 here and not all are good so then i don't do well to post them here while others post good quality if they've got if not then they don't post it.
We all here to learn for sure and share but i was posting in wrong threads and found that i shouldn't do that, check all those lenses archives and you will see that i didn't post there much as i know i can't have best shots always and i sometimes i shouldn't post as my post even it is high quality but not interesting to post, just don't get offended, we are all friends and try to help each other and i am sure that Chris never meaning to offend you or hurt you, he encouraging or tempting you to do your best then you are welcome to fill this thread with your amazing shots.

Be cool ;)

Bill
posting pictures on public forums is always going to invite opinions on the merits of the picture both good and bad

I think the hardest part is, people accepting the comments

I learned along time ago to take a step back when my pics get bad comments (often) and actually take on board what the poster has said
not throwing down a silly challenge saying lets see 'what you can do then'

taking that step back made me realise that the comments had merit, and it has definatly improved my photography.

my comment to your post in this thread were perfectly fair in my opinion
the thread is called
'Post your best 70-200mm Is2.8 shots'
and quite frankly that shot is a poor one regardless of all the efforts and low light
I take on board that you only had the lens 2 days when you posted the shot..

I wish you all the best Bill
and lots of happy shooting with what is a really superb Lens

must also add that this thread has some fantastic examples of this Lenses capabilities
regards Chris

Depends on your shooting, are you into sports and actions or into general around and portraits? for the first this 70-200 is the best choice, for general purpose or walking around and portraits and say some wide on FF bodies then 24-70 no doubt.
In fact both lenses compliment each other, if you get one then definitely you will get the other sooner or later.

These are from ALCS game 7. The ISO was 1000-1600 with no noise clean up. Taken with a 40d. Not the cleanest shots but I think it shows what this lens can do "in the real world". The Police one was an underexposed RAW fixed in PP.

Posted this in another thread but wanted to show why the IS is so advantageous at this focal length.

I've considered switching from the non-IS to the IS version for a long time.
However, I keep hearing that the IS version is significantly inferior optically to the non-IS.
Would anybody here that has owned both like to chime in? Maybe show a few 100% crops wide open?

Good point David ;)
However, I was still looking for opinions from those that have used both, and maybe some 100% crop examples from the IS wide open. I just read a review that shows the IS is quite disappointing wide open, especially at 200mm.

I mainly shoot bodybuilding/fitness shows indoors with lighting that affords me 1/320s at ISO1600, F2.8. This isn't bad, but if I could get down to ISO800 at 1/125s, that would allow for cleaner images. The 1DMk2N is still quite good at ISO1600 IF you nail the exposure. But any miss on exposure (which is common since the lighting isn't even across the stage) will cause in compensation and lots of noise. Of course, for the fitness routines, I would still need at least 1/320s, but I suspect the IS would still come in handy, no?

It was a blast shooting with my new outfit of a 40D and 70-200 f/2.8L. I brought a monopod, but kids kept running into me, so these were shot hand held.

1. Good&Fast focus even in low light

4. This is too small to tell and probably not a good example but detail you get @ f10 or above is crazy corner to corner.

3) you and partner engage in sexual activity, accompanied by lens

Sure man, sounds like a plan. BTW, not sure if you could tell, but these shots were taken at Allen Pond  There are more of the first two photos (http://armindefiesta.blogspot.com/2007/11/autumn-color.html) and last two photos (http://armindefiesta.blogspot.com/2007/11/brooke-jennifers-photo-session.html) in my blog.
