It was right across the river from Tempe Performing Arts Center.

Ah Gotcha! Didn't know you could get such an upstream angle from the north shore.

I need to go check that out! Nice Imagery!!

With a monopod, you are not advised to turn off IS. I use a monopod a lot with the 100-400 and a 1.4x TC with IS on and I'm glad of it!

Well, I'm pretty ticked off! A POTN "friend" (note the quotes) here in the area who has borrowed my lens for meetup photos has just announced that he has gone and gotten the Mk II -- the nerve of him!

And he's all talking about the 4-stop IS and stuff -- I'll have to get back at him in our next meetup in a couple weeks and insist that we swap lenses for the day -- that'll learn him!

straight from camera (full size on flickr if you chase it). no flash, indoor daylight only, from about 60 feet. the parents of the baby in question loved these photos and i was far enough away and with no flash so there was almost no disruption to the service (vicar looked into the camera a couple of times but that was it).

Hopefully some people in here can help... I'm tossing up between this lens and the 135L -- I shoot primarily Weddings and the like. I've got primes all the way up to 85mm -- I just need something a TINY bit longer, like the 135L. Or I could go all out and get this lens, as 200mm would be nice sometimes too, I'm sure.

I've heard this lens doesn't perform well under 1/250th, though - As you get some bad motion blur. And I of course shoot in Churches from time to time with dabbled light, so this could be a problem. The people I have asked do admit it is their unsteady hands and not the lens itself.

Just curious.. Is this pretty much the same across the board? Is this lens sometimes a bit useless indoors with bad light? Any help would be great!

Hand shake blur is exaggerated by a long focal length--IS can help this to some degree, but you'll always need a faster shutter speed to stop subject motion blur. I wouldn't say that this lens is any better or worse in that department than the 135L, though the 135L doesn't have IS, so that may matter to you. I really like them both, FWIW--the 135L is spectacular, and with a 1.4TC can become a ~190mm f/2.8. I use the 135 more often because it is smaller, sharper, and faster, but I use this lens on most paid shoots because of its overall goodness and the flexibility of the zoom. If I was forced to sell one, though, it'd be the 70-200, for sure.

Try to put together that statement above:)! These people are saying they got blurred images not because of the lens but because they weren't properly handling it. With IS and good technique, and with f/2.8 when needed, you can handle shutter speeds slower thant 1/250 for sure, I've used a lot slower, but still you want a speed that will keep up with the people in motion.

Having a fast prime is certainly a good thing to have in low-light situations, but still this lens is one that is repeatedly mentioned as a workhorse. Maybe check the wedding subforum and find out how it's being put to use!

They admitted that it was because it wasn't on a tri-pod or mono-pod, that they got shake. Not because they were "handling" it wrong or for any other reason, but simply because you needed something faster, because of the focal length. They simply said that Anything lower than 1/250th = Motion blur. Pretty simple to comprehend.

And not sure if you've noticed or not -- But this lens doesn't have IS -- Only the Mark II does. And I am not interested in buying the Mark II. I'm interested in either buying this (MKI) or the 135L.

Anyway. I know this lens is great outdoors and have used it myself on more than one occasion, but never indoors. Which is the only thing I am really interested in - Churches.

And again, I know the 70-200 is referred to as a workhorse and most Wedding Photographers sport them - That doesn't mean a lot though, at the end of the day. They could be using higher ISO (Which I don't want to do) or have extreme OCF setups (Another thing I don't want to do)

I'm just interested in knowing if anyone else here has had trouble with this lens while shooting under 1/200th indoors. And if that is the case, I wont bother buying it. I'll go straight for the 135 -- Which will obviously be better indoors, being faster and a shorter focal length.

Phew! Didn't realize I had to break it down.

Thank-you. Exactly what I wanted to know. :D

You are missing something in your breakdown here -- you can do better than 1/250 with this lens because it does have a capable IS. Learning how to use a lens with a longer focal length is a skill, whether it has IS or not, but don't argue yourself into a hole with possible misinformation:)!

My mistake, I thought this was the Non-IS thread. Never the less, I personally never said that you, myself or anyone else couldn't do better than 1/250th. You're mis-reading the entire point of my enquiry to begin with. I was asking people on here if they have had the same experience as I had heard - That yes, 1/200th and below is blurry.

I have no idea if it is or not. I've never shot in these conditions. That is why I am asking OTHER peoples experiences. *Bangs head* -- Can I be any clearer?

i've been able to get clear shots at 1/30 during weddings with some consistency. you just have to time your shots right and make sure nobody is making any large, sweeping motions.

for stationary subjects, i can hand hold 1/15 with some consistency, 1/8 is really pushing it for me. don't underestimate the image stabilization in this lens. as long as you're doing your job and bracing your elbows against your torso, controlling your breathing, etc, it's quite effective.

i think those who say anything under 1/250 is blurry just don't know how to hold a lens properly. even with the image stabilization turned off, i'm confident i could shoot 1/125 without blurring the frame. just use proper technique and know your own personal limitations. i have a friend who shot an eight second exposure at 50mm just by bracing himself against a streetlight pole. my own limit even when braced against an object is probably only around one second. we're all different.. just know what they are and work within your own borders.

This isn't a "long range" sports lens -- it's a "medium range" sports lens. For longer ranges you need longer lenses! But in-range it's a go-to workhorse!

I haven't really gotten to shoot anything other than batteries yet (focus check) but I'm heading to the Zoo on Friday so I should get some good animal shots. If I didn't have to work tonight I'd be heading to the dog park to get some action shots of the fur kids :)
